GIANTS' WILL BEATTY "BACK ON SHELF" WITH BACK ISSUE (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_will_beatty_back_on_the.html)

Excerpt: "Will Beatty slept in his own bed the past two nights. Let's get that out of the way right off the bat.
Regardless, the Giants' left tackle did not practice today because of a continuing back issue that has had him in and out (though mostly out) of practice this spring and summer."He's back on the shelf," coach Tom Coughlin said after practice. "He's back in the training room."Asked about Beatty's availability for Saturday's game against the Jets, a clearly frustrated Coughlin replied, "I have no idea." Read more...

GIANTS' TOM COUGLIN NOT AS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT MARVIN AUSTIN'S BACK (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_tom_coughlin_not_as_opt.html)

Excerpt: "Marvin Austin told reporters this morning that his back injury was nothing more than a "little back ache" and that tests showed everything was "okay."
If that's the case, someone didn't tell Tom Coughlin.

After this afternoon's practice, Coughlin said doctors are "doing more tests" and "they're dealing with some issues" in Austin's back. Coughlin wouldn't elaborate." Read more...

GIANTS EXPECTED TO SIGN DEFENSIVE TACKLE ,MARCUS THOMAS (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_expected_to_sign_defens.html)

Excerpt: "The Giants (http://www.nj.com/giants) are expected to sign defensive tackle Marcus Thomas very shortly, according to someone informed of the progress of the free agent’s visit. The person, who requested anonymity because the deal isn’t done yet, said Thomas will be a Giant as long as he passes a physical.

The person said Thomas had a very good workout this morning and also impressed the team during his meetings.
“Thank god,” Thomas tweeted at 11:30 a.m. (https://twitter.com/MarcusThomas_79/status/236122753747533824), an hour after his workout was to begin." Read more...

GIANTS' MARVIN AUSTIN DOESN'T EXPECT BACK INJURY TO SIDELINE HIM LONG (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_marvin_austin_doesnt_ex.html)

Excerpt: "Marvin Austin won't blame his aching back on the mattress he slept on during in training camp up at UAlbany, but he admits it could've been better. It could've been worse, too, he said.

He blamed the back discomfort, which began during a walkthrough Monday, on a "multitude of things" including adapting to game speed against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Friday.
When word came that Austin had to go down to Manhattan to undergo tests in what became a tumultuous few days for the Giants defensive line, Tom Coughlin feared the worst. But tests revealed nothing major."I had a little back ache and we just wanted to make sure everything was okay," Austin said." Read more...

AHMAD BRADSHAW, BRANDON JACOBS BELIEVE GIANTS' DJ WARE IS READY FOR BREAK OUT SEASON (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/dj_ware_needs_to_gain_more_fie.html)

Excerpt: "D.J. Ware took the handoff, bounced to his left, cut right as he crossed the line of scrimmage, hopped to the left to juke a defender and then put two hands on the ball as he began to high-step into the Jaguars’ secondary.
Even though he had at least 2 yards between him and anyone in a teal jersey. After the Giants scored a touchdown on the next play, Ware headed back toward the sideline, where fellow running back Ahmad Bradshaw was pumping his legs in playful mockery of Ware’s running style." Read more...

GIANTS CLINT SINTIM APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN WAIVED (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_clint_sintim_appears_to.html)

Excerpt: "On Wednesday afternoon, Clint Sintim sent out an ominous-sounding tweet (https://twitter.com/ClintSintim52/status/235837308006436864).
"Change is inevitable....That's (a part) of life," the Giants (http://www.nj.com/giants)' linebacker wrote. "How a man responds to change ultimately defines his character...as always...#DontCountMeOut!"

Sintim is trying to come back from a second major knee injury in as many years after shredding his patella tendon (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2011/09/giants_vs_new_england_patriots.html) and anterior cruciate ligament one season after tearing his ACL (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2010/12/giants_lb_clint_sintim_tears_a.html). Though he's been telling his Twitter followers to not count him out for months now, it seems his time with the Giants could be up." Read more...

Excerpt: "Earlier in the week, the Giants waived undrafted rookie defensive Janzen Jackson, who Tom Coughlin said wasn't performing up to expectations.
They have now filled his spot with another undrafted rookie defensive back, Laron Scott. A cornerback also known for explosive return skills out of Georgia Southern, Scott tweeted the news last night. (https://twitter.com/laron_scott_34/status/235854938259980288)Competition at Georgia Southern, an FCS school, isn't top-notch, but the diminutive Scott performed against the best when given the opportunity, scoring on a 95-yard kickoff return against eventual BCS National Champion Alabama last season." GIANTS' SAFETY KENNY PHILLIPS WANTS TO BE CLOSER TO THE ACTION LIKE ED REED AND TROY PALAMALU (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/ny-giants-kenny-phillips-closer-action-article-1.1137329)

Excerpt: "He is a masterful deep safety, easily the best center fielder in a Giants uniform. And because of that, Kenny Phillips (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Kenny+Phillips+(Football)) never gets to show off his other gifts.

It’s an irony that’s not lost on the 25-year-old. Phillips, who is in the final year of his contract, is coming off a career season in which he picked off four passes, made 82 tackles and helped knock away that Hail Mary pass to Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski in the waning seconds of Super Bowl XLVI.

But he aspires for more, to move closer to the line of scrimmage like elite safeties Ed Reed of Baltimore and Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu do. He wants to influence the game more, even if his training-camp experience indicates he won’t get that chance." Read more...

GIANTS PART WAYS WITH FORMER SECOND ROUND PICK (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2012/08/giants-part-ways-with-former-second-round-pick)

Excerpt: "After three injury-plagued seasons in which he never quite lived up to the promise of a second-round draft pick, the Giants have apparently waived linebacker Clint Sintim.

The 26-year-old linebacker, who was trying to work his way back from his second torn ACL, is expected to be officially released sometime on Thursday. The Giants had no official comment on Sintim, though they are expected to announce a flurry of moves in the afternoon.

Sintim, who was drafted 45th overall by the Giants in 2009 out of Virginia, played in only 33 games for the Giants, mostly on special teams. He first tore his right ACL in December of 2010 and then did it again last August, when he was bent over backwards and tore both his ACL and his patella tendon in the Giants’ final preseason game." HENDRICKS HAS COUGHLIN'S EYE AND A SHOT (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2012/08/hendricks-has-coughlins-attention-and-a-shot)

Excerpt: "With 90 guys on the training camp roster it’s not easy for young players to get Tom Coughlin’s attention. Last Friday night in Jacksonville, Dwayne Hendricks definitely did.

The first-year defensive tackle, who spent most of last season on the Giants’ practice squad, had two sacks in the Giants’ preseason-opening loss to the Jaguars and he seemed to be having his way with Jacksonville guard D.J. Hall. It was exactly the kind of performance needed for a team suddenly besieged by injuries at that position." Read more...

PERSONAL TRAGEDIES TESTED JUSTIN TUCK IN 2011, BUT GIANTS' DEFENSIVE END SAID HE DIDN'T SERIOUSLY CONSIDER RETIREMENT (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/personal-tragedies-tested-justin-tuck-2011-ny-giants-defensive-retirement-article-1.1137044)

GIANTS CUT DISAPPOINTING SECOND ROUND PICK SINTIM (http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/giantsblog/giants_cut_former_second_round_pick_vR8z2JxQeVlSFB 79aNooyK)

Excerpt: "High draft status only keeps a player around for so long. Linebacker Clint Sintim, a second-round draft pick in 2009 who made no impact and battled numerous injuries, is no longer listed on the Giants’ official roster and has been cut by the team.

Sintim this summer was on the Physically Unable to Perform list and spent all of training camp rehabbing his knee. Sintim tore his anterior cruciate ligament in December of 2010, missing the end of that season, and suffered an injury to his ACL and patella tendon last preseason. It was a long road back for Sintim, 26, and the Giants couldn’t wait any longer." Read more...

GIANTS HOPE PRINCE CAN HANDLE THE JOB (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/giants_hope_prince_can_handle_job_Z2ySgqOTH4NFsuWM Mym9SP)

Excerpt: "He gets paid to play, not formulate the gameplan, but if safety Antrel Rolle was going to switch sides and attack the Giants defense he knows whom he’d target.

Prince Amukamara.

“As an offensive coordinator, that’s probably going to be the angle,’’ Rolle said. “He has to understand that, and I’m sure he’s aware of that. You have to continue to grow. You have to turn into a man overnight. There’s no time for babying, and he understands that. He’s going to be fine. Excerpt: "It is 7 a.m. and the telephone is ringing in Tom Coughlin’s office.

“Tom? Rex Ryan.”

“(Pauses) Uh, hello Rex. What can I do for you?”

Rex: “Ready for the Wildcat?”

Tom: “I’m worried about my team, to be honest with you, Rex. We’re trying to build a bridge.”

Rex: “Hey, speaking of bridges, I could probably walk across one now and not have it collapse (laugh out loud). Too bad Brandon Jacobs isn’t still with you, he wouldn’t be telling me, ‘Shut up, Fatboy,’ there’s no doubt (laugh out loud). Hey, how was training camp?”

JETS NOW GIVING SOME RESPECT TO CHAMPION GIANTS (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/changing_their_tune_jets_give_some_h6Kqg5RE5axjJ3T zebFyII)

Excerpt: "When the Giants and Patriots faced off in Super Bowl XLVI in February, you would have thought the Jets couldn’t bring themselves to root for either their fellow MetLife Stadium tenant or their division rival.

Not so, Bart Scott said Wednesday. In fact, the choice was easy for him.

“I was happy for [the Giants],” Scott said after practice. “You can best believe that I was rooting for them [to win] the Super Bowl and not the other one.

“I can guarantee you that one.”

The Jets and Giants will face off again Saturday in East Rutherford, their first time on the field together since the Giants walked away with a 29-14 victory over the Jets on Christmas Eve last December, a win that launched the Giants on their way to a second Super Bowl title in five years." GIANTS SEEKING HELP FROM LINEMAN (http://www.northjersey.com/sports/166369616_Giants_seeking_help_from_lineman_defense _from_German_import.html)

Excerpt: "In assessing this year’s draft, Jerry Reese essentially gave Markus Kuhn two possible nicknames for the veracity and effort with which he plays.

The first – "the Mitch Petrus of defensive tackles" – was humorous, although it failed to resonate the way Reese’s "JPP of tight ends" has followed rookie Adrien Robinson.
The second has stuck, making its way to Kuhn’s native Germany and back following this assessment from the Giants’ general manager: "He is a like a buzz saw in there." Read more...

GIANTS' TOP DRAFT PICK SHOWS GRIT ALONG WITH SPEED (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/16/sports/football/giants-top-draft-pick-david-wilson-is-eager-to-contribute.html?_r=1&ref=football)

Excerpt: "David Wilson jogged close to the sideline, his right hand gripping a ball. In that moment at Monday’s practice, Wilson could hear the fans just 10 feet away.

“Good run, David,” one woman yelled.

“Nice job showing off that speed,” a man shouted.

The applause for Wilson, a running back the Giants drafted in the first round this year, came after he bounced a run to the outside. The last defender was cornerback Brandon Bing. And in a friendly play within the play, Bing made Wilson get a little more exercise by sprinting to see if he could catch Wilson before he reached the end zone. Bing could not." Read more...

Chris Canty (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/3394/chris-canty)is still not available. A fourth new defensive tackle, former Denver Broncos (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/denver-broncos)lineman Marcus Thomas, was working out at the Timex Performance Center Thursday.

So, you can understand head coach Tom Coughlin's angst earlier this week when he was talking about defensive tackle Marvin Austin (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/130945/marvin-austin), who had to be sent to the Hospital For Special Surgery in Manhattan for tests on his back.
"I’m praying that when the phone call comes, it’s a good one," Coughlin said on Tuesday.
Turns out that it was a good one. Austin said today that he had just been "having a little backache" and that tests show he should be OK." Read more...

Scott, out of Georgia Southern, recorded a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Alabama last season. He had previously been with the Saints, who waived him on May 3.

It's funny, I live in Hookie Land where he played college ball. I can't tell you how many people come up to me (I'm one of those obvious GIANTS fans) and tell me we are going to cherish the day he was selected. They have me so stoked I've already bought his jersey.
