GIANTS NOT STARTING WAR OF WORDS WITH JETS OVER PRESEAON GAME (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_not_starting_war_of_wor.html)

Excerpt: "You folks know where I stand (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_will_beatty_returns_to.html) on this Giants-Jets chatter that never really seems to go anywhere each preseason because, well, it's the preseason.
Today, the questions began here at UAlbany. No one seemed to be having much of it, particularly Osi Umenyiora."The Jets are a good football team, but us playing them, unless it’s like a Super Bowl game, it’s really not that big of a deal," Umenyiora said. "I think definitely the NFC East is our biggest rival. You know, the Jets, anytime we play them, it’s good because we’re in the same city and same town. A lot of those guys we know and I respect them a lot, but as far as rivalry goes, it’s definitely teams in the NFC East."Amen."

GIANTS' ADRIAN TRACY CAPITALIZING ON HIS OPPORTUNITIES (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_adrian_tracy_capitalizi.html)

Excerpt: "Adrian Tracy (6-2, 252 pounds) is built just like Osi Umenyiora (6-3, 255), so Tracy uses the two-time Pro Bowl selection to compare his progress and technique.
In Friday’s preseason opener against the Jaguars, Tracy had a moment Umenyiora has often experienced in the past when he got too far upfield on a touchdown run that slipped underneath him and took advantage of his pass-rush aggressiveness. That mental mistake had Tracy thinking his solid performance was actually a bad showing, even though Umenyiora assured him it “happens to the best” of players.

GIANTS' JAYRON HOSLEY ACCEPTING ADVICE AND MOVING ON AFTER MUFFED PUNT (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_jayron_hosley_accepting.html)

Excerpt: "Give Jayron Hosley credit for one thing above all else: After he muffed a punt in Friday’s preseason opener against the Jaguars, the rookie stood right beside an agitated Tom Coughlin on the sideline instead of hiding in the far reaches of the bench area.
“He’s going to find you regardless. He’s going to say what he has to say to you,” Hosley said today before the first practice of the final leg of training camp. “He just told me, ‘Focus on the ball. Keep your eyes on the ball and look it all the way in.’ ”For those who don’t understand how and why Coughlin remains motivated to continue coaching instead of riding into the proverbial sunset with his two Lombardi Trophies in the saddle next to him, understand he’s still stewing about Hosley’s bobbled punt return and one by Jerrel Jernigan — the combination of which gave Jacksonville 10 points and the victory.A preseason victory, mind you." FORMER GIANTS' LINEMAN STACY ANDREWS LEARNS OF CONCERNING BACK ISSUE AFTER WORKOUT WITH TEAM (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/former_giants_lineman_stacy_an.html)

Excerpt: "The Giants (http://www.nj.com/giants) will have an empty roster spot to fill today when they officially waive undrafted rookie Janzen Jackson. Though Jackson is a defensive back, it doesn't mean the team will add another player at that position.

More pointedly, since I know some people were thinking and asking about Deon Grant, my sense is no, it won't be him taking Jackson's place on the roster.

What the Giants need at this point is a player to help them get through camp and the preseason. To me, that means they could use an offensive lineman because tackles Will Beatty and James Brewer are dealing with back issues, while backup center Jim Cordle experienced swelling in his leg following Friday's preseason opener (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_drop_preseason_opener_3.html)." GIANTS TEST YOUNG PUNT RETURNERS IN FIRST PRACTICE SINCE MISCUES AGAINST JAGUARS (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_test_young_punt_returne.html)

Excerpt: "Before I get to the action, there was an enlightening and humorous exchange between Tom Coughlin and the reporters at his press conference today in regard toMartellus Bennett.
It began with a question from a reporter about Bennett being an interesting guy and what he’s like to Coughlin.

“He’s an interesting guy,” Coughlin repeated with a laugh. Asked to elaborate, he said, “I wouldn’t have the proper vocabulary.”
Okay, so how much does Coughlin allow Bennett to be himself?“Oh, he’s himself. There isn’t any question about that. And he’s gotten a lot better at that,” Coughlin said, chuckling through this next part: “I didn’t hear any of the stuff that he said, but it’s been reported to me some of the things he’s said.”By that, Coughlin surely means the “Black Unicorn” (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_martellus_bennett_pushi.html) et al." NICKS TAKEN OFF PUP LIST, READY TOP RETURN TO PRACTICE (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2012/08/nicks-taken-off-pup-list-ready-to-return-to-practice)

Excerpt: "Hakeem Nicks took a big step towards playing in the regular-season opener when he passed his physical on Monday and was removed from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Nicks, the Giants’ No. 1 receiver, had been there all summer thanks to a broken bone in his foot that he suffered in a practice on May 24. He had surgery the next day to have a screw put in the broken bone and was expected to be out 12 weeks.

Now, 11 weeks and four days later, Nicks is expected to practice with the Giants on Tuesday in their final practice of training camp at the University at Albany. Nicks will be “limited” during his first three practices, but that couldn’t dampen his enthusiasm for getting back on the field." Read more...

GIANTS' VICTOR NOT IN CRUZ CONTROL (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/ny-giants-victor-cruz-ready-face-ny-jets-team-ways-turned-a-star-article-1.1135105)

Excerpt: "Victor Cruz (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Victor+Cruz) admits he’ll be doing a little reminiscing this week, knowing he’s preparing for a preseason game against the Jets. He still cherishes the memories of his breakout performance against them two summers ago. He can still see the Jets coaches on TV shaking their heads in disbelief.

“It’s always a little nostalgic to line up against them knowing that essentially they were the team that kind of brought me into this league in a unique way,” the Giants’ receiver said. “It’s always special to play the Jets.”

Special, perhaps, but much different this time because for the first time in his three seasons this game won’t matter as much to Cruz. He’s no longer an unknown player battling to make the roster. He’ll face the Jets on Saturday night at the Meadowlands as an established star." Read more...

GIANTS' ROLLE PLAYED WITH TWO TORN ROTATOR CUFFS LAST SEASON (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/rather_just_eat_the_pain_Nl0zy7SZQqLQiYfPNmI8FI)

Excerpt: "He knew there was something very wrong with both his shoulders last winter, but Antrel Rolle refused to go through the customary routine of getting an X-ray or MRI to determine why he was in such excruciating pain.

No time for that. Not with a regular season to be saved and a Super Bowl title to claim.
“I wasn’t going to go for any tests, I didn’t want to know what it was,’’ the Giants safety told The Post yesterday after lunch at the University at Albany. “I knew it was something. I know my body. I’m a fast healer, not too many things really bother me. Little nicks and bruises, I kind of get over it in a day or two.’’ Read more...

BACK AT DE, ADRIAN TRACY IMPRESSING GIANTS (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/de_switch_tonic_for_tracy_pl3w2FTGBzk2tAtdYQ6TAP)

Excerpt: "Adrian Tracy was a defensive end in college at William & Mary, but when the Giants made him a sixth-round pick in 2010, they instantly converted him to a linebacker.

“ ‘See ball, get ball’ is what I was used to when I was in college,’’ Tracy said yesterday. “But at linebacker you’re responsible for a lot more than just that.’’

The new position never worked out for Tracy. He hurt his elbow and spent his rookie year on injured reserve. He didn’t show much development last summer at linebacker and spent the 2011 season on the practice squad. This spring, he was told he would be moving to defensive end, and that has made all the difference for him." Read more...

CRUZ CALLS OUT REPLACEMENT REFS (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/cruz_calls_out_refs_phDDay0XGOc34EBvg0iElI)

Excerpt: "Victor Cruz was on the field with the rest of his Giants teammates Friday night when the replacement officials certainly didn’t distinguish themselves during the 32-31 preseason loss to the Jaguars. Cruz admits he’s concerned about the safety and integrity of the game if these replacement officials work games in the regular season." Read more...

Excerpt: "Tom Coughlin stomped around acting like a robot.

It happened on Sunday afternoon after practice, when he was discussing new tight end Martellus Bennett, who has displayed a colorful personality. Coughlin was told that Bennett “seems like an interesting guy’’ and was asked what he’s like to coach.

“He’s an interesting guy,’’ Coughlin said."

GIANTS' BACKUPS SEEKING BIGGER ROLES (http://www.northjersey.com/sports/165943546_Giants_backups_seeking_bigger_role.html)

Excerpt: " Neither tight end Martellus Bennett nor running back D.J. Ware ever have established themselves as anything more than reliable backups in the NFL.

They may never have a better opportunity to showcase their talents than this season with the Giants.
"I came in with the mind frame that this is going to be my year," Ware said Sunday as the Giants resumed training camp at SUNY-Albany following a 32-31 loss at Jacksonville on Friday night in their preseason opener in which both he and Bennett reached the end zone.

Ware, 27, entering his fifth season with the Giants, could be the third-down back in a rushing tandem with Ahmad Bradshaw and first-rounder David Wilson. Bennett, 25, he of the outsized personality, signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal after four seasons behind Jason Witten with the Cowboys.
And through one preseason game – the Giants face the host Jets on Saturday at MetLife Stadium – quarterback Eli Manning likes what he sees.

Bennett caught three passes for 27 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown from David Carr. Ware rushed five times for 30 yards, including a 2-yard score and a 16-yard gain.
"I thought running, we had a couple of big runs, and that’s what we missed in the past, those 10-, 12-, 15-yard runs," Manning said." Read more...

GIANTS' KIDD GLOVES COME OFF FOR DEVELOPING CORNERBACK (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/13/sports/football/giants-prince-amukamara-is-next-in-line-for-starts-at-cornerback.html?_r=1&ref=football)

Excerpt: "The second-year Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara sometimes wears d***ling white football gloves, shiny and sleek, as if his hands were dipped in ivory.

They add an aura befitting a man of royal Nigerian descent who is named for his place in the family’s hierarchy, and who was the team’s first-round draft pick in 2011.The Giants have made it clear that now is the time for Amukamara to live up to that billing.Amukamara, who started alongside Corey Webster in Friday’s preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, is a name that has continually resurfaced throughout training camp. An accompanying word is often “development.” Has he made progress?

The Giants seem to be willing to give Amukamara the benefit of the doubt, accepting that his tumultuous rookie season was the consequence of an untimely injury and an unfair burden of catch-up.But with Terrell Thomas out indefinitely with an injured anterior cruciate ligament, and Aaron Ross now in Jacksonville, there is again an opportunity for Amukamara to assume a starting cornerback position, and the Giants are not handling him as delicately anymore.“My job is just to build the players’ trust,” Amukamara said. “So they can have the trust in me that they had with Terrell. I have to build their trust. I can do that by making plays.” Read more...

GIANTS'; HEAD COACH TOM COUGHLIN SINGS HIGH PRAISES FOR LINEBACKER SPENCER PAYSINGER (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/13/new-york-giants-head-coach-tom-coughlin-sings-high-praises-for-lb-spencer-paysinger/)

Excerpt: "Last offseason, Spencer Paysinger (http://www.giants101.com/tag/spencer-paysinger/) showed up to New York Giants training camp (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants-training-camp/) as an undrafted rookie linebacker out of Oregon with a very limited opportunity to prove himself worthy of making the roster. With Jacquian Williams, Greg Jones (http://www.giants101.com/tag/greg-jones/) and Mark Herzlich (http://www.giants101.com/tag/mark-herzlich/) all attempting to make the team as well, it seemed as if Paysinger was just going to be an extra body for training camp. Surprisingly, however, he proved himself as a standout special teams player in preseason action, and earned himself a spot on the 53-man roster." Read more...

GIANTS' VICTOR CRUZ CONCERNED ABOUT REPLACEMENT OFFICIALS (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/13/new-york-giants-wr-victor-cruz-concerned-about-replacement-officials/)

Excerpt: "As the labor dispute between the NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/) and National Football (http://www.giants101.com/tag/football/) League Referees Association continues to progress into the preseason, many inexperienced replacement referees have been exposed while officiating their first professional contests. This was evident on Friday night in Jacksonville (http://www.giants101.com/tag/jacksonville/), when several missed calls clearly detracted from the integrity of the game. It started when a blatant pass interference on New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Giants wide receiverJerrel Jernigan (http://www.giants101.com/tag/jerrel-jernigan/) went unnoticed, and continued as the game progressed." GIANTS' ANTREL ROLLE LPLAYER PORTINS OF LAST SEASON WITH TWO TORN ROTATOR CUFFS (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/13/new-york-giants-antrel-rolle-played-portion-of-2011-season-with-two-torn-rotator-cuffs/)

Excerpt: "Antrel Rolle (http://www.giants101.com/tag/antrel-rolle/) is loud, opinionated and sometimes controversial. The New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/)Giants safety is also a talented, devoted team player … and one tough SOB.

Rolle revealed to the New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Post on Sunday that he had played a portion of the 2011 season, playoffs included, with not one, but two torn rotator cuffs (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/rather_just_eat_the_pain_Nl0zy7SZQqLQiYfPNmI8FI?ut m_medium=rss&utm_content=Giants&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter). GIANTS' AMUKAMARA READY TO MOVE ON FROM BAD GAME IN JACKSONVILLE (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/13/new-york-giants-prince-amukamara-ready-to-move-on-from-bad-game-in-jacksonville/)

Excerpt: "New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) cornerback Prince Amukamara (http://www.giants101.com/tag/prince-amukamara/) had a tough first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, blowing his coverage assignment twice in the same drive, allowing a 29-yard reception on third down, and later allowed a fade pass in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown.

Amukamara managed to put those plays behind him with some help from his teammates who offered him some advice on the sidelines.
"Right before that, Corey [Webster] and the other DBs just said, 'Forget about it — short-term memory, short-term memory.' And that's what I did," Amukamara said. "It's great to start to develop that, especially in the NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/) because there are going to be ups and downs. How you answer them is what matters." Read more...

RYAN PERRILLOUX: GIANTS' NO.E QB FOCUSED ON GETTING BETTER (http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/8/13/3237816/ryan-perrilloux-new-york-giants-training-camp-eli-manning-david-carr)

Excerpt: "Ryan Perrilloux, the New York Giants' No. 3 quarterback, very nearly led the Giants into position for a game-winning field goal attempt in the closing seconds Friday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With better work from his offensive line, Perrilloux might have been able to do just that.

Perrilloux completed 6-of-7 passes against Jacksonville for 59 yards and a touchdown.
"I felt good about the game," Perrilloux said. "I felt great. The game definitely has gotten slower to me. As long as I continue to master this offense and continue to improve it'll continue to slow down." Read more...

THE DAY AT CAMP: AUGUST 13, 2012 (http://insidefootball.com/blog/archives/4915)

Excerpt: "Ah, Jets week. My favorite time of the football calendar.

Well not really. I have long thought that there’s too much made of the annual preseason game between the co-tenants of MetLife Stadium, and I’ve never really bought into the “bragging rights” concept for the simple reason that bragging rights should go to whoever finishes with the better won-loss record.I mean, it’s pre-season, and as I wrote last week in my game preview, preseason isn’t about wins and losses.

It’s about evaluating players. It’s a chance to start handicapping the roster as guys who don’t get on the field during the second and third preseason games are probably going to be among those who don’t make the final roster (the first cut down date is Aug., 28, when rosters must be trimmed from 90 to 75, in case you’re wondering." KEITH RIVERS RETURNS TO THE LAND OF THE FOOTBALL LIVING (http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/15850/keith-rivers-returns-to-land-of-the-football-living)

Rivers, who played all three of his previous seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, missed last year with a wrist injury. He thought he would be more nervous than he was Friday.
