Okay, just trying to understand pre-season football a little better, so please bear with me...I heard from some people that teams who do bad in pre-season do well in regular season and vice versa. That there are teams with players hungry for a spot on the team so they try really hard and succeed in pre-season. I also ask because (dear god, I hope it's ok to say this here) the Jaguars have been on a good streak, but normally suck in regular season and am curious to know if this theory applies.

I know it's only pre-season and the games don't really count and blah, blah, blah...but I still want to understand the rationale behind it. So, is this true?

Don't listen to fools who generalize about anything.

LOL I am not sure that it is a rock solid hypothesis...but it does happen.......it is not 100%....there are good teams that play bad and bad teams that play good,..........also different teams have different goals in preseason....most do not use their entire game plan and most run a very vanilla style of plays

Some teams, especially those that don't have much of a history of championship, tend to take the preseason games a lot more seriously than the ones that often fail to make the playoffs. The Jags and Jets treated their preseason games with us like it was the Super Bowl for them. The Bears and Patriots will play more like us: simply making determinations as to individual performance for the purposes of forming the 53-man roster...

Also, as fansince69 said, teams will run very vanilla plays so that no film builds up on them before the first week of the regular season even starts. That's why it's very hard to go undefeated in the NFL. Teams will look at everything they can on their opponents to find their weaknesses and exploit those. It's how the Chiefs beat the packers last season.

I like the preseason because it gives us a chance to see the new guys and how they will do on our team.It is also a nice tease for the regular season.I bELIeve.

Coaches and the front office use preseason to evaluate talent and to build cohesiveness among their players. It is a chance to for players to get in football shape by taking hits and getting used to the speed of the NFL again. To alot of teams the records don't really matter as long as the team goes into the season relatively healthy and ready as a team. In the preseason most teams run vanilla offenses and defenses for two reasons...to not tip their hats and to get their players in the mindset of playing football again.

This is a great shirt.....from the Lions' 0-16 season, where they went 4-0 in the pre-season. But aside from this case that one might say supports your proposition, you can really glean nothing from the pre-season.

I compare our #1's against our opponents #1's, #2's, etc.

Other than that I don't put much stock in pre-season.
