I hear alot how underrated they were. Were they one of those under the radar teams that could have went all the way? Would they have provided a threat to the Packers and Broncos that year had they went all the way? I really believe the Vikings did us a favor that year otherwise I think we might not have made the super bowl even though we lost in the big game anyway. What do you guys think? Were the Giants good enough that year to be like the 07 or 11 Giants.

I was 8 myself when they first made it back to the playoffs. The fact that Fassel made a team with Danny Kanell on it a playoff team was impressive to say the least. That's kinda how the Falcons are now and the Niners with Smith... mediocre QB surrounded with a huge amount of talent.

I loved the 1997 team and I was only 13 years old. It was sad that they blew it against the Vikings in the playoffs because they were fighting on the sidelines. We eventually lost it on special teams.

i didn't really follow the giants back then. i was only 6 years old. i started following them at the beginning of the 2005 season which was eli's first full year as a starter and i remember watching the 08 team thinking that they would have a very good shot at repeating. then burress shot himself and everything went down hill from their. if they had beaten the eagles i think they could've definetly beaten the cardinals and then the steelers.

Rodgers12

Yep. If the Giants won they would have gone to Lambeau the next round and faced us. Instead the Vikes went to SF and lost 38-22 and we played Tampa and beat them 21-7 en route to losing to Denver in the Super bowl.

You guys got screwed in that game against SF just like we got jobbed in the 98 wildcard game against SF. I remember that Giants SF game like it was yesterday. Wasnt it a Sunday playoff game? I remember Shockey dropped a TD pass and from there the Niners came back. If he catches that I really believe the Giants could have gave the Bucs all they could handle the next round.

The 97 team wasn't that special overall. The running game should have been better those days with a young Tiki, a hungry Wheatley, amazing Charles Way, and finally the last year of my man Rodney Hampton. I remember Dave Brown getting hurt and Danny Kannell came in and won the game on the first play in overtime. I remember these being the days the defense literally carried this team. But like I said, they weren't that special overall because they were missing so many pieces.

Talk about getting screwed. That was one of the main reasons why I was so hyped for the game against SF in the playoffs last year.

The NFC East has our number. Dallas beat us every year in the playoffs from 1993-1995. Philly had a 4 or 5 game winning streak against us from 2003-2006. Now you guys of course. I wonder when the Skins will start owning us lol.

That year they went 10-5-1... Had just shaken off Dan Reeves and Dave Brown. Still had Rodney Hampton... Tiki, Toomer, Hilliard, Strahan, Armstead, Sehorn, Phillipe Sparks...

Home playoff game and they were up by 9 points with 2:00 left. Vikings score quick and recover an onside kick and win the game. Our guys were fighting on the sideline. Strahan in particular was ready to kill from what I remember.

+1. The '02 Giants were a veeerrrrry dangerous team. They were absolutley throttling the the Terrell Owen and Jeff Garcia 49ers and were probably the hottest team in football at that time. Everyone can blame Shockey or Trey Junkins for losing that game, but I don't. I blame the defense for blowing that huge lead. Just like they did in 2010 against the Eagles in the 2nd game of the regular season at home.

Giants vs TB would have been a damn good game.

Everything you said is dead on.....couldn't have written it better myself. Senior year in HS for me......but that team wasn't that special.....was actually surprised they won 10 games that year. The Calloway onsides kick was an absolute killer though......if I remember correctly it hit him perfectly square in the numbers on a bounce and popped off his chest.

The 2002 team had so much more potential and I still believe if the Niners don't storm back the Giants are hoisting the Lombardi that year.

Wow, some good reminiscing here.

Back in those days the coverage in the UK wasn't like now.
I remember listening to the Rams game on the American Forces Network radio station.

This was on am and had a horrible habit of switching to European "Ooompah" music at crucial moments.

I still remember the despair when I heard "Hey Flipper Anderson, for all you do this Bud's for you".

97 Vikings game, I have limited memories of, but the 2000 Vikings championship game .... that's a different matter.

For one day Kerry Collins was Joe Montana.

The 2002 SF game, jeez, if ever a game summed up the experience of being a Giants fan.

So many ifs buts and maybes in those losses, it's a roller coaster ride and no mistake.

Great coaching staff though ... Sean Peyton (OC) and John Fox (DC).
The ONE thing that stunk about making SB XXXV (besides losing SB XXXV) was that it guaranteed that Fassell was getting an extension. He deserved it because he wasn't a bad HC and got to them the SB, but I never ever trusted him and he drove me nuts. I wanted Fox to become the HC.

In 2000, wasn't that also the year that Fassell took over the play calling from Peyton? If my memory serves me correct, the Giants O really jelled when Fassell did the play calling.

I feel bad for Fassell -- he should have gotten another chance as a HC or OC for another team. Can't believe the Browns or Bills never hired him.
