Tom Coughlin's makeover as a coach detailed on "A Football Life"

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2...r_as_a_co.html (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/09/tom_coughlins_makeover_as_a_co.html)

Excerpt: "Tom Coughlin laughed when asked Friday if there were any "startling revelations" in his episode of NFL Network's "A Football Life," which will air Wednesday at 8 p.m.

The Giants coach said he didn't think so, although he hadn't yet seen the episode. He's right, but it is a warm, nostalgic and well-rounded look at the two-time Super Bowl winning head coach. Detailed in the episode is his endeavor to recast himself as a coach before the Giants' 2007 championship season.

Coughlin recalls a turning point after the 2006 season. He was on the hot seat after the Giants lost in the first round of the playoffs, and his wife, Judy, and two of his children staged an intervention in his living room. They told him what Judy Coughlin said she wished they had told him in Jacksonville, before he was fired as the Jaguars head coach -- that the media did not like him, and did not have reason to." A look back at the 36 - 7 win over the Panthers

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2...ants_36-7.html (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/09/a_look_back_at_the_giants_36-7.html)

Excerpt: "There are many reasons why the short-handed Giants blew out the Panthers on a short week on the road. The biggest? They are a good team with a great quarterback.

Tom Coughlin made a point of telling the media about Eli Manning’s “We have playmakers” speech to the offense (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/09/giants_dominate_carolina_in_36.html), delivered at the team hotel before the game. The coach credited Manning with “providing the confidence” for younger players to take advantage of opportunities when they come -- which Ramses Barden and Andre Brown no doubt did in Thursday’s 36-7 win.

Even down Ahmad Bradshaw, Hakeem Nicks and David Diehl, the Giants looked like a team with more answers -- on running the ball, starting fast, pressuring the opposing quarterback. There’s a far different vibe than during their last weekend off following the season-opening loss to the Cowboys, which players and coaches said kept them up at night.

“It’s a little easier to regroup,” a relaxed Coughlin said Friday. “What we have coming, we’re excited about that.”

Vacchiano: Giants' Reese wins with patience

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/fo...icle-1.1165605 (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/ny-giants-general-manager-jerry-reese-patience-lesser-known-players-pay-article-1.1165605)

Excerpt: "The angry mob is never far from Jerry Reese (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Jerry+Reese)’s door, no matter how many Super Bowl trophies are out in his lobby. If there’s one thing he’s learned in his 5 years as general manager of the Giants it’s that fans, by nature, are impatient. The last thing they ever want to have to do is wait.

So he understood the angst they felt on Thursday when injuries forced the Giants to start receiver Ramses Barden (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Ramses+Barden). Six months earlier, Reese could’ve kept Mario Manningham for the low, low price of $7.3 million over two seasons. Now the Giants were lining up a former third-round pick who had been a great disappointment — maybe even a bust.

Some fans would’ve preferred if Barden had been cut at the end of training camp in August. Others wanted him out last season when he was slow to recover from ankle surgery and missed the first eight games of the year." Read more...

Giants' Cougfhlin accused Buccaneers' coach of "trying to hurt" Eli

http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/giantsblog/coughlin_fiasco_some_down_nice_words_kuzYxDaAohwH8 HM6RHhYTK

Excerpt: "
It was clear from the moment Tom Coughlin walked across the field at MetLife Stadium and angrily confronted Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano that Coughlin was steaming. Coughlin didn’t appreciate seeing the Bucs go live on the final kneel-down play, resulting in the unsuspecting Giants offensive linemen getting their knees hit by low-flying helmets and Eli Manning getting knocked to the turf.

Coughlin wagged his finger as he berated Schiano. And now, thanks to some obscenity-laced audio of the non-cordial post-game handshake, it’s obvious just how upset Coughlin was." Read more...

Ramses Barden's big night included a big hug for Eli

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/barden_party_GrJ0ZGp9XQFxJzVlztfWAP

Excerpt: "Eli Manning takes pride in not getting surprised or shocked by anything that happens on and around the football field, but the expression on his face certainly showed he did not expect — down the stretch of Thursday’s 36-7 rout of the Panthers — to get a bear hug from behind by anyone, much less Ramses Barden, a player who hasn’t had much to celebrate during his time with the Giants.

“I just wanted really to express my appreciation and gratitude for Eli’s trust and faith in me throughout the game to keep coming my way,’’ Barden said.

It hasn’t been easy to maintain trust and faith in Barden’s ability, not after what essentially were three easily-forgotten seasons filled with characterizations such as “injury-prone” or “underachiever” or “bust.” If someone entered the Giants locker room for the first time, did not know a single player and was instructed to pick the 10 most impressive-looking athletes to start a team, Barden would be selected every time. But that statuesque 6-foot-6 frame and those long and chiseled muscles weren’t amounting to much of anything. In his first three seasons, Barden played in only 17 games and his production was negligible: Fifteen receptions, 174 yards." Read more...

Sullivan: Giants' QB Eli Manning lifting younger teammates to higher levels

http://www.northjersey.com/columnists/Sullivan_Giants_QB_Eli_Manning_lifting_younger_tea mmates_to_higher_levels.html

Excerpt: "
The hardest hit Eli Manning took Thursday night didn’t come from a Carolina defender, but from an elated teammate who couldn’t contain his gratitude. Manning was happily loitering on the sideline late in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s 36-7 laugher over the Panthers, his night’s work already done, when receiver Ramses Barden barreled into him from behind, wrapping him in a giant bearhug.

Manning swung around, and the wide-eyed look of surprise on his face was caught by television cameras eager to see how the Giants’ ironman quarterback was biding his time in such unaccustomed waters, having already given way to backup David Carr.
It was about the only thing that caught Manning by surprise all night." Read more..

NFL executive on Greg Schiano angering Tom Coughlin: "He pissed off the Godfather"

http://www.giants101.com/2012/09/23/nfl-executive-on-greg-schiano-angering-tom-coughlin-he-pissed-off-the-godfather/

Excerpt: "It's now been a week since Tampa Bay Buccaneers (http://www.giants101.com/tag/tampa-bay-buccaneers/) head coach Greg Schiano (http://www.giants101.com/tag/greg-schiano/)instructed his players to unnecessarily dive at the knees of New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Giants offensive lineman. Since then, there have been several interesting (see: shocking) developments, like the fines imposed on David Baas and Kevin Boothe (http://www.giants101.com/2012/09/21/new-york-giants-david-baas-kevin-boothe-kenny-philips-fined-by-nfl-for-week-two-incidents/) for what the league deemed "retaliation" for the potentially injury-inducing dive courtesy of TB. But perhaps more interesting than that has been the public displays of support for Big Blue head coach Tom Coughlin (http://www.giants101.com/tag/tom-coughlin/)." Read more...

Giants vs. Panthers, All-22 review: Carl Banks chimes in

http://www.bigblueview.com/2012/9/23/3376236/giants-vs-panthers-all-22-review-carl-banks-chimes-in

Excerpt: "In this week's 'All 22' review of the New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) 36-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/carolina-panthers) we have a special treat for you. Carl Banks, legendary Giants linebacker and current radio analyst, has offered us some observations. These were unsolicited, incidentally, so we thank Carl for taking the time to help us see the game through the eyes of someone who played the game well at the highest level.
With that said, let's look at the observations Carl passed along.
http://cdn0.sbnation.com/images/blog/star-divide.v59c7267.jpg
Ramses Barden's Big DayBarden, of course, had a career day with nine catches for 138 yards. Taking nothing away from what Barden accomplished, Banks said the Panthers' scheme made it easy on Barden.Carl says:"Panthers played their single high Free safety 20-23 yards deep. Very unusual it looked like he was fielding punts. Barden just had to win at the LOS with a good release and a clean route at 18-29 yards the plays were pitch and catch. Also working Cruz underneath because the MLB took deep drops in Tampa 2 to compensate for safety depth of 23 yards." Read more...

Marvin Austin" "I'm an NFL player now"

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/gia...nfl-player-now (http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/17545/marvin-austin-im-an-nfl-player-now)

Excerpt: "Marvin Austin (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14025/marvin-austin) can finally say it.

"I'm an NFL player now," the defensive tackle said Friday with a laugh.

The second-year defensive tackle played in his first NFL game, getting 17 snaps in the Giants' 36-7 win over the Panthers on Thursday night.

"It was a great experience. Dream come true," Austin said. "Just to go out there and run around with the guys and show my brand of football."

Austin was active against Tampa Bay on Sept. 16 but didn't get in. He did not register a tackle Thursday in his first non-preseason game since his junior year of college.

Austin had last played a meaningful game in 2009, in the Meineke Car Bowl with North Carolina in 2009. He was suspended for his senior season in 2010. After being drafted by the Giants in 2011, he missed his rookie season with a torn pectoral muscle he suffered in the preseason." Read more...
