View Full Version : Need clarification on the penalty...

We were called for illegally going out of bounds on Weatherford's punt that went 61 yards and went directly out of bounds. The following re-punt was huge return. Put us in the hole 14-0. if the first punts stands, we are defending from about the 35. Replay says nothing more because dipstick Billick is quacking. The normal penalty is if you are the gunner and go out of bounds, you cannot be the first to touch the ball or tackle, right? Did the gunner on the near sideline intentionally avoid the pressure and rundown the sideline out of bounds and we get called for that? A very rare call, and a huge penalty, rekick and a big turn of events. I went ballistic without seeing a clear replay. Anyone else got anything on this?

You're probably right with the gunner running out of bounds and down the sidelines to avoid the blocking defenders and got called for that. Not that they inexplicably tried to put Pacman Jones into the Pro Bowl today, but picking up where they left off from the Steelers game and going a quick 3 and out in response to the Bengals opending drive TD didn't help either in going down 14-0 early.

Just took another look of the replay. Tryon may have re-entered the field as the gunner on the left. Weatherford's kick went to the freakin' 15! And the call is made on Tryon. Cameras show special teams coach Quinn silent next to Coughlin. WTF? This call is NEVER made. Especially with no contact made. A complete mystery call.

We were called for the same thing one or two weeks ago!

I still am totally miffed about this call. Either way Tryon wasnt even a factor and the ball went out of bounds. What a BS call.
