GIANTS' POTENTIAL FREE AGENT TARGET: TE FRED DAVIS (http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/3/1/2835918/giants-potential-free-agent-te-fred-davis)

"Over the next two weeks or up to the March 13 start of the free agency
courting/signing period, we will bring you a potential good fit per day for the
New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants). The first
on our list is Redskins (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/washington-redskins)' tight
end Fred Davis (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34504/fred-davis).
Davis had a breakout season in 2011, with 59 catches for 796 yards and 3
touchdowns. He was a bright spot on a team that did not have many bright spots,
save for beating our eventual Super Bowl champion Giants twice.<div class="entry-body">

Tight end is a position that the Giants have filled nicely through the draft
over the past decade--with <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2252/jeremy-shockey">Jeremy
Shockey</a> giving way to Kevin Boss (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/16767/kevin-boss), and
then Boss giving way to Jake Ballard (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/108531/jake-ballard).
But while Ballard also had a breakout year, he was injury prone and gimpy during
the postseason. And when he and the suddenly-emerging Travis Beckum (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71291/travis-beckum)
went down with injuries in the Super Bowl, the Giants were left with the mostly
underused Bear Pascoe (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71444/bear-pascoe) for
most of the game.</p>

So unless the team drafts a tight end or two in April, Davis is a guy that is
worth a serious look. Of course, he has his drawbacks. For one, the Redskins
still may use the franchise tag on him. Secondly, Davis missed the last four
games of the 2011 season after violating the league's substance abuse policy; so
a second penalty would be devastating. Then, of course, there is the matter of
money. Would Davis be worth what the Giants could legitimately offer? Or would
they be better off spending money on an offensive lineman, linebacker, or
running back? Davis is still a very talented player who may be a year or two
away from really breaking out, but I'm not sure he'd be worth entering a bidding
war for either.</p>

Those and other questions will be pondered in the next twelve days. Ah, it
sure is nice to have a free agency period in March, with no talk of a
lockout."</p></div>

I've been saying this since the start of the offseason....this guy is an instant upgrade at that position and he'd come cheap. I'd love for us to bring him here.

Why in gods name would FRED DAVIS come cheap? Did you see his numbers last year - thats with a suspension too.

When I said cheap I meant cheaper than most of the guys that people want us to pick up in FA. I personally think he'd be cheaper than someone like Shiancoe.

Fred Davis would be an expensive route to go, especially when we like our TEs white, slow and good at blocking. He would be underutilized here. Rather take a shot at a TE in the draft. </P>

I love how it says Beckum was starting to come through. He was, but thats only because he was finally being thrown at and used. Beckum would be a stud TEon most teams IMO. Not our team. </P>

no thanks to Davis. He already got suspended 4 games for failing a drug test. Next time is what 8 games or a whole season? Nope, we don't need to take a chance on someone that can't play clean.

He kicked our tail game 1 last year. He is gonna get some looks because he has talent.

The fa tight ends discussed have been Shiacnoe ( a much older player with much less production) Bennet ( another young player but much less production) Carloson ( an oft injured player) Davis would be the most expensive of the bunch.

As far as FA's discussed - who is discussing them? Fans? Cause the giants are 7-9 mill over what will most likely be a flat cap - any discussion of high priced fa's like abraham is just silly.

Davis wont come cheap - but not on the level of abraham either. He has a had a history of off field issues but is definitely a talented TE who can haul in 50-70 balls a year. He was behind cooley for a while. But again it doesn't APPEAR that he will be in our budget - but no doubt contracts will be re-negotiated too.

Davis is a "potential free agent target" in the same way that Calvin Johnson is a potential trade target - i.e. he's an active player in the league. The story is pure fantasy on the writer's part and holds as much weight as the Colston thread on here.

Redskins have not used their franchise tag yet and it's definitely on their minds to make Fred Davis play for only $5.4 million for 2012.

Nope, I'd hold the fort inexpensively until Ballard can hopefully get back. And if he can't come back, then I address the TE position more seriously next year.

I wouldn't spend money on a FA of Davis's quality. Just going to cause more cap issues this year, and next, and the one after that.

I think the Redskins will either sign him or Franchise him.

Fred Davis is a very good TE, if we got him, everyone would be psyched, but I don't see us going after a High End FA at TE.

I'd love him here, I don't think the numbers work well though.

I think he would be a very nice addition to our team. I agree with you about not getting into a bidding war for him. We have so many of our own FA's to sign.

Davis is going to cost too much

this is a great year of value TEs, I can't see us spending the money on Davis
