NY GIANTS: TIME FOR RAMSES BARDEN TO STEP UP (http://network.yardbarker.com/nfl/article_external/new_york_giants_time_for_ramses_barden_to_step_up/10266196)

"In the 2009 NFL Draft, the New York Giants drafted a gifted; but raw WR out of
Cal Poly in the 3rdround. Standing 6’6 and weighing 227 pounds, the
Giants organization felt that they had found a diamond in the rough and a steal.
That player’s name is Ramses Barden who has yet to emerge as
the standout WR the Giants had projected. With the 100% certainty of
Mario Manningham opting out for free agency, the Giants are in
need of a competent replacement to compliment Hakeem Nicks and
Victor Cruz.

Many in the
organization are torn, as some feel that Barden may not be the
answer; while others still have high hopes. Thus far in his three year career
as a Giant, Barden has a total of 15
receptions for 174 yards. Last season, Barden
collected 9 receptions and 94 yards, a little
more than half of his career totals. These numbers do not suggest optimism,
however; I am one who believes that Barden can become that
3rdreceiver for Eli Manning and an equal threat that
Manningham was.

The main concerns regarding
Barden had been his inability to stay healthy throughout his
career and also his inconsistency in catching the ball. With the NFL draft a
little over a month away, the Giants will need to decide if Barden
is the answer or not. My guess is that the Giants will draft a WR
somewhere between the 4thand 7throunds; regardless of
their perception of Barden. With an open competition in mind
for that 3rdreceiver, the Giants are hoping that Barden
will emerge and take advantage of this opportunity and give the Giants
another potent weapon.<span style="DISPLAY: none"> </span>"

Deal with it

Fixed.

As much as it pains me to agree with the clownshoe though, I don't think Barden is going to materialize either.

Inconsistancy in routes, catching, lack of speed and injury history just doesn't give me a lot of hope that this guy is a gamer.

Thanks Roa.. I feel he's ready to step in. The question is can he stay healthy?

The receiver out of Cal Poly.... I just loved hearing that for some reason. When we drafted him all I could think of was how cool Cal Poly sounds lol..

I think Barden's ship has sailed. In a time when we need all the money we can find to keep players we need.....

I think Jernigan is going to make some big plays this year.

The guy is fast as hell.

But yeah I agree.

Not trying to be a jerk but if Barden makes anything happen, it's mostly because the coverage is going to be on Nicks and Cruz.. Though that might be the case with anyone coming in.

Yes, and some think herpes simplex sounds cool too [;)]

I don't think Barden is going to see much playing time and that will eventually end his time here.

Personally, I'd rather see Hixon on the field, followed by D Thomas and Jernigan

I don't know... Reese has a knack for WR's

Nicks
Cruz
Rio
Steve Smith

I'm not ready to give up on Barden when he's finally been healthy &amp; showed he has some upside. He can snag passes out of the air with his wingspan.

If he spends time with Eli this off season he could turn into a competent #3.

I just want Steve Smith back [:)]

Not sure how good Hixon is going to be after another ACL but I do hope the best for him. He's a good guy and never complains.

My thought is they think he's going to be healthy and a welcome addition to the return game. He was always an advantage at WR in 3 and 4 WR sets.

He saw very little action on offense, but when he did, he got open and made a couple of big possession receptions to keep the chains moving. Not to mention, I like his character!

I don't recall 'inconsitency in catching the ball" but I do recall the injuries and his inability to make an impact on special teams. I actually remember him catching everything that hit his hands. I'm not sure he is ready to blossom but there is no cost to giving him another training camp to show something.

I agree.

The 3rd WR on the Giants offense is every so important now that Nicks and Cruz will be drawing a lot of attention next season and the offense has become pass-heavy.

Barden did well when he got his chances. However, if Hixon is 100% and minus an amazing WR acquisition (FA, drafted, undrafted or trade), the 3rd WR spot is Hixon's to lose.

Interesting choice of analogy, considering a player who's named after a prophylactic is your subject :)

I'm pulling for him, but I don't have any faith left him. He's an injury waiting to happen.

I give him one more chance to step up and compete with JJ for the # 3.

Put me in the camp that thinks Barden will step up and be our #3. He simply needs the playing time. Let's see how his training camp and pre-season goes because that will be his chance to get lots of time on the field.

Competition will be Hixon coming off 2 ACL tears in a row and Jernigan who has done absolutely nothing in his first year and couldn't even return kicks or punts. Thomas (if he comes back) will be in that same category. Hopefully I'm right, but I do like what I've seen from him when actually on the field.

I also didn't think we would have had to wait over 3 years to see Gilbride call a fade to the end-zone for Barden.

I think he needs to step it up...I believe he is capable but just not sure if he believes it and that is really what matters.</P>

I definately believe we will get a WR in the draft in later rounds but to suggest (or rather...not mention) Devin Thomas is incapable of taking the #3 spot is hardly credible. I like his desire to play well...I think the Giants brass just want Barden's size in the endzone and on 3rd down more but he needs consistancy. If Thomas stole the spot I think he could produce similar numbers to Manningham. I am not interested in seeing D. Hixon as a WR because he is made of glass but like him at return man duties.</P>

I don't have much faith in Jernigan at this point in his career...he is still another year or two away from a breakout season...if it happens!</P>

Tons of talent here at WR. Plus we should expect new guys in camp too. Competition will be very high.
Barden needs to do more than just step up.
