MARTELLUS BENNETT FREE-AGENT SIGNING: COUGHLIN CALLS MOVE "PERFECT MATCH" (http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/3/14/2872171/martellus-bennett-free-agent-signing-coughlin-calls-move-perfect-match)

"New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants)
head coach Tom Coughlin today called the signing of free-agent tight end <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34521/martellus-bennett">Martellus
Bennett</a> a "perfect match." The Giants signed the four-year veteran to a
one-year, $2.5 million contract.<div class="entry-body">

"In our situation it's a perfect match, because here we are with two guys
that aren't going to be able to go," Coach Tom Coughlin said. "We get a guy with
this quality and we can say to him, ‘You go out on the field, you go from less
than 30 percent play time to 70-75-80 percent play time just by virtue of if you
come here and if you are willing to pay the price to be what you want to be.
Here's the opportunity.'"</p>
<p class="extend-divide"><a name="storyjump"></a>http://cdn1.sbnation.com/images/blog/star-divide.v5e9d7f1.jpg</p>

Bennett, 6-foot-6, 265 pounds, played his first four season with the Dallas Cowboys (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/dallas-cowboys) as
the backup to Jason Witten (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/3446/jason-witten).
The one-year deal is a sort of "prove it" contract for Bennett, who gets an
opportunity to be the Giants' primary tight end in 2012 with both Jake Ballard (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/108531/jake-ballard)
and Travis Beckum (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71291/travis-beckum)
rehabbing from torn ACLs suffered during the Super Bowl victory over the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-england-patriots">New England
Patriots</a>.</p>

"We had a very good, open, forthright visit with Martellus today, and we are
excited to have him join the Giants family," general manager Jerry Reese said.
"He's ready to go to work and wants to prove he can be one of the top tight ends
in the NFL; we think the sky is the limit for him here."</p>

Watching the Super Bowl, Bennett saw Ballard and Beckum go down and thought
he might end up in New York with the Giants.</p>

"I'm just happy to be able to come here and get a chance to be the starter
and work with a guy like Eli (Manning) and with guys around me like Victor Cruz (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/109584/victor-cruz)
and Hakeem Nicks (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71294/hakeem-nicks),"
Bennett said. "In Dallas it was the same thing with Dez (Bryant), but I think
it's different for me now because I get the chance to step up and really show
what I can do."</p>

The Giants seem intrigued by the untapped potential they see in Bennett, who
caught 85 passes in four seasons with the Cowboys. As a backup to Jason Witten
in Dallas, Bennett's first job was to block and he wa rarely a focal point in
the Dallas passing attack.</p>

"What you have is a talented athlete who played behind an all-pro," Coughlin
said. "Who is not very satisfied, is not very fulfilled, is anxious. He is
anxious to prove the quality of athlete and football player that he can be. If
you go back to '08, '09, '10, '11, you can see spots where he flashes as what he
could be.

"He feels like he hasn't scratched the surface of what he can
do. And he's a young, aspiring, athletic tight end who can run. He'll be up the
seams at 6-6, 265. He can run up the seams with speed and be up over the top of
a lot of people. So we're excited about that. He's got a ways to go, but he'll
work at it. This could be a terrific move for both him and us."</p>

Bennett was a second-round draft choice by Dallas from Texas A&amp;M in 2008,
the 61st overall selection."</p></div>

Sounds like a great pickup....$2.5 million on a 1 year deal is very reasonable.</P>

Nice job by Reese addressing a big need.....really didn't want to burn a high draft pick on a tight end.</P>

I really like this move. I think we will be pleasantly surprised with his abilities! Plus the man has something to prove! Welcome Mr Bennett!

Thanks Roanoke. You can't be more clear than the expectations that TC and JR have laid out for MB. They have already set the tone and structure for him while also sending a message that he is and will be supported in achieving these goals for the benefit of the team. A great opportunity for a new beginning for MB.

Even if he doesn't work out, how could you go wrong with such a low risk deal?

This is really perfect, not even a week ago people were saying there is no chance we could afford him, who would've thought...

He signed for a very reasonable price....that tells me good things about:</P>

</P>

a) His character </P>

b) The attraction that Manning and maybe Coughlin are gaining throughout the NFL.</P>

it seems like a great match.

jeez, everyone's talking about his receiving skills.

you know what i'm most excited about? He's a big body whose had blocking responsibility in the NFL for a few years now.

We can throw the ball, we had trouble running it last year. i hope his blocking is above average.

From NY Post...</P>

Asked if he could be a tight end in the mold of Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham, Bennett did not hesitate when he said, “Yeah, no doubt. I just continue to work hard. If you look at those guys they get a lot of opportunities to make a lot of plays, I think I’m going to get a lot of those opportunities and I’m going to seize the moment. I always look at myself as a good player but I want to be great and this is the place where I think I can be great.’"</P>

Bennett visited the Giants headquarters, checked in with former Cowboys teammate Chris Canty, chatted with Justin Tuck, and was especially taken with Mike Pope, his new tight ends coach.</P>

“Coach Pope just seems like a guy you want to have a beer with,’’ Bennett said. “He’s lived 70 years of life, anyone who’s been around that long there’s a lot of knowledge there, there’s a lot of wisdom. Just from my conversation, talking about football and life, we just clicked right away. I think he understood me more than I thought he would when I came in. Sometimes you just click with people and I clicked with him.’’</P>

sounds like he has his head screwed on straight. I like that. I know the Giants look at character and smarts to go along with talent. Hopefully they found that in Bennet. </P>

Also Pascoe and Hopkins will be pushing to get time as well. It will be nice group of TE's hopefully getting along like the WR group. Competitve but also having each other's backs...</P>

You really think Beckum is going to see another game in a Giants uniform? I was hoping he'd be gone already.

Bennett is a good player, Romo always seemed hesitant to throw to him and it seemed to throw the timing of the plays off. Eli has really progressed in that regard, he doesn't throw to checkdown receivers who were open but are covered by the time he decides to throw the ball- fortunately Romo has not.
