GIANTS' CHRIS CANTY SAYS HIS SURGICALLY REPAIRED KNEE IS BETTER THAN IT WAS LATE LAST SEASON (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_chris_canty_says_surgic.html)

Excerpt: "Chris Canty thought he'd be back by the first week of camp, and he certainly didn't think he'd still be sidelined on the last day.
That's exactly how it went, however, for the Giants' starting defensive tackle following major knee surgery. And with the Week 1 matchup with his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, three weeks and a day away, it's still very much unclear if Canty will be ready to go." Read more...

GIANTS' TOM COUGHLIN LAMENTS "SAD" END TO SHAUN ROGERS' SEASON (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_tom_coughlin_laments_sa.html)

Excerpt: "As soon as the words “blood clot” are mentioned with a player, it usually means at least a few months of recovery.

Such is the case with Shaun Rogers. The Giants (http://www.nj.com/giants)’ defensive tackle is out for the season with a blood clot in his calf (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_shaun_rogers_out_with_b.html), Tom Coughlin confirmed this afternoon after practice.
“It’s very sad because do you know the real story?” Coughlin asked.
Well, sort of. Rogers wouldn’t providethe full details on his weight loss (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/veteran_linebacker_keith_river.html).“He lost 50 pounds,” Coughlin said. “He went from, like, high 380s to 334 to check in at. He was really excited to be a part of this team, he got along really well with our defensive linemen. He actually asked to go play some more snaps the other night (in Jacksonville against the Jaguars), which I thought was really neat." Read more...

GIANTS SIGN DEFENSIVE TACKLE CARLTON POWELL (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_sign_defensive_tackle_c.html)

Excerpt: "Today was a rough day for the Giants' defensive tackle corps and Tom Coughlin indicated that the team was looking to add a body. It appears as though they did this evening.
The Giants have signed defensive tackle Carlton Powell, according to a tweet from his agent Jason Bernstein (https://twitter.com/JB_XAM/status/235510513348538368).Powell, a 2008 fifth-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos out of Virginia Tech, ruptured his Achilles tendon during the offseason before the start of his rookie year and was waived without playing a game." Excerpt: "Although New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) quarterback Eli Manning (http://www.giants101.com/tag/eli-manning/) has been criticized in the past for his lack of emotion on the field, nobody could ever question his attitude off of it. GIANTS' MARKUS KUHN TAKING ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER RIBBING FROM HIS TEAMMATES IN SRIDE (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_markus_kuhn_takes_arnol.html)

Excerpt: "Markus Kuhn is German. Arnold Schwarzenegger is Austrian.
Doesn't matter. To his teammates, Kuhn is "The Terminator," and they've been doing the "Ahnold" accent to playfully mock him (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_osi_umenyiora_makes_imp.html) for a while now."Yeah, well, we speak the same language," the Giants (http://www.nj.com/giants)' rookie defensive tackle said today of Germans and Austrians. "The funny thing (Monday) I was with Mark Herzlich at dinner and I just dropped my plate off (at the table) but I told them, 'I'll be back.'"I didn't even realize that I said it and they all started cracking up laughing and I was like, 'Wow, that wasn't even on purpose.' So that was kind of funny." Read more...

GIANTS' PLAYERS BELIEVE THE STIFF DORM ROOM BEDS ARE CONTRIBUTING TO BACK INJURIES (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_players_believe_stiff_d.html)

Excerpt: "In the battle against a recent epidemic of back injuries, the Giants (http://www.nj.com/giants) are going to the mattresses.

Okay, so I just wanted to get in aGodfather reference. But seriously, there’s been chatter up here the dorm-room beds at UAlbany are an issue for a bunch of overgrown NFL players." Read more...

GIANTS' SHAUN ROGERS OUT WITH BLOOD CLOT IN LEG (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_shaun_rogers_out_with_b.html)

Excerpt: "The Giants (http://www.nj.com/giants) put in a claim on Monday for former Bears defensive tackle Ronnie Cameron, as Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune was first to report (https://twitter.com/BradBiggs/status/235178765033021440).

As one of four teams to try nabbing Cameron, the Super Bowl champs were easily nudged out of the way. Cameron was awarded to the Cleveland Browns.
Eh, no worries, right? The Giants have plenty of depth, correct?Wrong. The team revealed today three of their defensive tackles are dealing with health issues, including veteran Shaun Rogers, who is being treated for a blood clot in his leg. As Stacy Andrews' blood clot last year showed (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/former_giants_lineman_stacy_an.html), Rogers will likely be sidelined for a few months at least." GIANTS' PRINCE AMUKAMARA, RAMSES BARDEN TRADE BIG PLAYS IN PRACTICE (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_prince_amukamara_ramses.html)

Excerpt: "Tom Coughlin has his 2012 slogan for the Giants (http://www.nj.com/giants): Build the Bridge.
“It took a while to get to that one,” Coughlin said after today’s practice, the 13th of training camp. “But we got there.”The slogan was unveiled in a press release of sorts from the team that explained “the slogan conveys the Giants’ desire to take the outstanding performances at the end of the 2011 season and bridge them to the upcoming 2012 season.”Hence the construction of that bridge.“I understand I had to explain it. A lot of you guys didn’t get it,” Coughlin quipped to the media. “That’s, uh, that’s a problem.” Read more...

OSI UMENYIORA, JUSTIN TUCK RESPOND TO CONTINUED "SOUR GRAPES" SHORTS AT GIANTS' SUPER BOWL WIN (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/osi_umenyiora_justin_tuck_resp.html)

Excerpt: "It began as a low rumble, with a few players talking about the notion around the league the Giants were lucky all the way to Super Bowl XLVI. Given how such sentiments are often imagined by players, it was a minor theme early in camp.

Then, last week, Packers linebacker Clay Matthews said “(the Giants) didn’t beat us (in the playoffs); we beat ourselves,” and there was the expected return of serve from here in Albany.
Finally, late last week, 49ers safety Donte Whitner said the Saints and Packers “were the two best teams in the playoffs and once they went down we felt like it was ours to lose, and we let it slip through our fingers.”Well, there’s the evidence. And here comes the latest backhand volley in reply." Read more...

TUCK, GIANTS NOT WILD ABOUT JETS' 'CAT (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/ny-giants-wild-jets-cat-article-1.1135772)

Excerpt: "The Jets think they have a secret weapon in Tim Tebow. The Giants just aren’t sure how big a weapon he’ll really be.

So while Rex Ryan took pains to keep his first Wildcat practice a secret Monday, the Giants didn’t see why the scheme was such a big deal. The first-team defense isn’t expecting to see much of Tebow or the Wildcat in the exhibition against the Jets on Saturday night anyway.

And the players didn’t sound like they’d be worried about him even if this game were real.

“You definitely have to prepare for (Tebow) because he’s a dynamic player,” Giant defensive end Justin Tuck said. “But there ain’t too many things you can do out of the Wildcat. It’s pretty simple when you think about it.” Read more...

WEATHERFORD: BEATING THE JETS "PRETTY SWEET" (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2012/08/weatherford-beating-jets-is-pretty-sweet)

Excerpt: "Saturday's Giants-Jets clash isn't a battle with an NFC East rival, and it's not even a regular season game. Heck, it's not even the third game of the preseason, the game that often sees the starters play most heavily.
But it's not meaningless. Some of the Giants say that Big Blue's true rivals are the other teams in the NFC East. And all the Giants say they're working to clean up their own flaws before the games actually count. But as punter Steve Weatherford puts it, beating the Jets is still "pretty sweet."
"Maybe that's because I used to wear that other jersey," said Weatherford, a former Jet. "They (the Jets) share the city with us. And when you have bragging rights in your own city - especially in New York City - that's a pretty big deal." Read more...
NICKS TAKEN OFF PUP LIST, READY TOP RETURN TO PRACTICE (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2012/08/nicks-taken-off-pup-list-ready-to-return-to-practice)

Excerpt: "Hakeem Nicks took a big step towards playing in the regular-season opener when he passed his physical on Monday and was removed from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Nicks, the Giants’ No. 1 receiver, had been there all summer thanks to a broken bone in his foot that he suffered in a practice on May 24. He had surgery the next day to have a screw put in the broken bone and was expected to be out 12 weeks.

Now, 11 weeks and four days later, Nicks is expected to practice with the Giants on Tuesday in their final practice of training camp at the University at Albany. Nicks will be “limited” during his first three practices, but that couldn’t dampen his enthusiasm for getting back on the field." Read more...

GIANTS' ROGERS OUT FOR SEASON WITH BLOOD CLOT (http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/giantsblog/giants_rogers_blood_clot_latest_jZAiid8nakVWDYdsmi 4LfM)

Excerpt: "Every summer, one position experiences a rash of injuries, severely depleting the roster, even a roster expanded to 90 players. This summer, it’s the defensive line, specifically defensive tackle, that’s been hit hard.
It was revealed on Tuesday that Shaun Rogers, the veteran signed this offseason to add experience and bulk to the interior of the line, is being treated for a blood clot in his lower leg and is out for the season.
"Obviously it’s your health first, there isn’t any question about that,'' coach Tom Coughlin said. "The only way I guess they can control these things is with these blood-thinning drugs and once you do that you’re done. You can’t take a chance on some kind of bleeding that is undetected. It’s just a sad thing.''

GIANTS' WARE FILLING THIRD-DOWN NICHE (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/ware_there_xAC7YuYcaOIrLPFoC68KbK)

Excerpt: "When discussing the play of running back D.J. Ware in the Giants’ preseason opener last Friday, coach Tom Coughlin made note of “a couple of very, very nice decisions with the ball’’ and Ware “ran hard, ran powerful.’’ Coughlin, though, saved his most interesting observation for last.

“He has a very good attitude,’’ Coughlin said. “I kind of like what I see.’’

There’s a bit of a different air to Ware this summer, his sixth with the Giants. As usual, there are backs lined up in front of him but this time, one of them, David Wilson, is a first-round draft pick, a steep hill to climb over. One of these years, Ware is not going to be able to survive a training camp battle, but based on what he has put on display thus far, this is not the year." Read more...

ELI MANNING GRASPING GISTS OF FATHERHOOD (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/dad_skills_fLi2MM9q82zPX34J0cqgKI)

Excerpt: "Eli Manning doesn’t look over his shoulder and see Tim Tebow, or have to hear the deafening sounds of Tebowmania follow him everywhere. Nobody thinks it’s a good idea to take him off the field for any Wildcat. He is the King of New York, the two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback of the New York Football Giants, the King of Kings on the Kings of New York, and no one bothers asking him anymore if he is an elite quarterback.

This was the question yesterday for Eli Manning:

“Do you think you’re an elite dad?”

He smiles and says: “I think I’m an elite dad, yes. I think so.” Read more...

U. AT ALBANY HOPES INDOOR FACILITY WILL PLACATE GIANTS (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/at_albany_hopes_indoor_field_will_x2hXDXPQTxSLDAER QtXzdM)

Excerpt: "The University at Albany badly wants the Giants to return in 2013 for a 17th summer holding training camp at the school. How badly? The university is willing to reconfigure its on-campus athletic bubble in order to solve the only issue the Giants have with the facilities.

“We don’t have the resources to build a facility,’’ University at Albany president George M. Philip told The Post yesterday, “but if we can have something with adaptive reuse, that would be good.’’

At present, there is no indoor field for the Giants to use in inclement weather and missing even a single practice is unacceptable to coach Tom Coughlin, given the pared-down camp schedule in accordance with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. This summer, the Giants are scheduled for 15 practices and rain and the threat of lightning once forced them to curtail practice halfway through. The only alternative for the Giants is to run a walk-through wearing sneakers on three side-by-side indoor basketball courts, not an option that suits Coughlin." Read more...

GIANTS INSIST FACING JETS IS NOT A BIG DEAL (http://www.northjersey.com/sports/166075256_Giants_insist_facing_Jets_not_a_big_deal .html)

Excerpt: "The conversation kept steering toward the Jets and that was a direction Justin Tuck didn’t want to travel.
Especially since the defensive end doesn’t even consider them a rival of his Giants.
"That’s what we’re doing this session?" Tuck said Monday at the University at Albany. "The last time I checked, I play for the Giants and I’ve only heard one question about the Giants. I really don’t want to talk about the Jets."

The teams play Saturday night at MetLife Stadium – the Giants are technically the visitors – in the second preseason game for each. The last time they played, the Giants sparked a Super Bowl run with a 29-14 win in Week 16 thanks to Victor Cruz’s 99-yard touchdown catch.

Coach Tom Coughlin referenced that win Monday as he discussed the slogan he’s come up with for 2012 – "Build the Bridge." Coughlin explained it by saying the Giants need to carry over what they did in their final two regular-season games and their remarkable four-game postseason run into this season." Read more...

TIGHT END MEANS BUSINESS AS HE LIGHTENS THE MOOD FOR GIANTS (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/14/sports/football/martellus-bennett-lightens-mood-for-giants.html?_r=1&ref=football)

Excerpt: "The tall, bearded man was smiling, joking, laughing. He is new to the Giants and their all-business coach, which makes his demeanor different from most of his teammates’. He could be the Giants’ starting tight end. And he has become one of their most talkative players.

Throughout training camp, Martellus Bennett has not disappointed anyone. He has impressed teammates and Coach Tom Coughlin and shown his personality in a number of ways.
Before practice Monday, Bennett joked with fans hoping to get an autograph. Later, the large crowd cheered every time Eli Manning completed a pass to him." Read more...

OSI UMENYIORA ON 2011 SORE LOSERS: "WE PUNCHED THEM IN THE MOUTH" (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/14/new-york-giants-osi-umenyiora-on-2011-sore-losers-we-punched-them-in-the-mouth/)

Excerpt: "Back in mid-June, Green Bay Packers (http://www.giants101.com/tag/green-bay-packers/) head coach Mike McCarthy, still not over a 37-20 playoff loss to the New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Giants, claimed his team didn't give themselves a chance to win (http://www.giants101.com/2012/06/15/green-bay-packers-mike-mccarthy-not-over-playoff-loss-to-new-york-giants/). He went as far as to say "you'd rather have a team beat you" than to beat yourselves. It's an opinion that was shared by linebacker Clay Matthews (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/08/green-bay-packers-clay-matthews-giants-didnt-beat-us-in-the-playoffs-we-beat-ourselves/) earlier this month, who also believed the Giants had nothing to do with the 17 point victory in Green Bay.

The trend of disrespect towards the Super Bowl champions continued late last week when San Francisco (http://www.giants101.com/tag/san-francisco/) 49ers safety Dante Whitner said his team let victory slip right through their fingers (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/11/san-francisco-49ers-donte-whitner-on-2011-nfc-title-game-it-was-ours-to-lose/). Excerpt: "The New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) released a medical report on Tuesday morning for four of their defensive lineman, and the news was terrible across the board. First and foremost, defensive tackle Martin Parker will miss the entire 2012 season with a herniated disk that requires surgery, while defensive end Justin Trattou is out several more weeks with a heel injury." GIANTS'; HEAD COACH TOM COUGHLIN SINGS HIGH PRAISES FOR LINEBACKER SPENCER PAYSINGER (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/13/new-york-giants-head-coach-tom-coughlin-sings-high-praises-for-lb-spencer-paysinger/)

Excerpt: "Last offseason, Spencer Paysinger (http://www.giants101.com/tag/spencer-paysinger/) showed up to New York Giants training camp (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants-training-camp/) as an undrafted rookie linebacker out of Oregon with a very limited opportunity to prove himself worthy of making the roster. With Jacquian Williams, Greg Jones (http://www.giants101.com/tag/greg-jones/) and Mark Herzlich (http://www.giants101.com/tag/mark-herzlich/) all attempting to make the team as well, it seemed as if Paysinger was just going to be an extra body for training camp. THE DAY AT CAMP: AUGUST 14, 2012 (http://insidefootball.com/blog/archives/4935)

Excerpt: "As far as the headlines go, the Giants’ bed problems have nothing on the Jets’ Wild Cat practices.

While Gang Green, the Giants’ next preseason opponent, was busy generating interest after trotting out its Tim Tebow-led Wild Cat package (which everyone knew was coming, and which most people probably could have predicted would be broken out this week, behind closed doors with the Jets beat writers restricted about what they could report), the Giants have one-upped their MetLife Stadium neighbors in the headlines, albeit not in a good way." THE DAY AT CAMP: AUGUST 13, 2012 (http://insidefootball.com/blog/archives/4928)

Excerpt: "In what has become an annual tradition at Giants camp, head coach Tom Coughlinunveiled the 2012 battle cry to his players.

“Build the bridge.”

Yeah, that’s what I initially thought when I learned about it. I tweeted that if you have to sit and explain it for an hour as Coughlin said he had to do with his players before they got it, that’s like needing to explain the punch line of a joke.

But the reality is that the slogan is very appropriate for where the Giants are at right now. Simply put, Coughlin is looking to inspire his team to be the group that finished their final six games on a strong note than the group that was up and down for the first 14 games. He’s looking for them to “bridge” that performance at the end of last year into this year." Read more...
