View Full Version : Manningham leaving a done deal?

I've been reading a lot of stuff lately about who the Giants can replace Manningham with if he leaves. The consensus seems to be that Jernigan is the number one choice, but they could draft someone else too. All these articles seem to assume that Manningham is definitely leaving. Do you think the authors know something or is it just a case of these speculative articles being a lot more interesting than articles saying things like "Manningham will probably resign"?

That^^. Nothing is done until it's done.

It appears so.....in articles posted in the "News" thread.....Reese has stated that MM wants to get paid and WILL get paid because of the catch in the SB. He's not getting paid by the Giants. We don't have it.....simple as that.

I think he will definately hit the FA market like Bradshaw did last year. Hopefully he isn't offered what he thinks he deserves and can come back.

The assumptions that he is leaving make a lot of sense because now is his time to cash in and make some serious money. Most guys get cut before their rookie contract runs out, so hitting free agency in this scenario is a blessing for a guy like Manningham.

He's going to get an opportunity to be a #1 or #2 WR for another team. More play time and more money.

Manningham emerged in his sophomore year, maybe we'll see the same from Jernigan next season.

I'm ok with MM leaving. He is simple. He cannot understand the offense, and was reduced to simple routes. He wasn't running the option, he was a straight landmark guy. JJ can replace that production with more flexibility. I love him for the SB catch, but let's be honest, he's made some bone headed plays and been a liability several times. Good for him, go get paid. You'll eat a roster spot and a bunch of $$ from a team we may face. I hope Jerrah buys him. Maybe Reid like him......give us back SS12, and we'll call it even...

I was with you up until this. Just... no. Nobody deserves an insult like that.

Also, SS12 burned bridges getting out of NY, he's not coming back. He's had multiple injuries, and Cruz is a zillion times better in the slot anyway.

Slow your roll dont forget what ss12 did for us he was clutch in 3rd downs and put up some nice numbers for a few years not taking anything away from Cruzzzz who if he keeps it up will be amazing but Smith was really good for us I would take him back in a second for around 2mil a year if he could pass a physical he would make our catch core unstoppable. By the looks of those teams interested in Manningham he is putting the dagger in his future, not a good qb on any of them, with the 49ers coming off a cinderella season can expect them to come crashing back to reality next year.

Doesn't sound like he has any desire to stay. I don't know how much these comments were taken in context, butsome it seems quite bitter for someone who just had the memorable play in the superbowl.</P>

the reason why mm and ss put up numbers was because eli was throwing them the ball.
i think with most other teams they are average barring injuries.

Tampa Bay

Sources tell CBS' Clark Judge there is "virtually no chance" free agent Mario Manningham re-signs with the Giants, and that he is "expected" to sign with the Bucs.
Profootballtalk.com reported on Friday Manningham was set to hit the open market, but this is the first we've heard of the Bucs as a potential destination. Manningham is said to prefer warm-weather cities, and would be reuniting with former Giants QBs coach Mike Sullivan in Tampa, who was recently named the Bucs' offensive coordinator. Tampa is also awash in cap space and in need of upgrading its receiver corps, so at least on paper, it's a very logical landing spot for Manningham.

Thanks bELIeve for the link. You're right, MM's comments at the source article don't sound quite as biting in greater context.

But this one is still troublesome for me:

"When the Patriots were mentioned as the last NFL team to
repeat (in 2004-05), Manningham said that franchise “is a different type of
breed right there, different type of coaching staff then what we [have].”

I get that he would want to schmooze any other team since it's uncertain where he may land, but this struck me as a diva-esque comment to even remotely suggest that there was any correlation between the Giants not repeating and the Giants coaching staff. Maybe he realized his faux pas as he seemed to try and back track and soften it in his later comments.

After TC's and Reese's comments at the Combine, along with the CAP challenges, I was resigned that MM was gone. I just hope he can do so gracefully.

I keep reading that MM expects to sign with Tampa bay. How could he know that yet without TB tampering? Isn't MM still under contract until March?

From that link I posted, MM isn't commenting on it so have you seen something where he is on record for that?

An interesting comment I heard in the banter on NFLN Combine coverage was that the Combine was the "unofficial" start of FA. So, I guess this is the 'nod, nod, wink, wink' phase with avoidance of any public comments and keeping plausible deniability intact.

But tampering probably plays a part in it. Nobody follows that rule behind closed doors, it's just a matter of proving it.
