Osi Umenyiora says there's no counter for what offenses are doing to neutralize the Giants' pass rush

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2012/10/osi_umenyiora_says_theres_no_c.html#incart_river

Excerpt: "Osi Umenyiora recorded a sack of Michael Vick Sunday, but it was just one of two on the night for the Giants and one Vick essentially surrendered to stay in bounds late in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles, Umenyiora said, countered the Giants pass rush like other teams have this season: by having the quarterback get rid of the ball quickly and providing more bodies in pass protection.

Umenyiora expressed concern when asked if there was an answer to the opposing offenses' strategy.

"There's really no counter for it, honestly," he said in an interview on ESPN Radio this afternoon. "Because if you blitz, obviously, we have some injuries in our secondary so you can't really commit too many people to a rush. If you don't do that then you're going to allow the teams to have more time because they're keeping more people in to protect." Read more...

lol this is coming from a guy that was burned all night by Mccoy I believe in JPP and Tuck, Joseph and Bernard but not Osi not anymore I really can't wait till Rivers and Canty is healthy maybe they move Kiwi to D-line and have Osi come in on 3rd and longs that is the only time I want to see him on the field cause obviously he is out there just for sacks and not playing with in the scheme....sorry had to get that off my chest lol.

So how come other defenses were able to pick off Vick? How come they were able to sack him? Excuses, excuses..

I would think(this is just a guess)that the best way to counter this would be tackling the QB or RB as they run past you

Osi should just really shut up cause our secondary wasn't the problem on Sunday it was the defensive line especially him...... how you hold MCcoy to 2 yards in the 1st half and let him go off for 121 in the 2nd is disgraceful. Quick passes??? Vick was back in the pocket all day...

Typical Osi hater! You believe in Tuck?? Well he has been a ghost this year.

They both have had bad seasons. If you want to bash Osi, that's fine, but at least be fair about it.

It's hard to imagine him saying this. If that's how he really feels, does that translate into "why bother hustling"?

I wrote this in another post but Osi is right. The only way to counter the quick pass is to play man 2-deep bump and run or to go single high safety and blitz up the middle. However, without the depth and experience at corner, you can't blitz.

well too be honest, i dont like how we are always playing off tech. 8 yds off the wr is gonna leave those short routes open. i think PF would rather give that up, than to be burned over the top ala week 1.

but at some point, u have to trust the guys to jam and reroute the wr's. thats what works vs us and we have excellent wr's/qb. so i have to assume it could work if we do it. we did it late last year and we saw how the D transformed.

prince and web should be playing more press to try and disrupt those short routes the qb cant get rid of it with the timing they practice, which leads to sacks. that'd be one way i'd think we could get after the qb, short pass and all

giantsfan420
10-02-2012, 07:06 PM
but whats especially burning us is when opposing offenses throw those short passes but the wr breaks a tackle or turns a corner on a defender who took a bad angle and 8 yds turns into 14 ala week 1 to close the game

There's no counter for the pass rush itself, well duh. Fewell needs to scheme around that instance.

Something anyone should have known for the last couple of years. Best way to beat a pass rush, quick passes. Course you would think that bump and run coverage would partially negate the quick pass. We may never know. Maybe why they played so well against Carolina.

If Osi had anything type of intelligence...He would know that when you play smaller QBs you need to contain them from rolling out and get your hands up. Smaller QBs love to roll out to get a better vision of the field...and just get your hands up because they can definitely bat those passes down. Eagles are not that good...and could of easily been 0-4 this season. Vick has been proned to making mistakes, and looked like a Hall of Famer on SUnday. Webster is trash too, Desean Jackson wiped the floor with him, but fans ae still worried about Coe, Tryon, etc.

Osi haters are clueless. The guy came back from injury last year for week 17 and had 6 sacks week 17 thru the super bowl (thats five games for the clueless people). Yea, he screwed up contain on McCoy, but he is still an important piece to this defense. You need multiple pass rushers to win in this league.

Osi is garbage...He only play well against back up Tackles who has QB's as athletic as a statue. If you run a draw, screen, or toss he will overpursue and complain to the media that this is the only way to contain him instead of adjusting and handling himself like a professional. He sulks on the bench, and if he has a multiple sack game in a losing effort, he has that "I did my part" attitude. Cut this loser and let Kiwi play the Defensive Line...Trade Osi or Tolly....Bring Back Tolly!!!

OSI needs to start using his brain more. He did not contain the outside and it cost us on a number of plays. Yes QB's will get rid of it quicker but that means or DB's and LB's need to be tighter. Here is a stat that is disturbing, Webster has given up nearly 350 receiving yards already that means he is on pace for giving up over a 1000 yards to WR's this year. This is a disturbing stat considering how much he is getting paid.

You must be a Dancing with the Stars judge because the only thing he has been doing out there this season is dance past the qb and spin his ways totally out of plays.

Yea, so I guess 4 sacks in the playoffs last year (ATL, GB, SF, NE) qualify Osi as garbage. LMAO.

Osi is a one trick pony...and sometimes sacks can be an overrated stat. JPP was a better rusher than him and did not play on the blindside as often and was more stout against the run. Osi does make huge plays at times, but makes alot of mistakes. Osi is about as overrated as Freeney..who are both nothing more than 3rd down speed rushers. Freeney benefited from Manning have a ridiculous offense while opposing offenses had to pass to play keep up and Osi benefits from having other Defensive Linemen like Joseph and JPP who plays well on 1st and 2nd downs.

I am going that far. I do agree with JPP and Tuck. Osi is talented, but he has to many mental lapse. Joseph and Bernard are doing absolutely nothing.

Odd, because I dont see the Eagles whining how we did this exact same thing to them.

The reason we lost is because Osi cannot keep contain. As long as Vick(not to mention McCoy), a left hander can get outside to his left anytime he wants, we are going to get shredded

giantsfan420

absolutely incorrect nycisgreat. Joseph and Bernard had excellent PFF ratings and were good vs the run. Mccoy got all his yards running circles around osi, thats just the truth. mccoy had 98!!!! yds BEFORE contact bc the cutback lane was wide open on account of osi; dt's were fine

They both suck bad this year.Tuck wasn't as bad as you think their was multiple times where you saw Osi going for the sack and Mccoy would just burn right pass him he clearly wasn't playing within the scheme when he should have been I don't think you can give me one time where Tuck was playing out of scheme and playing way to aggressive you have to stay disciplined when your playing mobile qbs you should know that....I'm not saying Osi is garbage like some people but he is at his best when his job is just to come in on 3rd and long and attack they qb other then that he is a liability in the run....

I was waiting for somebody to bring up the real problem. We lost contain on passing plays and running plays. Against the Eagles you have to sacrafice going after the big play to stay at home and stop the ridiculous play. Sunday night we let way too many ridiculous plays happen. Stopping Vick and McCoy takes disciplined football.

Osi was the problem here IMO, he left contain to get to Vick on multiple plays. It was digusting, didn't he chirp the the dline need to contain recently? Anyways I think he needs to check himself as a player, his angles are piss poor against a run first QB, and his run D is nearly non existent.

Osi's act is getting old quickly.

He will be gone next year and not a moment too soon for me. You can't even call him a sack specialist anymore, he talks far more than he plays and as we all know, he's below average against the run.

Paying him what we are paying him is tantamount to extortion. There is a reason not a single team in the league was willing to give up even a second or third round pick for a supposed "sack master". The book is out on Osi.........I'm ready for Ojomo to see some more snaps.

I love our D line and they did enough to win the game (should have been able to kick that field goal for the win) given that we were missing a couple of pieces on the back side specifically Hosely, who I think wouldn't shut down Jackson but would have limited him enough to make a difference and we were missing KP for most of the game. Finally, Rivers is another guy we were missing. I think we will give them fits the next time we play; hopefully it will be meaningful!
