OSI UMENYIORA, BRANDON JACOBS PLEDGE TO WIN & RETURN SUPER BOWL RING AT 1m TWITTER FOLLOWERS (http://www.giants101.com/2012/05/19/osi-umenyiora-brandon-jacobs-pledge-to-win-return-lts-super-bowl-ring-at-1m-twitter-followers/)

couldn't fathom the legend and NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/) Hall of Famer losing his jewelry forever, so the
Chief devised a contest: get him to 1,000,000 Twitter followers to save the
ring.

<p style="TEXT-ALIGN: center">http://g101.sportsmedia101.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/LT-SBXXV-Ring.jpeg (http://catalog.scpauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=20039&amp;searchby=4&amp;searchvalue= 981&amp;page=0&amp;sortby=0&amp;displayby=2&amp;lotsperpage=100&amp;ca tegory=1&amp;seo=LAWRENCE-TAYLOR)</p>

Umenyiora pledges that at 1,000,000 Twitter followers, he will see to it that
he wins the auction for Taylor's Super Bowl ring and then allows a fan (chosen
at random) to personally delivery the ring back to LT.</p>

<blockquote>

get 1 million followers, I will buy LT's ring back and give it to him. I'm not
joking," Umenyiora tweeted (https://twitter.com/#%21/OsiUmenyiora/status/203818176683839489). "L.T is a football (http://www.giants101.com/tag/football/) LEGEND! If 1,000,000 people support him getting
his ring back, then it's worth it to me to buy it and give it back to

quest. Like Osi, Jacobs will buy the ring at 1,000,000 Twitter followers and
allow a fan (chosen at random) to personally deliver it to the legend.</p>

<blockquote>

"I am in with you on this," Jacobs tweeted to Osi (https://twitter.com/#%21/gatorboy45/status/203819838324473856). "I will follow the same
guidelines."</p></blockquote>

As of now, Umenyiora has 22,353 followers, which is up over 3,350 followers
since his initial tweet about the ring, Jacobs, meanwhile, has 2,214 followers,
which is up over 210 since he joined this campaign.</p>

Pls this is a pr stunt by osi,

Does one person on twitter even have a mill followers?

He proposed this bc he knows it can never be met...i dunno if theres a mill football fans that use twitter, let alone a mill giants fans on twitter,

If he was genuine, he could simply buy the ring back and give it to lt and do it w/o trying to get media attn...if lt wanted to publically thank osi thats one thing, to propose what osi is doing is another...

Hes gonna get a bunch more followers on twitter, which is prob his true agenda.

And no i dont hate osi and dont want him traded or released, i want him to retire a giant, but his is pr bs

What difference does it make? He's willing to buy the ring and return it. I suspect he'll do it whether he gets to 1M or not. If he doesn't, Jacobs will.

You suspect he will, but what if he doesn't? Is it really possible for him to go from a few thousand followers to a million over night? No chance. I'm not on twitter, but I knew he was never going to get to a million. What's he up to now 13k? If he buys it anyway he always intended to, if he doesn't he never did.

Gotta disagree with you on this. Yes, there could be some PR motive behind this, but to what extent?

And, fyi, there are some celebrities with 1 mil followers (often d bags like Ashton Kutchner, from what I've read), but probably not many. I personally despise what twitter has come to represent, and am not a user--although in this case I did sign up to follow Osi, for the cause.

Also, Osi reduced the criterion to 500,000 followers--still a high bar, but still-- nearly 2 hours ago, and was up to about 41,000 as of 1 hour ago.

To me, the point of this story is that Osi, like most humans, is not so simple to read, yet so many on this board have been eager to dismiss him in one way or another as a purely selfish person.

Even dismissing this as purely--or mostly-- a cheap publicity stunt is an example of not giving him the benefit of the doubt as a decent human being.

I'm willing to go so far as to suggest that the majority of Giants (and many non-Giant NFL) fans--especially those of us over the age of 39--had at least the thought go through our minds of "if I had the financial resources, I'd win the auction and give the ring back to LT".

What Osi has done by making this public resonates with most NFL fans, not just Giants fans--twitter or no twitter.

I admit to having absolutely no idea what the advantage is to Osi to dramatically increase the number of his twitter followers. I don't get that. I'm old, what can I say?

But I do see this as an attempt on Osi's part--AT NO COST TO FOLLOWERS and FANS--to publicly show LT that many fans are supportive of him, even in light of all his personally humiliating personal problems and demons. And what is so wrong with that?

I say--Good for you, Osi.

My first thought was along those lines; the 1,000,000 twitter followers is cool and all, but he's going to pick up that ring regardless.

If not, and whether he realized it or not, he is going to look like a jerk if he doesn't buy it--"I didn't hit million so I didn't think it was worth it to do a solid for a legend"

Eh, it's self serving. If he really wanted LT to keep his ring he wouldnt qualify it with getting 1 million twitter followers. Its like he's saying he'll do the good deed IF we all do something for him personally. Frankly I think it's cheesy now and it wouldve been great PR if he had gone about doing it and we all found out after the fact.

LT isn't actually selling the ring! He gave it to his son and it's actually his son selling it on EBay.
LT has already stated that it's now his son's property to do with as he pleases, and he says that he's ok with his son selling it.

If it turns out that Osi won't buy the ring back without the 1M, he is going to look like a clown. He has painted himself into a corner, even if it is all well intentioned. He has an ally in Brandon Jacobs and they could agree to split the cost evenly.

I really dont get why some of you are giving him a pass saying "lets wait till he gets his followers and then buys the ring" or something of that sort. Why does he need something in return to do a good deed? This is the whole point about this being self serving and describes Osi to a T. If he really felt bad about this, he wouldnt utilize it as an opportunity to boost his own image and twitter followers, he'd just get the man's ring back. If he were to actually just do that and not this twitter crap and then have it slipped to the media after the fact that he did that then I'd give him all the credit in the world but right now he is making this more about him than getting LT's ring back.

whats pathetic is not tolerating other peoples opinions. DID U NOT READ THE LAST PART OF MY POST? I support osi and want him to retire a giant.
i just personally believe this to be a pr stunt, wasnt it just a few eeks ago he said fans think hes a monster?
If he wanted lt to have it, he coulda done it quietly. Wtf does his twitter have to do with a damn thing? Why involve twitter?
Its still cool, and as usual gmen46 had a great post, even tho he had a diff stance, he doesnt go around acting superior, which is another thing i find pathetic; people who believe they r superior bc they have a diff opinion than some one else.

After reading gmens post, i realize it is a cool thing to do, hes right, alot of us if we had the funds would just buyy the ring back for him...

But osi is in the middle of a feud with the team, this just strikes me as fishy. Anyone who feels that makes me pathetic...well look in the mirror, ull get a true idea of what pathetic is...

And fyi, osi is a great player, love him on the field, hope he retires a giant...i just dont see how gaining attention and using a known pr tactic in twitter has to do with returning the ring to lt...u probably wouldnt bash an ahole billionaire scientist who cured cancer but will only release it until his face is on every billboard in america...

Excellent post.

Who wants to bet if his deadline isnt reached he aint buying it back for lt, and that he will partially fault the fans along the lines "the fans didnt want or care if lt got it back."...

Ill be the first to eat crow if he doesnt get the twitter followers but still gets it for lt...

That point is so true, doing a good deed is being selfless...the fact he has to get something to do a good deed kinda cancels it out...

If i had 1/4th osis money id get it for lt

The deadline wasnt met, and osi has gone silent.

He gained 35000 new twitter followers tho, so worked out for him...

Looks like he setup himself with what i predicted, "not enough fans care if lt got it back. I tried."

Maybe next osi will hold a telethon to raise the money for it. For every dollar donated, osi will only take. 70 cents...

Just Kidding

Well, it sold for $230,000 - and not to Osi

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/bids_for_lawrence_taylor_super_bowl_e4NdLVV6f52B8D Gw3bQuxM

As for how Osi went about it, I think it would've been better (and this is just MY opinion) if he had tweeted, "Gonna try to get LTs ring back for him. If you support LT - follow me. I'll pick a follower to give it to him"

Instead, he made this 'If I get 1 million followers, I'll buy it back' pledge. Why? Why 1 million? What was the point? I can understand people wanting to follow him in order to have a chance to be picked to give the ring to LT, but putting a cap on the number as a condition was pointless.

And Osi's reason that he did it this way because 'he doesn't know LT' doesn't make sense. Who cares if you don't know him? He was a Giant. You're a Giant. I'm sure he's met the guy a few times from when LT visits now and then. That was a ridiculous excuse.

All Osi had to do was just silently bid on the ring, then announce it only if he won, then put out a request that he was going to choose one of his twitter followers to deliver the ring to LT which would've garnered his coveted numbers. Now he just looks plain stupid, IMO

And, NO, I don't HATE Osi. I like him fine as a Giant and have no problem with his contract drama as long as he doesn't bring it on the field

Exactly. While his intent may have been honorable, to set this goal so far off in such limited time made it feel like an empty gesture.

I know Osi is a mouth and loves attention, thats pretty obvious. But people here try to make him sound like Shockey or even Tiki, which he isnt even close to it. He is a great teammate when he is out there healthy, according to his teammates. I just want at least 1 more season of Osi being a Giant with a chance to repeat, and I think it will happen. </P>

What difference does it make?** He's willing to buy the ring and return it.* I suspect he'll do it whether he gets to 1M or not.* If he doesn't, Jacobs will.

Let's wait and see what he does before we decide what he's going to do.
Wait, why do we have to wait? This is a messageboard and some of the posters may be right in what they have said. If we can;t talk about this then lets shut these boards down.

I'm not an agent but how does it help your negotiating strategy of "I am underpaid" and then you are announcing that you are going to buy something for 500K and then give it away!

The amount you deserve to be paid has nothing to do with how much money you have.

As for this whole twitter nonsense-

1 million followers was an unreasonable goal. He lowered it to 500,000 and still came up almost 450,000 short.

If it were Cruz or Tuck I wouldn't say a word because they don't say a word. O$i starts a drama, all about him every single off season. So he brings it on himself.

Sold..$230k. Neither Osi or Jacobs bought it.

Oh well, some well off person has a really nice paper weight. The sad part...His kid will have that $230k spent and gone in less than a year.

It is official I hate the Offseason Osi. He could do no worse. The LT ring selling thing was already overblown for him to use it to get twitter followers just shows at end of day he is singing "Look at what I can do!" One more year of this guy I guess I can take it, I can't waituntil September.

Well jeez whatya know. Osi or Brandon didnt do the right thing and buy the ring yet tried to cash in on sympathies of Giants fans and boost their own Twitter following in the process.

Honestly, out of all the Osi things this one bothers me the most and has moved me from a somewhat neutral position on him to downright disliking him. This is scummy, and he should be called out on it but some fans here kept wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt ignoring that he was prefacing his good deed based on him getting something in return. That was the sign that he had no interest in doing a good deed.

So now it just fits in with what Osi has shown us. Puts himself first, doesnt show up to ring ceremony. Is under contract but complains every offseason about his contract. Calls the GM a liar where originally I was willing to consider that there might of been a chance he was lied to now with this scam he pulled he has shown that he's likely the kind of person to just say anything to advance his cause.

I agree that it was a ****ty thing for them to do . . . . they had no intention of buying that ring . . . . just capitalized on a sad situation and used it for the trivial purpose oftrying to boost their Twitter followers . . . . pathetic.</P>

This is disgraceful. They should have bought the ring out right without involving the fans. Secondly, if they were really going to do a good deed, why tell the whole world. The best good deeds are done in private. I think the Giants should have bought the ring and kept it for the fans to appreciate. LT has never been that bright of a guy, was a great football player and I loved watching him. It is a sad day that he had to auction off his ring. If I was rich, I would have bought it and given it to the NY fans to enjoy.

Is Osi running for public office?

If not then there's really no virtue of pulling a PR stunt.

Are the Giants going to pay him more because he's a nice guy? No

Is a team going to overvalue him in a trade because he's a nice guy? No

So get off the man's back. He's trying to do something nice.
