NEWARK STAR LEDGER

GIANTS SIGN DT MARCUS THOMAS (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/08/giants_sign_veteran_defensive.html)

Excerpt: "After months of waiting for a call that just wouldn’t come, Marcus Thomas eventually told his agent not to ring his phone unless he was notifying him about a job opportunity.

That call came earlier this month. Thomas answered it. He did not say hello.

“Where am I going?” the veteran defensive tackle, who was training in Florida, immediately asked.

To East Rutherford, where the Giants were suddenly enduring a run of injury issues in the middle of their defensive line. Thomas arrived here last week, impressed the team in a workout, passed a physical and signed a one-year deal for the veteran-minimum salary of $700,000." Read more...

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS.

GIANTS WANT PRINCE TO PLAY LIKE ROYALTY (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/ny-giants-prince-amukamara-assert-article-1.1142398)

Excerpt: “There is an attitude needed to play cornerback in the NFL. It is a ****iness that the elite ones say is different than at most other positions. It cannot easily be taught, either.

“Some people have it,” Giants cornerback Corey Webster (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Corey+Webster)said. “Some people just have it.”

This summer, the Giants are trying to find out whether Prince Amukamara (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Prince+Amukamara)is one of those who has it, or not.

That question was certainly raised this week when video surfaced of teammate Jason Pierre-Paul tossing Amukamara into a tub of ice-cold water, something some of his teammates say has happened to him many times since last year. As he was being carried to the tub, someone could be heard on the video yelling, “You better stand up for yourself.” Read more…

DT THOMAS WAS FACING THE END OF HIS CAREER BEFORE THE GIANTS CALLED (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/dt_thomas_was_facing_end_of_career_nss3vNZrr5ldbdt P8vc1KM)

Excerpt: "He was in no mood for small-talk or any pleasantries, and so when Marcus Thomas saw he was receiving a call from his agent last week he cut right to the chase:

“Where am I going?’’ Thomas asked.

No, “Hello.” No, “How are you?” Nothing.

“At that point I was just working out, telling my agent don’t call my phone unless it’s for work,’’ Thomas said Wednesday. “It just came to that point, I had to block everything out. [Missing] the first preseason game, that’s when it really started to hit me, like it basically could be over with for me. So I just kept on going and hopefully something worked out.’’ Read more...

Excerpt: "Eli Manning has signed a multi-year agreement for a weekly appearance on WFAN with Mike Francesa.
Manning, a two-time Super Bowl MVP, was previously heard on a weekly spot on ESPN New York. WFAN is the flagship station of the Giants. Manning will be heard at 5:05 p.m. (subject to change) the day after Giants games throughout the season." Read more...

GIANTS WOES ARE NOTHING TO SNIFF AT (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/giants_woes_are_nothing_to_sniff_7WY1HDgpZHCuOvtI8 10AdM)

Excerpt: "No one is pulling his or her hair out inside the Timex Performance Center wondering whether Eli Manning can remember how to get his team in the end zone, or assuring the outside world the sky is not falling, everything will be just dandy once the real games begin.

Manning is still an elite quarterback last time we checked, and Giants coach Tom Coughlin already belongs in the Hall of Fame with him, Phil Simms has told us, and the Odd Couple of the Giants act as if they haven’t won a thing, which goes a long way towards nipping complacency in the bud." THE BERGEN RECORD

RANDLE CATCHING ON FOR GIANTS (http://www.northjersey.com/sports/167146675_Randle_catching_on_for_Giants.html)

Excerpt: " Hakeem Nicks was going to run sprints.

That meant Rueben Randle was going to run them, too.

So there Nicks and Randle went after practice Wednesday, two wide receivers for the Giants jogging at varying speeds from one side of the end zone to the other with the goal of building up their stamina for regular-season game days.

"Everything I do he wants to do," Nicks said. "Any time I do stuff like that, like running after practice, I pull him with me, talk football with him. I just try to show him some things because I know how it is being a rookie receiver coming in, not knowing what to expect. I want to help him out as much as I can."

Asked if second-round pick Randle is ready for more first-team reps, Nicks added: "I think he is. He's confident in himself. He's eager to get out on the field and make plays." Read more..

GIANTS' TERRELL THOMAS HOPING FOR MID-SEASON RETURN, MAY LAND ON IR? (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/23/new-york-giants-terrell-thomas-hoping-for-mid-season-return-may-land-on-ir/)

Excerpt: "After experiencing some swelling in his surgically repaired knee (http://www.giants101.com/2012/07/30/new-york-giants-confirm-cb-terrell-thomas-suffered-injury-to-right-knee-involving-the-acl/) early in training camp, New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) cornerback Terrell Thomas (http://www.giants101.com/tag/terrell-thomas/) was sent to see a series of specialists for their opinion on the extent of the damage. All Doctors concluded that Thomas had not re-torn his ACL and did not immediately need surgery. Head coach Tom Coughlin (http://www.giants101.com/tag/tom-coughlin/) called the situation the "best case scenario (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/06/new-york-giants-terrell-thomas-returning-to-camp-tom-coughlin-calls-it-best-case-scenario/)" and a 3-8 week timetable (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/08/new-york-giants-terrell-thomas-says-he-could-return-from-aggravated-acl-in-3-8-weeks/) was set for Thomas' return." GIANTS WANT PRINCE AMUKAMARA TO SHOW MORE "SWAG" (http://www.giants101.com/2012/08/23/new-york-giants-want-to-see-prince-amukamara-show-more-swag/)

Excerpt: "The word "swag" has a variety of meanings, none of which are pertinent to its usage here in 2012. Ultimately, the concept behind "swag" is exude confidence to a near egotistical level. For football (http://www.giants101.com/tag/football/) players, it also needs to translate to their play on the field, and that's exactly what the New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) want to see more of from second-year cornerback Prince Amukamara." CARL BANKS INTERVIEW, PART I: EXPECTATIONS FOR 2012, AND THE RUNNING GAME (http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/8/23/3261094/carl-banks-interview-part-1-new-york-giants-2012-expectations)

Excerpt: "[EDITOR'S NOTE: I talked to Giants radio analyst and former great outside linebacker Carl Banks at length on Wednesday. This is the first of a three-part series from our discussion.]

Are the 2012 New York Giants going to resemble the under-achieving team that went 7-7 through 14 games a season ago? Or, are they going to resemble the Super Bowl-winning team that won its final six games of the season en route to a championship?
That is the critical question with the Giants as the season approaches. Carl Banks thinks it could come down to a few simple factors."The Giants, if you take apples to apples, they have an opportunity to become a double-digit win team just by improving in a few categories. If they can increase their return yardage on both kicks and punts by three yards it automatically puts them up there in the top 15 teams in the league based on last year's numbers," Banks said." CARL BANKS INTERVIEW, PART II: TALKING ABOUT MIDDLE LINEBACKER (http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/8/23/3262787/carl-banks-interview-part-2-talking-about-middle-linebacker)

Excerpt: "You cannot talk to Carl Banks, one of the great outside linebackers in the history of the New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) franchise, without eventually getting around to the subject of linebackers. With the Giants these days, that means discussing the competition between veteran incumbent Chase Blackburn (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2207/chase-blackburn)and second-year man Mark Herzlich (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/131182/mark-herzlich).

The opinion has been espoused here at Big Blue View, by yours truly and others, that it is only a matter of time before the young, talented Herzlich takes the job away from Blackburn. Offered that rationale on Wednesday, Banks wouldn't bite." Read more...

Excerpt: "When the New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) suffered a rash of injuries at the defensive tackle position last week, they made a flurry of roster moves. The most interesting, and maybe the one that will pay the biggest dividends, was the signing of Marcus Thomas." Read more...

GAME PREVIEW: BEARS @ GIANTS (http://insidefootball.com/blog/archives/5006)

Excerpt: "Third pre-season game is the closest you’re going to get to regular-season speed. The starters will play into the third quarter before taking a seat. Winning the game is a minor objective. Fine-tuning your schemes is a priority but not as high as getting off the field unscathed. By this point most, of the grading has been done. It’s all about getting up to game speed now." CHECK OUT PRINCE AND THE EVOLUTION (http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/8297449/new-york-giants-prince-amukamara-shows-confidence)

Excerpt: "For the past couple of weeks, Justin Tuck (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8488/justin-tuck) has seen a different Prince Amukamara (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13975/prince-amukamara) from the one who struggled a bit as a first-round pick last season. The cornerback's confidence has been growing. Although the New York Giants (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyg/new-york-giants)' veterans would still like to see Amukamara develop more of a swagger and an edge, Tuck sees a cornerback becoming more confident with each week that passes."You would like to see him be a little bit more vocal, (with) a little bit more, as the young kids say, 'swag,'" Tuck said. "But I think Prince is doing a great job in doing well with what we're throwing at him. With T-2 (Terrell Thomas (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11297/terrell-thomas)) being out right now, a lot of the pressure is on him." Read more...

INJURY REPORT: HOSLEY SHOOTING FOR NEXT WEEK (http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/16148/injury-report-hosley-shooting-for-next-week)

Excerpt: "Jason Pierre-Paul was a surprising addition to the injury report when he missed today's practice with back spasms (http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/8293170/new-york-giants-de-jason-pierre-paul-unlikely-play-friday).

Tom Coughlin said JPP will likely sit out for precautionary reasons. S Will Hill was not at practice either, due to a death in the family, but he is expected to play against the Bears.

CB Jayron Hosley will miss the game with turf toe. He remains in a protective boot on his right foot but is hoping he can return to practice next week.

"Trying to work the soreness and stiffness out. It’s been going pretty good," Hosley said. "It is different. It is such a small thing that can cause a lot of problems but got to take it day by day to get it right." Read more...

DT THOMAS THANKFUL FOR SECOND CHANC3
(http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/16146/thomas)

Starting left tackle Will Beatty (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/12610/will-beatty) remains out with a sore back, starting linebacker Michael Boley (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8574/michael-boley) is sidelined with a bad hamstring, and starting defensive tackle Chris Canty (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8546/chris-canty) is still on the physically unable to perform list due to offseason knee surgery."
