Gianta - Panthers Gameday: Giants; linebackers will have their hands full with Cam Newton

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/09/giants-panthers_gameday_giants.html#incart_river

Excerpt: "Usually a quarterback’s marquee matchup is against the secondary. But against Cam Newton, the pressure is on the linebackers. Newton is a dangerous, perpetual threat with his legs both in designed quarterback runs and scrambles, particularly in the red zone. As a rookie last season, Newton rushed for 706 yards and his 14 touchdowns ranked second in the NFL. After accumulating four yards in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he had a career-high 71 yards and a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in Week 2. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said the Giants would assign a spy on Newton, which would most likely be a linebacker. The Giants possess some speed at linebacker — specifically Jacquian Williams and Keith Rivers, who is dealing with a hamstring injury. And they will need to play fast against Newton." Read more...

Giants' morning run: Redskins Josh Morgan receives death threats after costly penalty

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/09/giants_morning_run_redskins_jo.html#incart_river

Excerpt: "Yesterday, we used some of this space to highlight the $89 million the Panthers invested in their three-headed monster at running back of Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert. Well, the Giants may not need to worry about one of them. Stewart is listed as questionable with an ankle injury and head coach Ron Rivera said he will be a game-time decision (http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Injuries-can-really-hurt-on-short-week/3b2855c7-1ad7-4d0e-b9ae-47ea1a7824d7). Stewart missed the Panthers' opener against the Buccaneers and rushed for 51 yards on 11 carries against the Saints in Week 2. Right tackle Byron Bell (ankle) also is a game-time decision, while backup gurd Mitch Pollak has been ruled out.

Brandon LaFell arrived at training camp last year assuming the No. 2 wide receiver opposite Steve Smith was his. Instead, the Panthers surprisingly brought in Legedu Naanee. LaFell, then in his second year, took it as a message. By the end of the season he solidified himself as the No. 2 receiver and the spot is securely his this season, writes Ron Green Jr. of the Charlotte Observer (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/09/19/3541606/panthers-brandon-lafell-gets.html)." Giants' Hakeem Nicks now ruled out of Panthers game

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2...l#incart_river (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/09/giants_hakeem_nicks_now_ruled.html#incart_river)

Excerpt: "Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks, fresh off a 10-catch, 199-yard performance against the Buccaneers, will not play tomorrow night against the Panthers.

Nicks, who broke a bone in his right foot this offseason, was originally listed as questionable for the game but was later downgraded to out. He did not participate in this morning's jog-through and did not travel to North Carolina, according the team.

Both Nicks and coach Tom Coughlin said yesterday that Nicks would play this week. He did not practice yesterday, which Coughlin said was a planned rest day. Nicks has been playing through pain in his foot, and that pain was aggravated in Sunday's game, when Bucs safety Mark Barron accidentally stepped on his injured foot." Read more...

Giants' rookie Rueben Randle set to impress against Panthers with Hakeem Nicks out

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/ny-giants-randle-set-impress-article-1.1163370

Excerpt: "Rueben Randle (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Rueben+Randle) said he had a feeling this would happen.

Even before the Giants announced that they’d face the Carolina Panthers without two of their top wideouts, Randle had a hunch he’d find himself in a larger offensive role. The rookie could tell from his dramatic spike in practice reps on Tuesday, and when veteran Hakeem Nicks told him to “be ready.”

“I need to be prepared to play this game,” Randle said. “Hakeem told me to be ready to play this game.”

And Randle must be ready Thursday, because he’ll likely play a critical role. For the first two weeks of the season, Big Blue’s receiving corps were so deep that Randle, who was labeled by scouts as “NFL-ready” before April’s draft, barely saw the field." Read more...

Giants work around short week, injuries to prepare for Carolina Panthers

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/ny-giants-work-short-week-injuries-prepare-carolina-panthers-article-1.1163387

Excerpt: "When the Giants and Panthers meet Thursday it will be as close as the NFL gets to a doubleheader.

The physical and mental demands in a short time frame will make the game a torture test for the Giants, who are already banged up from their comeback victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday.

“I think you have to start with the mental part because Monday, for example, is a day when it’s an analytical day usually,” said Tom Coughlin. “It’s not an emotional day because you’ve just come through an emotional weekend, but you’re introducing the next opponent, so it’s a challenge.” Read more...

With Nicks out, Barden's time is now

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/gia...ns-time-is-now (http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/17405/analysis-with-nicks-out-bardens-time-is-now)

Excerpt: "The Giants downgraded Hakeem Nicks (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/12586/hakeem-nicks) to out in somewhat of a surprising move after he was listed as questionable earlier in the day.

But when Nicks didn't do much in the morning walk-through, the team opted to play it safe, keep him out of the game and give him two weeks of rest before next week's game against Philadelphia on Sept. 30.

This is the right move for the long term. Nicks still feels pain in his surgically-repaired right foot. He limped badly twice late during Sunday's win vs. Tampa Bay and the Giants won't risk their star receiver by having him play twice in five days. It doesn't sound as if he has had a major setback but we'll have to see how he is feeling next week. " Read more...

Nicks declared "out" for Thursday night

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/gia...thursday-night (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2012/09/nicks-declared-out-for-thursday-night)

Excerpt: "In a shocker, the Giants’ top receiver was downgraded to “out” on Wednesday and did not join the Giants on their trip to Carolina. He didn’t practice on Tuesday, but he and Tom Coughlin said it was just a planned day of rest, and Nicks insisted that his healing foot was just fine.

But then he was unable to participate in the team’s Wednesday morning walkthrough because his foot was still too sore. That prompted the Giants to decided he wasn’t healthy enough to play.

It is not immediately clear if Nicks suffered any set back to his right foot, which he broke during a practice back in May. Nicks played in the first two games and had a brilliant, 10-catch, 199-yard, 1-touchdown performance in the Giants’ 41-34 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday – a performance that made him the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week." Giants' Haleem Nicks forced out of Panther's game with sore foot

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/hurting_jints_invade_carolina_tonight_86ovltOjQhrS 0Z1HoWhkKM

Excerpt: "Coach Tom Coughlin won’t be blowing into a fife and Eli Manning won’t be banging a drum. But this will be a battered and wounded Giants outfit tonight, as they limp into Bank of America Stadium without four key offensive players, including — shockingly — stud receiver Hakeem Nicks.

The Giants already knew they would face the Panthers without running back Ahmad Bradshaw (neck), right tackle David Diehl (knee) and No. 3 receiver Domenik Hixon (concussion). They expected to have Nicks, who Wednesday was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for the devastation he wreaked on the Buccaneers (10 catches, career-high 199 yards, one touchdown)." Giants' rookies David Wilson, Rueben Randle need to make progress

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/giant_baby_steps_cyUDryFwkcZEqRIgZ4Ua3H

Excerpt: "The injection of talent the Giants anticipated producing immediate results hasn’t taken hold yet.
In the first two games, first-round draft pick David Wilson has five rushing attempts for 10 yards and one lost fumble. Second-rounder Rueben Randle is looking for his first NFL reception and was on the field for just three offensive snaps in Sunday’s 41-34 win over the Buccaneers.

They need to pick up the pace Thursday night when the Giants play the Panthers with Ahmad Bradshaw, Hakeem Nicks and Domenik Hixon all back home. The highly touted rookies can make their marks on special teams. Last week, Wilson had a 44-yard kickoff return and Randle had a 45-yard punt return called back by a penalty." Read more...

Giants' defense must step up tonighjt to help Eli Manning vs. Panthers

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/defense_must_step_up_game_to_help_efmVThYPrm869RYf Uf95PM

Excerpt: "What already loomed as a Giants-Against-the-World primetime showdown Thursday night has tilted heavily in favor of the world.

Hakeem Nicks (foot) Wednesday unexpectedly joined the conga line of Battered Blue that already included Ahmad Bradshaw, David Diehl and Domenik Hixon.

OK, Eli, let’s see what you can do for an encore now against the Panthers.

This isn’t about throwing again for 510 yards. It is about finding a way to win, somehow, some way. It is what elite quarterbacks do.
There has been little about the Giants — aside from Eli Manning-to-Nicks and Eli Manning-to Victor Cruz — that allows you to believe they are ready to remember how to be road warriors, or how to be champions." Read more...

Nicks ruled out for Giants vs. Panthers

Excerpt: "The Giants knew they would be short-handed on offense for Thursday night’s game against the Panthers. Now they know they will be decimated.

Receiver Hakeem Nicks, earlier in the day selected as the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after he wreaked havoc on the Buccaneers, did not accompany the Giants to Charlotte and has been ruled out of the game. This is a huge blow, and an unexpected one, for the Giants. Nicks has battled through ongoing soreness in his foot, a byproduct of breaking a bone in his right foot back in the spring. Despite the lack of practice time and the discomfort, Nicks managed to play in the first two games of the season and this past Sunday caught 10 passes for 199 yards and one touchdown." Read more...

Giants' matchup: Panthers

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/170457176_Giants_matchup__Panthers.html

Excerpt: "What’s at stakeGiants: As RG Chris Snee said after Sunday’s comeback victory over Tampa Bay, the Giants were "emotionally spent" — but at least they were on the right side of the outcome. Now the challenge is a short week with several key players banged up and not available to play, including WR Hakeem Nicks (foot), and on the offensive line where RT David Diehl (knee) is out. Sean Locklear will start at RT and Will Beatty should get his first start of the year at LT. With another nationally televised, prime-time showdown against the undefeated Eagles in 10 days, the Giants are going to need their most complete performance of the season in all three facets to beat the Panthers." Giants vs. Panthers: Guide to defending Cam Newton

http://www.giants101.com/2012/09/20/new-york-giants-vs-carolina-panthers-guide-to-defending-cam-newton/

Excerpt: "The New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Giants have played some suspect defense over their first two regular season games. Big Blue has given up a staggering 740 yards of total offense since the start of the season, including an average of almost seven yards per play. The pass rush has been ineffective, Corey Webster has been a disaster, and the Giants do not have a viable second cornerback to speak of. With that, the Carolina Panthers (http://www.giants101.com/tag/carolina-panthers/) are not going to make things any easier on the Big Blue tonight.

Cam Newton (http://www.giants101.com/tag/cam-newton/) presents a nightmare matchup for the Giants. He has the accuracy to make throws from the pocket, the arm strength to stretch the field, and the speed to avoid the pass rush. The Giants do not have a secondary that is capable of holding down receivers against mobile quarterbacks who can extend plays, so there is reason for concern the Big Blue's defense will not hold up tonight. However, while Cam Newton (http://www.giants101.com/tag/cam-newton/)'s fan club is constantly growing with each performance, he is very beatable. The Giants are an experienced defense with a Super Bowl ring in their back pocket, it's not like the team has no chance. Let's take a look at a few things the Giants must do to stop Cam Newton (http://www.giants101.com/tag/cam-newton/) and the Panthers in their tracks tonight." Read more...

Giants vs. Panthers: Insider report

http://www.giants101.com/2012/09/20/new-york-giants-vs-carolina-panthers-insider-report/

Excerpt: "In a little over a year in the NFL, Carolina Panthers (http://www.giants101.com/tag/carolina-panthers/) quarterback Cam Newton (http://www.giants101.com/tag/cam-newton/)has a highlight reel longer than most players acquire in their whole career. But as our New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) get ready to face off with him tonight, we realized we haven't had a chance to watch much Panthers football (http://www.giants101.com/tag/football/) lately, so we decided to reach out to our friends at Panthers101.com (http://www.panthers101.com/) for an inside take on Newton, Steve Smith (http://www.giants101.com/tag/steve-smith/) and DeAngelo Williams (http://www.giants101.com/tag/deangelo-williams/).

So tell us, is the Panthers offense all Cam all the time?
Despite Cam's explosive play-making ability, the Panthers are at their best when they are a run-first team. Consider this: Since the Cam Newton (http://www.giants101.com/tag/cam-newton/) era began last season, the Panthers hold an overall record of 7-11. In those 11 losses, Newton has thrown the ball an average of 36.8 times per game. In the seven wins, “Super Cam” has averaged just 23.6 pass attempts per game (and the Panthers held second-half leads in seven of those 11 losses, so the stat isn't skewed by the Panthers playing from behind)." Giants' Hakeem Nicks downgraded to out against Panthers

http://www.giants101.com/2012/09/19/...lina-panthers/ (http://www.giants101.com/2012/09/19/new-york-giants-hakeem-nicks-downgraded-to-out-against-carolina-panthers/)

Excerpt: "In a shocking and unexpected move, the New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) have downgraded wide receiver Hakeem Nicks (http://www.giants101.com/tag/hakeem-nicks/) to out against the Carolina (http://www.giants101.com/tag/carolina/) Panthers. He did not make the trip with the team.

Nicks, who hauled in 10 catches for 199 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, was confident he would be able to play on Thursday. Both he and head coach Tom Coughlin said that he hadsuffered no setbacks (http://www.giants101.com/2012/09/19/new-york-giants-hakeem-nicks-suffers-no-setbacks-will-play-thursday-against-carolina/), and that missing practice on Tuesday was his scheduled day off because of the short week." Giants' vs. Panthers, what to watch for

http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/9/20/3362874/giants-vs-panthers-what-to-watch-nfl-week-3-thursday-night-football

Excerpt: "The New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) (1-1) face the Carolina Panthers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/carolina-panthers) (1-1) in a difficult Thursday night road game for the defending super Bowl champions this evening. Here are a few things to watch for.
How the Giants defend Cam Newton: The Carolina quarterback is really unlike anyone else in the league, and the Panthers run an offense unlike any other because of it. They use shotgun all the time, and they utilize lots of read-option type running and designed quarterback runs. How will the Giants handle that? Will they have a 'spy' on Newton much of the time? The short week hurts the Giants' preparation. What helps the Giants, though, is the athleticism of their defensive ends and the fact that they have Michael Boley (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/1115/michael-boley), Keith Rivers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34370/keith-rivers) and Jacquain Williams -- linebackers who can run.The Giants' secondary: The problem here is the same one that has existed for the past several seasons, no matter who has been back there. When the pass rush doesn't get home the Giants are susceptible to the big play. The return of Prince Amukamara (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/130895/prince-amukamara) (high ankle sprain) might help, but he is admittedly less than 100 percent. Whether the Giants change their scheme or not, Corey Webster (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2266/corey-webster) has to play better than he has the past couple of weeks. However they do it, and whoever they do it with, the Giants have to cover better than they have the first two weeks." Read more...

Giants vs. Panthers: Preview

http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/9/20/3358324/giants-vs-buccaneers-preview-tv-schedule-kickoff-time-odds-and-more

Excerpt: "t seems like the New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) just got done playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/tampa-bay-buccaneers). Now, though, the Giants have to take the field again. Thursday night the Giants (1-1) are on the road to face the Carolina Panthers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/carolina-panthers) (1-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on NFL Network.

The game presents physical and emotional challenges for the Giants, the road team on a short week. It also presents the challenge of getting for quarterback Cam Newton and a Carolina offense that is hardly traditional by NFL standards.
Head coach Tom Coughlin referred to the short week as "a challenge." Typically, though, Coughlin wants to talk about that about as much as he wants to talk about Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano and kneel down plays."Quite frankly, as I always say, you don't worry about things that you don't have anything to do with. We play Thursday night and we're going, so the guys have done a pretty good job of it," Coughlin said. "You're hoping that some of your veterans can come around fast enough to get back into a full swing ... It's challenging, particularly for the people that played an awful lot of snaps and are sore or whatever and just getting back to their game." Read more...

Excerpt: "After coming off a dramatic 41-34 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/tampa-bay-buccaneers), the New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) (1-1) will play their first road game of the season against the Carolina Panthers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/carolina-panthers) (1-1) on Thursday night.

The Panthers are coming off a victory themselves, and a big one over theNew Orleans Saints (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-orleans-saints), 35-27. They have their star second-year quarterback Cam Newton and their star wide receiver Steve Smith doing damage on offense. The Panthers are weaker defensively, but they held up well against the Saints." Read more...

NY Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) at Carolina--I have a client who is a Niners fan. I told him how I couldn't believe how the Giants' passing offense now resembles that of those great Joe Montana Niners' teams and Air Coryell Chargers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/san-diego-chargers)' teams, and that it keeps them in any game despite the fact their defense can be a sieve. Well, look for another shootout tonight, with young Cam Newton losing to old man Eli. Giants 40, Panthers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/carolina-panthers) 37." Read more...

Panthers want Cam to run, just not too much

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...-much/related/ (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/09/19/panthers-want-cam-to-run-around-just-not-too-much/related/)

Excerpt: "The Panthers know they’re walking a fine line with Cam Newton (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/6491/cam-newton).

On one hand, the offense is clearly better when he moves around. On the other, that exposes him to hits they don’t want him taking.

For the moment, they’re OK with him with it in his hands, after he ran 13 times for 71 yards in last week’s win over the Saints. He was limited to five carries for four yards in the previous week’s loss to the Buccaneers.

“When he runs, it causes problems for defenses (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/09/19/3540202/cam-newton-carolina-panthers.html),” Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/2366/jordan-gross) said, via Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. “That 40-yard run he had shows you it’s not like he’s just a slow quarterback running. He’s a threat on the ground. He threw the ball well, too." Read more...
