It depends on what you find funny. Some may think it's funny, some may not. It's all perception. In my opinion, I think he's doing a good job so far.

greenca190
05-05-2012, 11:53 PM
Meh, you could tell he was reading the entire opening monologue. The worst part about it was not pausing when people the crowd was clapping. I think they needed to put ::Stop when they clap:: in the dialogue cards, haha.

The main premise of SNL comedy is apparently demeaning the host in every way possible. That is supposed to be funny as you see the guest in compromising ways.

What, is Lorne Michaels above having to provide comedy? Has he grown bigger than the network? This is embarrassing.

Another thing I noticed was that Eli was in every skit. That is very rare to see a host do that.

Eli did well, even in this bits that had poor writing.

GreenZone

Overall, Tom Coughlin is funnier at his average press conference than the show. Eli was made a fool, anything but humor to get laughs. Except Little Brother and opening dialogue, the show itself was a joke.

NYGRealityCheck

Most of Eli's existing O-line was in the audience along with his wife.

They could have actually used the real Victor Cruz in the first skit.

They managed to get Eli in drag, but the skit sucked. Maybe if they had something along the lines of Eli dancing in the drag costume or taking it all off at the end to make it funnier. (i'm not into drag btw. just making that clear.)

Such irony with the game show skit "What is This?" Honestly SNL, what is this???

Bohemian

I thought Eli did a great job...and believe it or not, SNL has done way worse shows than this. I'm content with the three very funny sketches we got out of it...better than zero funny sketches. Plus, they worked Eli into every sketch. I saw an episode a whole back where the host was only in like one or two...so that's cool too. Again, Eli did what he could despite some crappy writing...gotta respect the balls it takes as a non-actor/comedian to host a show of this nature.

SNL has always, and I mean always had about 3 good skits, 2 good fake commercials, and the news.

All other skits are bad. Even in the days of Chevy Chase and John Belushi, that was the formula. You just remember the funny ones.

OMG what happened to SNL after all these years??? Are you kidding me?????SNL is sooo far removed from the days of Chris Farley, Mike Meyers, Phil Hartman, etc. Eli was the only reason I bothered to watch a full episode of SNL in more than 10 years.

The irony of this post is funnier than any of the skits done last night.

If you are someone of my age group, you look at the group of people you quoted and say, "Yeah...that's when SNL really started sucking!"

SNL should be remembered for the cast that made the show legendary. Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, and Steve Martin hosting. That was and always will be SNL at it's best.

I don't know what show anybody else was watching but, with the possible exception of the little brothers skit (which was a ripoff of Peyton's United Way skit anyway), the show was gawd-awful, even by current SNL standards. And Eli was awful too. I don't think he delivered a single line without his eyes locked on the queue cards.

And who cares. He's not a performer, comedic or otherwise. He's a two-time Super Bowl MVP, Hall of Fame quarterback. That's good enough for me.

If you are referring to the "original cast" era, then I have to strongly disagree. The thing that separates those days from now, IMO, is that you could sit through and entire episode without getting bored. Now it seems impossible, and I, like other posters from this thread, have not really watched the show in ages.

I could do a whole riff on the quality of SNL now as opposed to the old days (I remember Bill Murray), but what fascinated me was that Eli's performance mirrored what so many of us say about the Giants:

He played to level of the skit.

He did a fine job in the court skit, really laughed at himself in the Madden skit, and the recorded big brother bit was great.

I am unsure exactly how good he could have been in the Swedish talk show skit, the Cheech and Chong skit and the drag queen skit--all three were god awful as material.

I will add this-if you expected Eli to go on live TV and be polished, comfortable, and ad lib his way into comedy gold, you were kidding yourself.

I agree. The level of talent and the writing has steadily declined with every cast change. Of course, there are exceptions, like Eddie Murphy, Phil Hartmen, Chris Farley, etc. Too many young talents see it as a stepping stone to movie and TV careers. Most end up going nowhere. Remember that Billy Crystal and Martin Short saw it as a valid comedic medium unto itself. They were already established when they joined the cast. They weren't looking to be "discovered". The only real comedic talent I see in the current cast is Kristen Wiig.

But, the show will always survive. It has no competition in the time slot.

I think different era provided different really funny guys. Eddie Murphy was the funniest guy ever on SNL IMO. Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood, The Black Tooth Fairy, The Fifth Beatle and many more were LOL, tears rolling down my face funny.

Dana Carvey, Will Farell, were also very funny Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon skit was as good as it gets, Farell and Carvey imitate the Bushs like no other. Steve Martin was also funny although the era was before my time. I saw the reruns.

SNL has never been straight through LOL. Some skits hit some miss it's the nature of that style of comedy.

Look, we know Eli took a major beating in general last year, and even more during the 49ers playoff game.

But last night...he got no help with all the offensive lines.

Meanwhile, his offensive line seemed to just sit there and do nothing!

I've got to put the full blame Kevin Gilbride for last night's no-show.

Mad TV has been gone a few years now but it was giving SNL a run for its money in the ratings, but it too lost steam over the years. I guess it's like trying to be the best restaurant in Antarctica, eventually it's not worth the fight. Saturday night TV is a wasteland and SNL for all its foibles is an institution.

Such irony with the game show skit "What is This?" Honestly SNL, what is this???

yea i had same thought about Cruz in that spot...great time for a salsa...

Thought Eli did great, despite the writers really only going up with 2-3 good skits worth of material.

In all honesty, that show should be canceled just for the "Helga Lately" skit. I can't remember ever watching anything on TV and screaming "WTF is this crap" like I did with that skit. Even the canned laughter seemed extra forced for that one.

For the record, I miss the days of Kevin Nealon doing the Weekend Update. I think he had the best timing, voice, and jokes of all the weekend update hosts I have seen. Looked like Myers knew he was given crap up there, so I guess give him credit for trying to make it work.

Eli with the Name DIEZ on his jersey, calling AB, "Hey Quatro quatro." Eli and his wife getting dissed at a restaurant with other celebs, Sanchez and Tebow getting seated before him... A Rocky skit with someone doing Coughlin as Mickey, and Eli as Rocky... Eli sneaking into and betting on **** fights... Coulda done a Tyree Catch sketch.... Tyree with a big swatch of Velcro on his helmet and Eli gluing a piece to the ball... Eli at a restaurant and Plax comes in and comes over to say Hello and drops a gun and it accidentally shoots Eli in the leg.... Peyton gets another NFL MVP trophy and Eli asks Peyton if he can have his old Pop Warner MVP trophy for his mantle...

See, this is why your son is the amateur and the SNL crew are the professionals. The pros know you have to humiliate your guest and minimize the laughs. People can get hurt by laughing too hard.

Your son, on the other hand, has ideas which are both respectful and funny. Totally unacceptable. What would these add to assist in the quest to degenerate the culture?

SNL is an awful show. The writing is horrible.

Eli looked a little uncomfortable during the opening monolgue but it kinda worked with the “country bumpkin in NYC” skit they were trying to do. He should have been coached to pause for the crowd but his energy and entushiasim came through. Also they should have had better jokes for the opening monologue.

“Little Brothers” was funny and the courtrrom skit was good. It was good to see Eli making fun of himself. He has some hilarious facial expressions and overall good comedic timing.

Peyton looked more comfortable when he was host. Perhaps they should have them cohost the show together in the future. I think that would be funny.

Little Brothers was the best. His opening monologue was good minus the fact that his timing was off/he rushed it/didn't pause for the crowd's love which they were showering him with. "Fa'getta'bout it"!

It's frowned upon if Eli does it, but if Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise does it, they say "GREAT ACTING!"

yes... such a microscope... what the hell does that 'acting off his back foot' mean? My girlfriend is acts, so I could ask her, but I get the feeling that concerning Eli, it is completely irrelevant. The man gets ripped for throwing a pic while winning super bowls, and gets everyone to watch him do a fair job in snl, and gets completely ripped apart for not 'acting off his back foot'... wtf!

acting off your back foot is a vital part to any NFL quarterback/actor...guess you dont know acting...Love Eli but think RIvers would have done a much better job.

Hello Christine,

I too am a social worker (addictions, youth and family counsellor), and my organization closed last fall. I can imagine the stress you are going through. I definitely hope that your community has a spot for you, if not for now, for the near future. Definitely keep your spirits up, and just know that people like you are of tremendous value to your community. I wish you the best of luck.

Eli did good! Much better than I expected. Everyone's sense of humor is different. I thought the "What Is This?" game show skit was funny. You could tell he was kind of nervous for the monologue, but he's an athlete, not an actor like 99% of the people who host the show.

I hope this opens Eli up a little bit. Honestly, I don't think he's ever shown an ounce of personality publicly until yesterday. I'd like for him to loosen up more in front of the camera instead of being so guarded all the time.

Good job Eli!

The only thing Eli messed up was the opening when he was going through without a pause. But that was on the producers part, they shouldve told him to stop until the applause was over.

Other than that, Eli did what he could and HE was funny. The writers are the ones that sucked.

I am sure that her father was super bowl mvp twice (at least) supersedes the fact he did an hour of tv acting like a goof, are you like 14 Christine?

*I wish.** I was 14 in the 60's.

I don't care how many Super bowls Eli wins. His daughter will pay the price of the stupidest thing he ever did. I have worked with children for over 35 years. I know where this will lead. YOU must be 14 if you liked that crap. People on this board are always praising how classy the Giants organization is. I realize SNL isn't affiliated with the Giants organization, but you can bet your bottom dollar the jeers will come out around the league. How embarrassing....

the writing was horrible! with the exception of the madden and play60 which wasn't even that good of a skit, everything else was worse. i can't remember the last season i watched snl and now i know why. hey lorne! fire all the writers and get new ones.

they could've done so much with eli and the manning name.

how about dinner with the mannings (archie, olivia, cooper, peyton and eli) when they were kids but played as adults.

eli and abbey at home or in the bedroom since she was there along with the OL. hello!

and if that doesn't work eli and peyton even if he wasn't there will always get laughs because of the brother connection. a digital short format would've been good.

they could've even played the seinfeld card since eli loves the show. or a kareoke skit where he gets booed for being bad by giants, eagles, cowboys and redskins fans.

what do we get, a courtroom with texts and faces, occupy wall street, a game show, drag queens, cheech and chong.

no one can't write anything funny anymore at snl and its been like that for years.

That, and, they don't just write the skits we saw. They write more than 6 per week. Some don't make it due to legal issues as Fbomb mentioned, time constraints, or they just suck.

Believe me, I'm sure the writers came up with the ideas you all came up with. Which is why they did not air.

I just don't think they wanted to make the entire episode about football. They didn't do that with Peyton, or Tom Brady.

Sure, we think some of the skits some people spelt out here could possibly be funny live. We're also Giants fans. We know Eli Manning, and the Manning family, all too well. We're ****ing crazy when it comes to following the Giants and our quarterback. We can probably come up with some great skits that would translate over EXTREMELY well to other Giants fans that are as pathetic as ourselves.

But a large percentage of folks who tuned in Saturday Night aren't like us.

Exactly. The majority of the country can name 1 NY Giant and he was host.

My mother even had to ask me who Victor Cruz was in the Madden skit and I thought she semi followed what was going on with the Giants.

Vast majority of the country has no clue who Tom Coughlin is and they've long forgotten what Plaxico was known for.

Please. The esoteric gimmicks that actually were used on the show are takeoffs on things fewer people by far are aware of. Had they, it might be a bit funnier.

Take, for instance, the "Herb Welch" reporter on the Wall Street skit. Never heard of the takeoff, but looked him up here (http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/saturday-night-live-channels-infamous-wnyw-reporter_b5863). The Wall Street skit might have been a little bit funny for those familiar with **** (Richard) Oliver's work, but I doubt it. It was as lame as the unfunny Fox & Friends opener.

Ironic that the real Herb Welch was a starting safety for the Giants in the 80s.

I didn't see it, but I thought all along they should have had a skit sorta like the genius-Reagan skits that Phil Hartmann used to do. He'd play Reagan just acting aloof and then when the press and other non-VIPs cleared our, Reagan would wip off the tie and jacket and start barking out orders to his cabinet.

Would have been funny to see Eli like that in a skit with him in the locker room during halftime and cursing out his o-line and screaming how he's so ELITE, throwing stuff at people, and how he's sick and tired of carrying this crappy team. Press walks in and then he starts acting like the gentleman aw-shucks Eli that we all know.
