FRENZY ON WR'S COULD IMPACT COULD IMPACT FUTURE NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN GIANTS AND HAKEEM NICKS, VICTOR CRUZ (http://www.giants101.com/2012/03/14/frenzy-on-wrs-could-impact-future-negotiations-between-giants-and-hakeem-nicks-victor-cruz/)

"General Manager Jerry Reese must have a headache after the first day of NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/) free agency.
No, the <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with New York Giants" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/" rel="tag nofollow">New York
Giants</a> did not go on a spending spree like teams such as the Tampa bay
Buccaneers and Washington Redskins. But that doesn't mean the first periodin
free agency did not heavily impact Big Blue.

Wide receiver <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Calvin Johnson" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/calvin-johnson/" rel="tag nofollow">Calvin
Johnson</a> of the Detroit Lions signed an obscene seven-year, $132 million
extension with $60 millionguaranteed. <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Vincent Jackson" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/vincent-jackson/" rel="tag nofollow">Vincent
Jackson</a> signed a five-year, $55.55 million deal with $26 million being a
sure thing.</p>

The Giants have two of their own stud wide receivers who will be in the
market for a new contract soon HakeemNicks and Victor Cruz.</p>

Nicks is set to be a free agent in 2014, and over the course of the last
three seasons, he has outperformed both of these Johnson and Jackson
statistically.</p>

Nicks: 202 catches for 3,034 yards and 24
touchdowns.</p>

Johnson: (in three more games than Nicks) 193 catches, 3,071
yards and 21 touchdowns.</p>

Jackson: 142 catches, 2,521 yards and 21
touchdowns</p>

The salary cap is expected to see a huge jump in 2014 due to the newly signed
television contracts hence why Jerry Reese felt comfortable allotting
guaranteed salaries to players like <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Eli Manning" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/eli-manning/" rel="tag nofollow">Eli
Manning</a>, <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with David Baas" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/david-baas/" rel="tag nofollow">David
Baas</a> and <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with David Deihl" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/david-deihl/" rel="tag nofollow">David
Deihl</a> in future years and shaving some base salary off 2011.</p>

Another player to watch out for is <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Osi Umenyiora" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/osi-umenyiora/" rel="tag nofollow">Osi
Umenyiora</a>.</p>

<a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Trent Cole" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/trent-cole/" rel="tag nofollow">Trent
Cole</a> of the Philadelphia Eagles recently signed an extension worth $53
million over four years. Osi will surely be looking to creep around that range.
That be the case, it may spell his end.</p>

Whatever <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Mario Williams" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/mario-williams/" rel="tag nofollow">Mario
Williams</a> signs for will represent the bare bones minimum for a guy like
Jason Pierre-Paul a few years down the line, and his deal combined with Cole's
provide a good template for a Justin Tuck extension.</p>

A lot of Giants players are happy about the first couple days of free
agency."</p>

Wow, I am shocked that Nicks has put up better numbers than calvin johnson the last 3 years....

Get Nicks and Cruz new long term contracts now, and give one to JPP next year (I'm assuming JPP is signed through next year).

Get them signed to long term contracts at least a year before they hit FA.

Well when you're getting double and triple teamed every play and you have QBs who couldn't hit you when you're wide open, it's hard to put up big numbers.

He has not. The author is not very good at math. The last 3 years Megatron has accumulated 3700 plus yards with 33 TD's.

Either way, the contracts being handed out will surely make it difficult to retain Nicks and Cruz. Hope we keep them both.

This is right on the money. Stats don't take into account the attention you receive from the opposition.

The stat comparison is actually between Nicks' and Megatron's respective first three years in the league

That might be (too lazy to check), however, the author of the article is trying to pass it off as the last 3 years.

I love Nicks, but he's not megatron. He doesn't garner the attention that megatron does nor can he do the things that megatron does. Nicks will probably want Vincent Jackson money and so will Cruz. Scary thought.
