OTA'S TO BEGIN WEDNESDAY...LIKELY WITHOUT OSI UMENYIORA (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2012/05/otas-to-begin-wednesday-likely-without-osi-umenyiora)

"The Giants will open their offseason of organized training activities (OTAs)
with a workout on Wednesday at the Timex Performance Center. But don't expect
Osi Umenyiora to be there.

According to a source, the oft-disgruntled pass-rusher will "probably not" be
in attendance at the first workout.</p>

That's not exactly a surprise, because OTAs are completely optional, and
Umenyiora routinely skips them to train in Atlanta. A handful of other Giants -
including safeties Antrel Rolle and Kenny Philips - also regularly pass on the
non-mandated workouts in East Rutherford.</p>

Umenyiora has been a no-show for the Giants' entire voluntary offseason
program, but there have been no mandatory events yet."

NY GIANTS' OSI UMENYIORA SAYS DESIRE FOR NEW CONTRACT IS MORE A BOUT RESPECT THAN MONEY (http://www.giants101.com/2012/05/21/new-york-giants-osi-umenyiora-says-desire-for-new-contract-more-about-respect-than-money/)

"New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/)
Giants defensive end <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Osi Umenyiora" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/osi-umenyiora/" rel="tag nofollow">Osi
Umenyiora</a> wants a new contract, and he wants to be paid like one of the top
DE's in the league. After a year of back-and-forth between he and General
Manager <a class="st_tag internal_tag" title="Posts tagged with Jerry Reese" href="http://www.giants101.com/tag/jerry-reese/" rel="tag nofollow">Jerry
Reese</a>, this is all common knowledge. However, this past Saturday, Umenyiora
said his desire for a new contract is more about the respect he feels he
deserves than the money itself.
<blockquote>

"New contract for me has never been about the money. Always about respect.
Most will never understand," Osi tweeted in response to a fan (https://twitter.com/#%21/OsiUmenyiora/status/203828577584676865).</p></blockquote>

There's a fine line between money and respect in an instance like this, and
it obviously draws parallels to greed.</p>

Back in late April, Reese revealed that the team had offered Umenyiora a new contract each of the last two seasons (http://www.giants101.com/2012/04/29/new-york-giants-jerry-reese-osi-umenyiora-has-been-offered-contract-extension/),
but that no deal was able to get done. Umenyiora responded to this public
revelation by claiming he was being portrayed as a "greedy pig (http://www.giants101.com/2012/04/30/angry-osi-umenyiora-says-new-york-giants-gm-jerry-reese-making-him-look-like-a-greedy-pig/)" and that these deals were no good; one based on
incentives and the other with half the guaranteed money.</p>

Through it all, Chief Osi has maintained that this is just the business
aspect of football (http://www.giants101.com/tag/football/),
and that Reese will always be his guy "no matter what happens. (http://www.giants101.com/2012/05/07/new-york-giants-osi-umenyiora-jerry-reese-will-always-be-my-guy-no-matter-what-happens/)" Still, the situation remains somewhat
volatile and no closer to being resolved now than it was a year ago at this
time. In fact, it's even gotten to the point where teammates are pleading with
Osi to show up at team facilities and not be "that guy."</p>
<blockquote>

"We need you on that field with us, bra. You already know this. I pray your
stuff gets taken care of the right way," <a href="https://twitter.com/#%21/antrelrolle26" target="_blank">safety Antrel Rolle
tweeted to Osi</a>.</p></blockquote>

The first round of Organized Team Activities (OTA's) begin on Wednesday and
it would be shocking if Umenyiora showed up for them."</p>

KELLEN WINSLOW JR: SHOULD THE NEW YORK GIANTS BE INTERESTED? (http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/5/21/3034222/kellen-winslow-junior-new-york-giants-tampa-bay-buccaneers-greg-schiano-nfl-rumors)

"Should the New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) be
interested in tight end <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2695/kellen-winslow">Kellen
Winslow</a> if and when the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/tampa-bay-buccaneers">Tampa Bay
Buccaneers</a> cut him loose? The talented Winslow, 28, is <a href="http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Kellen-Winslow-Jr-says-Bucs-will-look-to-trade-him.html">not
in the plans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers</a> -- that much has become obvious.

<div class="entry-body">

Let's make one thing clear -- the Giants are not going to make a trade
for Winslow. The guy has a $3.3 million salary for 2012, is signed for three
more years and has bad knees. Despite the 75 catches he made in 2011 trading for
a guy like this is not something the Giants so. What they do is sign a more
under-the-radar tight end with something to prove -- like they did with <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34521/martellus-bennett">Martellus
Bennett</a>.</p>

Still, if and when Winslow inevitably hits the free-agent market -- where his
price will likely be much lower -- is he worth at least kicking the tires
on?</p>

Matt Bowen (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/1857/matt-bowen) of the
National Football Post is <a href="http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Would-you-make-a-play-for-Kellen-Winslow.html">intrigued
by Winslow as a free agent</a>, saying "a healthy, in-shape Winslow is still a
tough matchup for a safety that rolls down from the middle of the field in
coverage."</p>

The Giants have Bennett and they drafted <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/155060/adrien-robinson">Adrien
Robinson</a> in the fourth round. Even with them around, would the 6-foot-4,
264-pound Winslow be worth the gamble?"
</p></div>NY GIANTS' PLAYERS UNDER PRESSURE: RAMSES BARDEN (http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/5/21/3033000/new-york-giants-players-under-pressure-ramses-barden)

"Over the next few weeks I thought it would be interesting to take a look at
'Players Under Pressure' as the New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants)
prepare to defend their Super Bowl title in 2012. These might be players who
find their roster spots in jeopardy. They might be players who underperformed in
2011. They might be players who are expected to step into larger roles in 2011,
or players who face competition for their spots in the lineup.<div class="entry-body">

When I thought about where to begin with this series I kept coming back to <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71289/ramses-barden">Ramses
Barden</a>. The 6-foot-6, 227-pound Barden will be entering his fourth season
since the Giants traded up and made him a third-round selection (85th overall)
in the 2009 draft.The Giants sent a third- and fifth-round selection to the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/philadelphia-eagles">Philadelphia
Eagles</a> to move and select Barden out of Cal-Poly, looking at his size and
physical gifts and seeing a player who might replace what they lost in the red
zone when <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2208/plaxico-burress">Plaxico
Burress</a> shot himself.</p>

After three seasons, Barden has yet to come close to justifying the Giants'
decision. He has managed to play in only 17 games and has caught just 15 passes,
none for touchdowns.</p>

The 2012 season comes down to this for Barden. With <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34493/mario-manningham">Mario
Manningham</a> in San Francisco Barden could finally find himself with a key
role in the Giants' offense. The third -- or fourth -- wide receiver spot is
there for the taking, if Barden can stay healthy and show that he can put that
big body to use helping the Giants in the red zone and by making some plays to
help the Giants convert third downs. If he can't, Barden could find himself
looking for work with another NFL team.</p>
<p class="extend-divide"><a name="storyjump"></a>http://cdn1.sbnation.com/images/blog/star-divide.v5e9d7f1.jpg</p>

Barden does not help the Giants on special teams. You know that Rueben Randle
will have a spot behind starters Hakeem Nicks (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71294/hakeem-nicks)
and Victor Cruz (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/109584/victor-cruz).
So will last season's third-round pick, Jerrel Jernigan. Even if Jernigan can't
grab a spot in the regular offense, his kickoff return skills guarantee him a
role. If Domenik Hixon (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2934/domenik-hixon)
shows that successive season-ending knee injuries have not robbed him of
play-making ability the Giants will show loyalty and give him a chance to show
what he has left. </p>

Is Barden a player, or a pretender? After three seasons he has played much
less -- and produced less -- that fellow 2009 third-round pick <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71291/travis-beckum">Travis
Beckum</a>. And Beckum is a player constantly criticized as one who has not
justified his third-round selection (100th overall). </p>

Personally, I am not sure we know the answer to what Barden is. Way back
during his first training camp he showed the ability to use his size and
strength to take balls away from smaller defensive backs. In limited regular
action, though, Barden has not shown the willingness to compete for balls in
traffic. More often, we have seen him shy away. He has not shown an ability get
open down the field. He has not forced the coaching staff to make him part of
the team's red zone passing attack.</p>

The Giants are patient, sometimes to a fault, with players whom they have
spent fairly high draft choices on. Remember Sinorice Moss (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2241/sinorice-moss).
After drafting Moss in the second round in 2006 the Giants waited more than four
seasons hoping Moss would justify what they thought of him when they selected
him, before finally parting ways with him during the 2010 season.</p>

Thus far, they have seemed inclined to show the same type of patience with
Barden. If, however, Randle, Jernigan and Hixon wind up ahead of Barden on this
season's depth chart you have to wonder if that patience will finally run
out.</p>

Excerpt: "Good morning fellow Giants fans. It's Monday, so we won't tell you how many
weeks until the start of the NFL season today, but suffice to say it was 90
degrees here in Wisconsin over the weekend and probably in many places in the
country. So summer is pretty much here. And that means a few things--the least
of which is that with each passing weekend, football season gets closer and
closer. It also means that pundits are anointing the Eagles and Cowboys (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/dallas-cowboys) as NFC East
champs already, all the while as the Giants put more jewelry on their fingers.
Let's see what else is going on this morning...." Read more...

GIANTS' PRACTICE SQUAD SLEEPERS TO WATCH (http://network.yardbarker.com/nfl/article_external/new_york_giants_practice_squad_sleepers_to_watch/10842668)

"Who Makes The Giants Practice Squad?

That is a good question.

The
Giants will have probably their bestpractice squad in recent years in 2012.
Usually, the Giants philosophy is to re-sign the best eight players they cut who
fit into their system. Now that may not always translate into the most talented
player as GM Jerry Reese and Head Coach Tom
Coughlin have always stressed in practice squad players a high level of
intelligence along with talent.

They want kids who can learn their
assignments and get through a practice with a minimal amount of mistakes.
Because of that you can have players with more “talent” left off the squad
because he can’t learn the playbook!

The Giants have done very well in
most recent years with their practice squad players. Some have found themselves
on the 53 man roster and contributed on game day. The Giants, along with every
other team in the NFL are required to carry up to 8 players on the practice
squad.

An NFL practice squad player makes roughly $5200 per week for
developing and hopefully making the 53 man roster. Often is the case that a
player on the practice squad could be released and then re-signed within a
week’s span; which was the case for Giants QB Ryan Perrilloux.

For 2012, the Giants will have difficult decisions to make
regarding who to keep and who not to keep on the practice squad, as the number
of candidates has grown and the Giants can only assign up to 8. The following is
my final assessment of who makes the Giants practice squad in
2012:

Ryan Perrilloux (QB): Perrilloux
seemed to have been on a merry go round in 2011, as the Giants released him and
then re-signed him a number of times. Still, I believe the Giants like his
makeup enough and have him on the 2012 practice squad
again.

Julian Talley (WR): Talley is a Victor
Cruz clone in appearance and the Giants can only hope that he develops
into a Victor Cruz in ability. The former WR out of Umass will
get a long hard look during training camp, but with the current depth on the
Giants WR squad; Talley will most likely end up on the practice
squad.

Matt McCants (OT): McCants will have every
opportunity to make this team. However; with the signing of Sean
Locklear and the drafting of Brandon Mosley.
McCants could find himself starting out the year on the
practice squad and possibly returning as the year unfolds.

Dwayne
Hendricks (DT): Hendricks will have an extremely tough time making the
53 man roster with the recent arrival of Rogers, the drafting
of Kuhn and the return of Austin at DT. Now
this can all change if Rogers has nothing left in the tank and
Kuhn’s is a bust. Then Hendricks has a shot at
the 53 man roster, but in my opinion; Rogers and
Kuhn will outplay him.

Adewale Ojomo (DE):
Ojomo is a project and I could be reaching here. However; from all the
reports and video I’ve seen Ojomo, the Giants would be wise to
assign Ojomo to the practice squad. The former Miami Hurricane
has untapped talent and maybe, just maybe the Giants can have him develop at his
own pace and hopefully produce another pass rusher in the
end.

Jack Muasau (OLB): Muasau is from a small school
(Georgia State) and didn’t get the exposure he deserved. Described as a tackling
machine with an endless motor, Muasau will impress in training
camp, but will eventually find himself on the Giants 2012 practice
squad.

Janzen Jackson (S): Jackson is a solid player who
had personal issues in college; which effective his draft stock. I believe the
Giants have enough depth at the safety position and would most likely place
Jackson on the practice squad. Jackson will show enough during
training camp and preseason games to warrant the assignment.

There are
some names I left off that many may feel should have been added to this list.
Players like Joe Martinek, Christian Hopkins, Adrian Tracey and
David Douglas come to mind. I believe that
Martinek will make the 53 man roster, Hopkins
could start the year on the 53 man roster and Tracey and
Douglas are long shots making the practice
squad.

Footnote: Rod Smith (WR) is the only non-drafted
player to go from the practice squad to a Pro Bowler. He is also the only
non-drafted WR to amass over 10,000 yards in receiving."

GIANTS' DYNAMIC WIDE OUT ON "CRUZ" CONTROL (http://network.yardbarker.com/nfl/article_external/giants_dynamic_wide_out_on_cruz_control/10840403)

"The defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants had a d***ling dream like
season in 2011 that astoundingly ended with another surprising defeat over the
New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. A team built upon pure talent and
unpredictability set the standard for the year, as the Giants became the most
unlikely playoff contenders amongst a solid core of NFL dynamos such as the
Packers, Steelers, and Patriots. Part of their huge success is credited to
several key players who emerged as rising superstars in the NFL such as Victor
Cruz, who is seemingly becoming one of the hottest wide receivers currently
playing the game. He’s the talk of the town in New York and one of their most
beloved, even with Tim Tebow hogging some of the Broadway glitz and glam. But
nonetheless, this unlikely hero has risen to a new level in the NFL ranks and
the burning question most of us want answered is how high is this man’s star
going to rise?

Victor Cruz grew up in the rough city of Patterson, New Jersey. Going into
college Cruz was recruited by several 1-AA schools to play football, but none
who weren’t nationally recognized for the sport. With so very few options, Cruz
settled on the University of Massachusetts and was delighted by the fact that he
just got the opportunity to continue to play football, even if that meant
studying more to earn higher grades. He red-shirted his freshman year and
practiced with the team until he was able to start during his junior season.
Overall Cruz finished with 11 touchdowns, 131 catches and just under 2,000 yards
receiving for his final two years in college. Not bad for a guy of his stature
now.</p>

In the 2010 NFL Draft, Cruz went undrafted as he watched teams draft player
after player that he matched up well against. No teams made any commitments to
him therefore leaving Cruz little, if any hope of the NFL dream. It wasn’t until
the Giants picked him up that Cruz was finally going to get his prime
opportunity to shine.</p>

Cruz exploded in his rookie year during the pre-season helping him gain
significant recognition. He finished first in receiving yards amongst all
wide-outs with 297 yards during the pre-season, having a huge game against the
New York Jets with six catches for 145 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-16
rout. Unfortunately, the injury bug bit hard and Cruz only appeared in three
regular season games without a catch before going on injured reserve with a
hamstring injury.</p>

It was in 2011 that Cruz became the team’s fourth receiver due to the loss of
receiver Steve Smith. His role was expanded when Mario Manningham and Domenik
Hixon were hindered due to injury giving Cruz a chance to prove his worth to a
Giants team desperate to make a Super Bowl run. Cruz had a standout season
ending with a franchise record 1,536 receiving yards on 82 receptions, while
snagging 9 touchdowns for the year. His agility, quickness, and ability to read
the play have stunned many teams alike and he is now one of the most nationally
recognized players in the NFL.</p>

So what is it about this guy that has Giant’s fans bellowing out his name every
time the ball is tossed his way? Your guess is as good as mine but Victor Cruz
does indeed have the dynamic speed, agility, ferocity, talent, and mentality of
a great football player. Time after time Cruz has proved himself on the gridiron
with aw aspiring catches, juke moves, and salsa touchdown celebration dances.
It’s his character on and off the field that have Giants fans going crazy for
the guy.</p>

So what’s next in this Cinderella story come to life? The Giants are coming
off a remarkable season (due in big part to Victor Cruz) and now look to repeat
in the 2012 season. One thing is for sure though; Cruz is going to be a vital
part of the Giants future success."
</p>LESEAN MCCOY ONE UPS OSI UMENYIORA AGAIN (http://network.yardbarker.com/nfl/article_external/lesean_mccoy_one_ups_osi_umenyiora_again/10837262)

"Philadelphia Eagles all pro running back LeSean “Shady” McCoy will be having
plenty of happy days to celebrate besides Mother’s Day after inking a a
five-year extension worth $45 million with $20.765 million guaranteed.

After posting 1,309 yards rushing and 17 rushing touchdowns Shady has placed
in himself in the best back in the league conversation.</p>

McCoy is the most versatile and consistent back in the NFL (http://www.bet365sportsbookonline.com/football) right now and his
importance to the Eagles can not be understated as big red himself Andy Reid
made sure to personally get himself involved in the negotiations.</p>

Shady is a gem at running back, needs no entourage, and is as durable a
player you will find in the NFL right now.</p>

Here’s a quiet shot fired at fellow Tweefer Osi Umenyiora who can’t buy
himself a contract extension at this time.</p>

Your move Osi."

2011'S BEST PERFORMANCES: SAFETIES (http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/05/19/2011s-best-performances-safeties/)

Excerpt: "<span>5t. Kenny Phillips, New York Giants:
<span>Week 1 at Washington
(+4.5)</span></span>

You sometimes forget about Kenny Phillips, the former first-round pick for
the Giants, yet he’s turned himself into one of the most consistent safeties in
a league short in that area. In Week 1, he picked-up a couple of pressures, a
pass deflection, and three tackles for less than 2-yard gains. Throw in forcing
another incompletion with a big hit on Anthony Armstrong and you have our joint
fifth-best performance from 2011 of all safeties." Read more...

"An NFL rules proposal that would require mandatory use of thigh and knee pads
starting with the 2013 season will meet strong resistance from the NFL Players
Association if approved Tuesday at the league’s spring meeting according to Alex
Marvez of FOXSports.com (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/NFLPA-mandatory-thigh-pad-rule-plans-to-file-grievance-052112).

A source said the NFLPA believes the measure would violate the collective
bargaining agreement reached with the league last year in regard to “working
conditions.” If the proposal is passed by at least 75 percent of NFL owners (24
of 32), the NFLPA plans to file a grievance with an arbitrator.</p>

The NFLPA contends that mandatory pad use could become approved only from a
side-letter agreement with the league to the CBA, the source said. The NFLPA
also was aware that the proposal would be presented for a vote at the NFL’s
spring meeting.</p>

The NFL is proposing the pad rule as part of commissioner Roger Goodell’s
player safety initiatives. But a source said that the league hasn’t presented
the union any firm data that prove the use of thigh and knee pads would decrease
injuries despite multiple NFLPA requests.</p>

“It sounds obvious that it would (reduce injuries), but it’s not necessarily
true,” the source said.</p>

The NFLPA’s stance against the padding proposal is yet another sign of the
rift between the union and NFL. The NFLPA has helped four players file a
grievance against the suspensions that Goodell handed down for their alleged
involvement in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal. The NFL and NFLPA also
remain unable to agree upon protocols for human growth hormone testing."</p>

NFL OWNERS MAY MAKE HIP, THIGH, KNEE PADS MANDATORY (http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/5/21/3034636/nfl-owners-may-make-hip-thigh-knee-pads-mandatory)

"</font></font>NFL owners are reportedly set to vote on a proposal (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/nfl-owners-may-make-expanded-pads-mandatory-at-spring-meetings-052112)that would make knee, hip and thigh
pads -- which many players stupidly resist wearing -- mandatory, beginning in
2013.<div class="entry-body">

FOX says:</p>

The rule's genesis stems from the belief that players would be afforded
better protection, which falls in line with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's
safety initiatives. For example, some players who suffer bruised quadriceps
muscles have been found not to be wearing thigh pads.</p>

There are those players, though, who are willing to take that risk. Some
players wear no padding or just use plastic shells that offer a lesser degree of
protection.</p>

I already gave away how I feel about this. I don't care about looking
'stylish,' I think players who don't wear the proper, full padding are just
being dumb.</p>

I hope, obviously, that the measure passes. This is a case of the NFL not
only protecting the players, but protecting them from themselves."</p></div><font size="4"><font size="3">
