NEWARK STAR LEDGER

GIANTS SHOWED, IN SEASON OPENER, GREAT DEPTH AT LINEBACKER
(http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/09/giants_showed_in_season_opener.html#incart_river)
Excerpt: "Among the bigger story lines in the Giants’ Super Bowl run last season were Antrel Rolle’s saving the defense by playing the nickel cornerback role and providing run support from that spot, as well as Deon Grant helping in a three-safety package.

It was noted and appreciated by the linebackers. Now, though, they’d like to be the ones carrying the defense.

“Up front, we’ve always held our own in the pass rush,” Mathias Kiwanuka said last week as he left the team’s facility one day after the loss to the Dallas Cowboys. “Antrel Rolle, Kenny Phillips and other guys have done a tremendous job at linebacker.

“It’s our time to step up and start contributing more.” Read more...

The stand-up tight end: Martellus Bennett adds big personality, athleticism to the NY Giants
(http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/stand-up-tight-martellus-bennett-adds-big-personality-athleticism-ny-giants-article-1.1155046)
Excerpt: "As Martellus Bennett 's shiny silver Bentley pulled into the players' parking lot at training camp his new stage was already set. He opened the door as a group of photographers clicked away, and the former Cowboy smiled as he stepped into a spotlight he had been waiting for all his life.

His first words were "I feel like Kim Kardashian." He later compared himself to Ghandi, right after he said "I'm kind of an a--hole. I kind of hate everybody." Weeks earlier, he had already dubbed himself "The Black Unicorn," "The Bearded Ghost" and said he's a lot like the character Will Smith played on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

He's so outgoing and engaging, teasing reporters, talking about how he's "courting" Eli Manning like a teenage boy woos a girlfriend, and constantly smiling, it's hard to believe that he thinks he's only now coming out of his shell.

"My wife calls me all the time saying ‘You look so happy out there,' Bennett says. "This is just who I am. Sometimes you try to change who you are to fit in and do things a certain way instead of just being yourself.

"That's one thing out here, everybody is just letting me be myself." Read more......

Giants' newcomer Rivers "helps" defense

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/rivers_rising_W6sqRc4LZgG6NglUJxaWAJ

Excerpt: "Keith Rivers knew he should be freeing himself of Jason Witten, should be discarding the Cowboys tight end as Witten was blocking for his running back, DeMarco Murray, on a draw play.

But Rivers couldn’t do it.“I probably should have just been able to get rid of Witten faster, I just saw [Murray] and reached out and grabbed him,’’ the new Giants linebacker said.

He grabbed him, all right. While his right arm was tangled up with Witten, Rivers reached out with his left and pile-drove Murray to the turf with the suddenness of one of those you-mean-it’s-all-fake wrestling takedowns. What made this play most significant to Rivers was which arm he used for which maneuver." Read more...

NY GIANTS' MARTELLUS BENNETT PROVES EFFECTIVE IN WEEK ONE

http://www.giants101.com/2012/09/09/new-york-giants-martellus-bennett-proves-effective-in-week-one/

Excerpt: "In a game that was built up to have Super Bowl (http://www.giants101.com/tag/super-bowl/) like implications, the New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Giants came up short in a week one loss to the Dallas Cowboys (http://www.giants101.com/tag/dallas-cowboys/) on Wednesday night. Needless to say, it was a disappointing effort by Big Blue and it raised a lot of questions that the team must answer going forward. However, it's not like this game was a blowout, by any stretch of the imagination." Read more...

Giants' Jerry Reese on Tom Coughlin: "I admire his passion to win"

http://www.giants101.com/2012/09/09/new-york-giants-gm-jerry-reese-on-tom-coughlin-i-admire-his-passion-to-win/

Excerpt: "Make no mistake about it, there are few people (if any) in the NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/) who want to win football (http://www.giants101.com/tag/football/) games more than New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) head coach Tom Coughlin. He treats each game as if it's the Super Bowl, and prepares his staff and players accordingly. To him, the most important game is the one being played." Read more...

INSIDE FOOTBALL

GIANTS SEE SILVER LINING IN OPENING WEEK RUN GAME WOES

http://insidefootball.com/blog/archives/5145

Excerpt: "When Giants head coach Tom Coughlin spoke about building the bridge from last year to this year, one thing he was hoping not to see his team continue to build on was its poor showing in the running game.

That wasn’t the case though in the season opener, as the final numbers of 19 carries for 82 yards didn’t exactly tell the story of how the team struggled to run the ball with any consistency, an occurrence that left Coughlin frustrated to find answers.

“At some point, somebody has to move somebody to create a hole to give us a chance to go through,” he said. “Once in a while, we would have a poor cut, but the majority of the time it was, ‘You have to win.’ When you’re one-on-one, you have to make something happen.” Read more...

Giants' OLine losing battle in trenches

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/16932/tk (http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/16932/tk)

Excerpt: "Chris Snee (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/5559/chris-snee) put it bluntly, when asked to assess the Giants' performance Wednesday night against the Cowboys.

"We got outplayed yesterday," Snee said Thursday. "I’m not proud to say that, but that’s what happened."

The Giants' starting right guard was talking about the entire team -- but he just as easily could have been talking about his unit in particular. The offensive line as a whole struggled to create running lanes -- as they did last season, when the Giants finished dead-last in the NFL in rushing, averaging just 89.2 yards per game.

Wednesday night, the Giants rushed for just 82 yards, on 19 carries. Their average yards per carry -- 4.3 -- wasn't bad. But when you take out Ahmad Bradshaw (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10693/ahmad-bradshaw)'s 33-yard scamper in the fourth quarter, Big Blue averaged just 2.7 yards per rush." Read more...

A closer look at Will Hill

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/16979/a-closer-look-at-will-hill

Excerpt: "Will Hill didn't even have his own number: He was No. 38B for the New York Giants.
His makeshift locker was one of dozens crammed into the middle of the team's oval-shaped locker room, part of a temporary settlement inhabited by football players waiting to get cut. Most of them spent training camp wearing some piece of their college gear, eyes glued to their phones, knowing that by Sept. 1 -- the date each NFL squad trimmed to a 53-man roster -- they would probably be on a plane back home, without a job." TEAM BY TEAM SALARY CAP SPACE AS OF 9/7/2012 (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/09/08/team-by-team-cap-space-as-of-september-7/)

Excerpt: "Once the regular season begins, the salary-cap calculation changes. Instead of factoring in the 51 highest-paid players, the in-season cap takes into account all 53 players, the practice squad, and players on reserve lists. Here's the league's official version of the list, as of Friday, September 7.]

Giants: $2.2 million." Read more...

GIANTS NOT WORRIED ABOUT WILSON'S EGO

http://www.profootballweekly.com/2012/09/09/giants-not-worried-about-wilsons-ego

Excerpt: "But we heard the Giants are not anywhere close to being worried about the rookie’s state of mind. They know he has to learn how to carry the football better — his technique was sloppy when Cowboys LB Sean Lee poked it out. They believe this is much more of a physical concern — getting him to change his grip — than a mental one." Read more...

I like the Will Hill article. He may be this year's undrafted diamond if he keeps his nose clean.
Thanks RF.

Despite Wednesday night's results, I still think we have what it takes to compete again.

Yeah. In spite of our poor play, we lost by only seven points. And there were a few encouraging signs out there. We're notorious for the slow starts anyway, so I for one am not about to throw in the towel. It's a long season, and we're dealing with that old injury bug that's got a few key guys out. We'll straighten it all out. Thanks as always, RF.............bring on Tampa Bay.

Bennett seems to be the real deal and I expect his contribution will only get better.
