View Full Version : OFFICIAL: Roster Trimmed to 75 Players

The Giants this morning pared 15 players from their roster to reach the NFL’s roster limit of 75 players.

Two veterans who had offseason knee surgery and have yet to practice this summer, defensive tackle Chris Canty (http://www.giants.com/team/roster/chris-canty/64461fb7-f15d-4e16-abf2-de519455967e/) and tight end Travis Beckum (http://www.giants.com/team/roster/travis-beckum/4e6ecc5a-b3e5-44be-a068-4f33691deec7/), were placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. They will miss at least the first six games of the season.

Offensive lineman Brandon Mosley (http://www.giants.com/team/roster/brandon-mosley/38084aae-48d7-4b90-8dab-505591669780/), the second of the Giants’ two fourth-round draft choices this year, was placed on season-ending injured reserve with an ankle injury.

The Giants terminated the contract of five-year veteran cornerback Antwaun Molden (http://www.giants.com/team/roster/antwaun-molden/9f5092f2-f572-46c9-9bfd-56e3f38ffca1/), whom they signed on April 16. Molden played for New England last year.

The team also waived 11 players, including three with NFL experience: tight end Ryan Purvis (http://www.giants.com/team/roster/ryan-purvis/271a2683-0ecb-4d90-a5ad-09a212fcdafc/), defensive tackle Carlton Powell (http://www.giants.com/team/roster/carlton-powell/05ceb986-8ebf-48f0-adfb-01f22348882e/) and defensive back Chris Horton (http://www.giants.com/team/roster/chris-horton/3465eb25-17d9-42e8-81e6-31c66c86cc13/). Anyone surprised that molden got out ? Our cb is pretty thin thought they would keep all the cbs they can

Could it possibly just be semantics? Did we pay Molden a workout bonus when he signed or something? That might explain the difference in language.

When a player is waived, they go onto the waiver wire where another team can claim them. If they are claimed, the contract they had with their prior team goes with them.

When a player is terminated, they are immediately a free agent and can negotiate a new contract with any team. More often, players are terminated after coming off of an injury or if they over 4 years of experience in the NFL (which Molden does and the rest don't).

Did you see what Nicks did to him in the SB? I cringed the day I heard the Giants brought him in...wasn't expecting much at all and really not surprised at all he didn't make the cut.

and what about bing.. we heard a lot of good things in training camp but didn't really see him out there in preseason.. as thin as we are in CB and remembering how much fewell praised him.. i would have thought he would have stuck around..

too bad for martinek too.. i liked the kid, but hynoski is the man..

This is a good example of how a player's versatility can create a need. On paper, we have one FB in Hynoski. In reality, however, we have two, the second being Pascoe who is also a tight end. If you have to make a coaching decision about a single player skill position and you have a player who can move from his roster position and provide credible service somewhere else.

I'm not.

He didn't impress me in New England and he didn't really do enough to make the team IMO. I was surprised that they got him during the off season.

I did not realize the severity of Mosley's ankle injury.

As for the other cuts, I am not tooo surprised. There will be some good position battles Wednesday night. The final cuts Friday will be a lot harder for Coughlin and the staff.

What exactly is the injury that Mosley sustained to his ankle?

I was a little surprised by Bing being cut this early . . . . thought that he would be one of the final cuts.

Isn't Bing hurt? My guess is that was the deal breaker with him. He hasn't really participated much and his injury probably is lingering.

Yes, Bing has a lower leg injury that has kept him out.

I can't really say I was surprised at any of these cuts; big surprises maybe trimming down to 53!Yeah the final cuts will be the tough ones---lots of depth and competition at certain positions.

Now with Canty sent to the PUP, I think the Giants will carry Joseph, Bernard, Austin and Hendricks/Kuhn/Thomas on the final 53. But I wonder what the status of Rogers will be--I wonder if he has a chance?

And since Sash's suspension was upheld, along with KP and Rolle, I think the Giants keep Hill and possibly Brown(unless Grant is in the fold?)

Hopefully Wednesday we will see some separation between Scott and Brown for possibly the 4th HB position, unless the Giants only carry 3.

At WR---it may comes down to Barden, Douglas, and Stanback for the final WR positions 5th and 6th. Assuming that Nicks, Cruz, Hixon and Jernigan are locks.

O-line. Lets hope Beatty stays healthy and can get some reps in Wednesday night vs the Pats. I think the Giants still will look at the waiver wire to see if there any options for OT.

At CB--assuming they hold a spot for Thomas and not IR him, I think the Giants carry 6. Webster, Cow, Prince, Thomas, Hosley and Tryon/Johnson/Hughes?
