One of the reasons he will go down as the worst HC in Giants history.

The "read and react" defensive strategy had something to do with it too.

Me too. I couldn't believe he named Hostetler the QB before camp even began. That was just wrong. I've said this on other forums, I don't there was an athelete who played in NY who was more criticized than Phil Simms.

Anyone who watched the Gmen in the 80's loved Simms...i did too. But Hostetler didnt do anything to warrant going back to the bench. Difficult decision and RH went with the younger and more athletic guy. Its not like he just picked Hoss cuz he wanted too. The guy just won the dam SB.

Nor did Phil.

I watched a replay of that 90 SB a few months ago and was surprised at how many open receivers Hoss missed in that game. Amazing what you see when you're not hanging on every play. He was a good player but he was constantly unhappy.

He was never the player that Phil was.

I didn't have anything against Hostetler, but you don't give the starting job before training camp and definitely not because the original starter got hurt. Worse case scenario you let them battle it out in training camp.

Plus Phil did go 11-3 thats year before getting hury against the Bills and he was a big reason we got to the Super Bowl

Same arguement and same scenario of Young/Montana. Either way you cut it...its gonna be a QB controversy and a no win situation.

As I said... i loved Simms and woulda had no probs if RH started him. Im just not gonna hate Hoss or take anything away from him. He was a good QB in the prime of his career.

Love Phil, Rodney and all those guys. Mixed feelings on Parcells. Can't argue with the coaching side of it. He is at least Coughlin's equal however, his conniving, self servingside preclude him from being a true Giant IMO.

Parcells has a compass that points in a different direction than Coughlin's. With Parcells the compass always points toward the mirror.

You can't just disrespect a QB that has been on the team for 11 season and started for most of those seasons like that.

At the very least make them battle for the spot in training camp. Don't make that decision before that.

In theory that sounds good...but you gotta consider the distraction that causes by NOT claiming a starter. Just imagine the Brees/Rivers or Favre/Rodgers with the NY media... Good Lord; just look at the Tebow/Sanchez mess!! You just cant have that uncertainty here with this media.

I've never heard anyone defend Ray Handley before. The man proved himself clueless.

His decision to start Hostetler CAUSED the distraction to our team. There would NOT have been any controversy had he started Simms. Hostetler would have been unhappy just like he had been all those previous years.

No offense to Jeff either. He was a good QB. He just wasn't as good as Phil.

Where in the hell do you see me defending RH? Fact is whatever he decided wulda CAUSED a distraction. But coaches generally will decide a starter before training camp. Look at RG3, Kurt Warner got the nod before Eli. Fact is Hoss did nothing not to warrant being named the starter. And your idea that everyone in the media and NYC wulda just happily gone with Simms and kumbayad thru the streets of Brooklyn is freakin hilarious.

It was a crazy time in Giants history. Two SB winning QBs on the same roster with a first year coach. I was a big Simms guy but that being said, I loved the roll the Giants got on with Hoss in '90.

Hoss might not have been as good as Simms but he was pretty good and delivered. It was fun to have a running QB that could also throw.

He had some good years with the Raiders. He was, by no means, just a one year wonder.
