NEWARK STAR LEDGER

GIANTS' PRESEASON OPENER: THREE THINGS WE LEARNED (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_preseason_opener_three_1.html)

Excerpt: "1If this team stays healthy, it will have some serious depth.RB D.J. Ware
(16-yard run, 2-yard spinning TD); DE/LB Adrian Tracy
(sack, forced fumble); DT Dwayne Hendricks
(sack, tackle for a loss) and WR Isaiah Stanback
(one-handed TD grab) were among those who had very good showings. And not just, "Well-somebody-out-there-has-to-make-a-play'' kind of games.
They stood out." Read more...
YOU GRADE 'EM: GIANTS VS..JAGUARS (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/you_grade_em_giants_vs_jaguars.html)

GIANTS DROP PRESEASON OPENER, 32-31 TO JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_drop_preseason_opener_3.html)

Excerpt: "Prince Amukamara didn’t realize he threw his fist into the humid air when he made the play that saved his evening.

It was a forced fumble in Friday night’s 32-31 preseason loss to the Jaguars — a great play no matter the circumstances but an even better one considering he’d just given up a touchdown at the end of a disastrous drive for him." Read more...

TOM COUGHLIN, NY GIANTS SEARCH FOR REPLACEMENTS IN PRESEASON OPENER LOSS TO JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/tom-coughlin-ny-giants-search-replacements-preseason-opener-loss-jackonsville-jaguars-article-1.1134170)

Excerpt: "David Wilson (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/David+Wilson)
returned a kickoff for 48 yards, rushed for 43 yards, and had explosive run after explosive run.

But with 1:55 to play and the Giants trailing by a point, Wilson didn’t touch the ball, missing a handoff and leaving his quarterback, Ryan Perrilloux, scrambling for his life.

“I knew the play,” Wilson said, explaining that the Giants had called two plays in the huddle. “I just thought it was the other play. I definitely can’t commit mistakes like that.”

It was that kind of night for the Giants in Friday’s 32-31 preseason loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Field, a game thatTom Coughlin (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Tom+Coughlin) called “sloppy, sloppy.” Read more...

GIANTS DEFENSE NEEDS STRONG START TO SEASON AND CONSISTENT PLAY THROUGHOUT TO BACK UP OFFENSE (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/ny-giants-defense-strong-start-season-consistent-play-back-offense-article-1.1134237)

Excerpt: "Eli Manning is “elite” now and almost everybody knows it, and the Giants haves the weapons to field one of the most potent offenses in the league. As long as the quarterback stays healthy, nothing is going to change that.

That’s why their fortunes this season are tied much more closely to what happens on the other side of the ball.

That’s nothing new. It was the same last season when for much of the season the Giants’ defense was a disaster. When they put it all together, when the defensive backs figured out how to cover and the pass rush was unleashed, the Giants became an unstoppable and very complete team." Read more...

NEW YORK POST

GIANT TALENT, BUT UP AND DOWN OPENER (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/big_blue_seesaw_h95XVdynsmkkOl2NB71gVN)

Excerpt: "A jumble of enticing talent intertwined with glaring gaffes highlighted and low-lighted last night’s preseason opener for the Giants, as the Super Bowl champions unveiled some youngsters who produced spills and thrills in a typically-uneven 32-31 preseason loss to the Jaguars.

“We start men, we didn’t start very well, but we start,’’ coach Tom Coughlin said.

The championship coach was feeling a bit down about all the miscues that turned a comfy 24-7 second-quarter lead and a 31-21 fourth-quarter advantage into a loss that will soon be forgotten — as long as Coughlin is able to clean up what he called “a sloppy, sloppy finish.’’ Read more...

JERNIGAN, HOSLEY STRUGGLE TO CATCH PUNTS (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/no_show_of_hands_zYSjVee3exBbdAckUlMLbN)

Excerpt: "The mantra, as repeated last night by Giants coach Tom Coughlin, goes like this:

“The number one thing is ball security as a punt returner. The first thing you’ve got to do is catch the ball.’’
The number one thing was not accomplished, as the Giants were done in by muffed punts by rookie Jayron Hosley and second-year Jerrel Jernigan last night in their 32-31 preseason-opening loss to the Jaguars.
Hosley had a 20-yard punt return and a sack on defense, but he handed the Jaguars the ball on the Giants’ 2-yard line in the final minute of the first half, trimming a 24-7 lead to 24-14." Read more...

GIANTS' MARTELLUS BENNETT: "I HAVE A LONG, LONG WAY TO GO" (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/11/new-york-giants-martellus-bennett-i-have-a-long-long-way-to-go/)

Excerpt: "During the New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/)' 32-31 preseason loss (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/10/new-york-giants-fall-to-jacksonville-jaguars-32-31-in-preseason-opener/) to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday night, tight end Martellus Bennett (http://www.giants101.com/tag/martellus-bennett/) was one of the many payers who flashed. The fifth-year veteran hauled in three passes (on three targets) for 27 yards and a touchdown, proving that he's got more to offer the team than just his superb blocking ability. However, after the game Bennett was humble and uncharacteristically subdued, acknowledging that he's far from comfortable in the offense and still has a long way to go." Read more...

CUTS LOOM FOR PLAYERS ON THE BUBBLE (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/11/cuts-loom-for-on-the-bubble-new-york-giants-players/)

Excerpt: "While the NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/) fans of the world are frothing and chomping at the preseason bit, there are some that aren’t. Soon, the line: “Coach wants to see you in his office” will be uttered to players putting all they’ve got on the line.

The first bit of roster-trimming -during offseason- is prior to training camps where most of the now 90-man roster (up from 80) is on the active list. However, in just about two weeks -under NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/) bylaws- first “active” (hark back to this word repeatedly, later) list cuts are on the Tuesday after the third preseason weekend: August 27, by 4:00pm EST. The roster must be slimmed down to 75 active players, so there are now 15 men fighting for their Big Blue lives in the next few weeks." Read more...

Excerpt: "Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell (http://www.giants101.com/tag/perry-fewell/) was still a hot name in the head coaching mix approximately 18 months ago. As he went on to win a Super Bowl ring with his New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/)Football (http://www.giants101.com/tag/football/) Giants, the enthusiastic coordinator has had a pretty quiet six months following that great win. JAGUARS 32 - GIANTS 31: PRESEASON GAME 1 REACTION (http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/8/11/3235439/jaguars-32-giants-31-preseason-game-1-reaction-report-card-analysis)

Excerpt: "Here at Big Blue View a 'Kudos & Wet Willies' summary normally followsNew York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants)' games, detailing who played well and who did not.Our 'K&WW' feature will, however, have to wait at least one more week.
Truth is, very few players for the Giants fit into the 'Kudos' or the 'Wet Willies' categories. An argument can be made that a great majority of the Giants should get 'Kwillies' for their work in Friday's 32-31 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/jacksonville-jaguars). Rather than hand out about 20 'Kwillies,' for players who actually helped both teams, we will review the game in a different fashion." Read more...

Excerpt: "Here is some of the post-game reaction from head coach Tom Coughlin and New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) players following Friday's preseason-opening 32-31 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/jacksonville-jaguars).
"It was very disappointing to come here and be up 24-7 and lose the game. We have a lot to learn from this and a lot to improve upon. ... You catch a punt twice and you’re not going to be in that position (to lose the game)."

GIANTS MISTAKES LEAD TO BIG BLUE LETDOWN (http://insidefootball.com/blog/archives/4899)

Excerpt: "“Sloppy.”
That was Giants head coach Tom Coughlin’s summary of his team’s pre-season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, who overcame a 24-14-point halftime deficit to top the Giants 32-31 at EverBank Field. The Giants, hoping to get a good look at some of their younger players, saw the quality of play deteriorating sharply as in the second half, the Giants saw their third down percentage fall from 75% to 25%; they racked up six penalties (vs. 4 in the first half); and they gave up four second-half sacks. The back-breakers in this game, though, were the muffed punts by Jerrel Jernigan and Jayron Hosley deep in their own territory, each leading to a Jaguars’ score." JAGUARS 32 - GIANTS 31: HITS, MISSES, AND MUSINGS (http://insidefootball.com/blog/archives/4903)

Excerpt: "Some good, some bad.I’ll start with the positives.* The Giants’ running game received a much-needed shot in the arm, finishing with 26 carries for 126 yards *4.8 yards per carry) and one touchdown. Yes, it’s only one preseason game, but remember, last year during the 16-game regular season, they finished with a dismal 3.5 yards per carry average, so there’s reason to hope that their rushing problems are over.* The Giants average starting field position was their 39 while the Jags’ average was their 34. Moreover, they took advantage of some excellent field position courtesy of some Jaguars’ gaffes deep in their territory, scoring three touchdowns from Jacksonville gaffes.

* Overall, the defensive front turned in six sacks, eight tackles for a loss, 10 quarterback hits, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Not a bad night overall." Read more...

THE DAY AFTER: COUGLIN'S ASSESSMENT (http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/15822/the-day-after-coughlins-assessment)

Excerpt: "Tom Coughlin was encouraged by some of the performances he got from certain individuals in Friday's preseason-opening game, but he also sees a lot of things to work on for the defending champs.

Coughlin said the team emerged from the 32-31 loss to Jacksonville without any major injuries, but he also said he had not had his meeting with the medical staff on Saturday before talking to reporters. " Read more...

Excerpt: "On his first professional carry, David Wilson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14887/david-wilson) was smacked by two Jaguars for no gain. But the elusive running back showed on the very next carry why the New York Giants (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyg/new-york-giants) chose him with their first-round pick.Wilson shot up the middle, shifted and cut his way toward a 26-yard gain. I look at preseason games as an extension of training camp.Have we ever had an impressive pre-season? I seem to recall a year where we went 6-0 like in the Tarkenton era and then proceed to lay nothing but eggs in the regular season. Everything will be fine. No injuries, decent looks from most starters and some flash from the new guys. Time for me to head to the pub boys and girls, see you later!

Not really and when you think about it, why would we expect one? The whole purpose of these game sis to get players ready." Had we not had those punt issues it wouldn't have been a bad outing.
