NEW YORK GIANTS' THROWBACK PLAYERS: PHIL MCCONKEY (http://www.giants101.com/2012/03/19/new-york-giants-throwback-players-phil-mcconkey/)

"The majority of the New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Giants fan base will have memories of <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Phil McConkey" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/phil-mcconkey/" rel="tag nofollow">Phil
McConkey</a> running around the Rose Bowl with a white towel and pumping the
crowd up before Super Bowl XXI. He did that often in the regular season too.
Some may remember his touchdown in that same Super Bowl: A six-yard catch that
deflected off of Mark Bavaro’s fingers (and remember Bavaro hoisting #80 up in
celebration?). Perhaps a number of you remember Phil’s “almost” touchdown when
he was downed at the one yard line (where he grabbed his helmet in
disbelief).

Here’s some throwback player information some of you may not know:</p>

<a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Phil McConkey" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/phil-mcconkey/" rel="tag nofollow">Phil
McConkey</a> came to the Giants (1984-1988) as a 27-year old receiver in 1984.
He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served this country in the U.S.
Navy as a pilot for a full five years before becoming a New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/)
Giant. He was primarily a Special Teams player/returner and occasional receiver.
He also played for the Green Bay Packers (4 games on ’86), Phoenix Cardinals
(yes, Phoenix) and the San Diego Chargers before retiring. He finished #34 in
career punt return yards with 1,832. </p>

In 1990, McConkey ran for political office here in New Jersey (U.S. House of
Representatives, 12th Congressional District). Some fans even, uh, had one of
his “Vote McConkey” lawn signs. He came in runner-up (second) in electoral
votes.</p>

McConkey also did some broadcasting for the Giants, as well as with CBS and
FOX NY. He also worked in real estate, insurance and banking and is currently
President of Academy Securities—a financial investment firm that also caters to
the U.S. Military Veterans.</p>

Although Phil is based in California—where he resides—his heart is never far
from the New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Football (http://www.giants101.com/tag/football/)
Giants."</p>
