"Of the slew of injuries the New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Giants endured over the course of the 2011
season, no position was hit harder than cornerback. The carnage began in
preseason with the losses of <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Terrell Thomas" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/terrell-thomas/" rel="tag nofollow">Terrell
Thomas</a> and Brian Witherspoon, both suffering torn ACLs.

Over the course of the regular season, corners such as MichaelCoe, Bruce
Johnson, Brian Williams and <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Justin Tryon" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/justin-tryon/" rel="tag nofollow">Justin
Tryon</a> also went down for the season, while rookie first round selection
Prince Amukamara did not see the field until week November 20th against the
Philadelphia Eagles.</p>

While both <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Terrell Thomas" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/terrell-thomas/" rel="tag nofollow">Terrell
Thomas</a> and <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Aaron Ross" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/aaron-ross/" rel="tag nofollow">Aaron
Ross</a> are free agents, both are at least in the team's plans moving forward.
Even if only one between the two can return, the presence of <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Corey Webster" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/corey-webster/" rel="tag nofollow">Corey
Webster</a> and Prince Amukamara will help to fill out the top three cornerback
slots at the outset of camp in 2012.</p>

That said, players like <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Justin Tryon" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/justin-tryon/" rel="tag nofollow">Justin
Tryon</a> and Michael Coe provide the team with options at the position.</p>

Tryon suffered a broken arm against the <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Miami Dolphins" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/miami-dolphins/" rel="tag nofollow">Miami
Dolphins</a> on October 30th, but had played impressively for the team since
coming in prior to the week four game against Seattle.</p>

Tryon was originally a 4th round selection of the Washington Redskins in 2008
and had played with Indianapolis in 2010. Indianapolis plays a very similar
defensive scheme to the Giants and the Giants clearly felt comfortablebringing
him in with that in mind. He started his first game with the team at the nickel
cornerback position, a testament to his familiaritywith the scheme. He also
showed a very tough side, playing the better part of the October 30th game
against Miami with a fractured forearm.</p>

Right now, he represents the front runner for the dime cornerback spot
heading into camp next season.</p>

<a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Micheal Coe" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/micheal-coe/" rel="tag nofollow">Micheal
Coe</a> also saw a lot of time at the nickel cornerback spot before suffering a
season ending shoulder injury. Coe had his best game of the season against the
New England Patriots blanketing Chad Ochocinco. Not much to go off of sure, but
anytime the quarterback is Tom Brady, players have to come prepared to cover
everyone. Coe was aggressive and comfortable in his role in limited action.</p>

Of course there is also Brian Witherspoon who had his eyes set on the nickel
cornerback role from the outset of the 2011 season. He was having an extremely
impressive preseason, sticking in the hip pocket of basically every receiver he
line up across from. He was the lead dog for the nickel spot last season and
should get a fair shake if his knee is fully recovered."

I'm not really sold on it's quality.

Tryon, T2, Witherspoon, Coe are coming off IR ended years. Ross has a long history of ailments. I can't trust any of these guys to either stay healthy, or be 100% next year just based off their injuries.

Webster- excellent
Amukamara- potentially great (I have very high hopes for this kid)

Webster and Amukamara are the only guys I don't worry about health wise (and even Amukamara missed significant time this year, but I'm not going to write him off as injury proned). I'm not sold on the idea that we have good depth at CB because, injuries aside, Coe, Witherspoon and even Tryon are unproven and nobodies really.

Unfortunately, I don't think we are in the clear with this position and I think we will have to address it in free agency or the draft or both.

Thing is the ones they mention, Coe and Tryon......are FA, we would have to re-sgn them. As well as make a choice between re-signing either T2 or Ross.

All free agents don't cost a fortune. What drives their price is how badly other teams want them. Not a big issue for those two I'm guessing

Between T2 and Ross, it is apparent that most of us like T2 most, but I would say Ross would be an adequate third corner, behind Prince and Webster. I believe that the team is in great shape, and I am sure that there are tons of you in agreement.

I would not be surprised to see the team not sign either of the free agents, and go get a more competitive CB to push Prince for the starting spot. That is, of course, in the case that T2 could not come back 100% from his injury.

I think that Role is a great fourth or fifth man to man defender, but it is obvious that Grant is closer to the end of his career.

It would be difficult to see how any high profile free agent DB would not consider playing with the Giants next season, because if you like championships, then a Giant is a great thing to be.

DBs on 3!
1, 2, 3!

There are some good guys back there. The freakish injury plague has created more doubt than actual ability, but it's a reality in the NFL.

If I were the Giants, I would still be looking to improve personnel in the secondary through the draft, especially in this passing league.

I have aspirations in seeing an elite secondary paired with an elite defensive line.
