was it the Sheikh SEC? name these three guys..... http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/8506/postgame.jpgpisarchik,brookshire,mcvay nice gotta love it....pictures like that are so nostalgic to me.....I feel like I could smell the air in the stadium in the 70s......when I was able to run up those steps to take a quick piss.....hahahahaha..... even though we were pretty bad...I have such wonderful memories connected to those 70s games.....aaaahhhhh my 20s

I agree, YA. I think it was because we always had good D. Giant fans are always about D.* It's the work ethic mentality, and we had a group od players that always gave 100%.

Most of the offenses struggled, which was why we never prospered. The effort was always there, but the size and skill level wasn't.

Plus, it was a new beginning in the stadium, after years of bouncing around. We were ready to get down to business and establish ourselves anew. Once we got in to the stadium we knew, at least, that we'd have a good D to start us off.* Getting Phil in '79 was a first step. Getting LT in '81 helped make a really good D into a monster D. When Phil matured, along with the Suburbanites, we were ready for the top.

It was a great time watching the team change and develop in those first 10 years. There were many of those players from the mid to late 70's that I wish had a chance at some post season glory.* Guys like Mendenhall, who I don't think ever played in a playoff game. Gregory, Kelley, Van Pelt, Kotar... and many more great Giant warriors.
the bad thing about that pic is brookshire turning to pisarchik and asking,"how could you put that ball on his hip??"and, before he can answer, turns to mcvay and says,"and why didn't you have him just take a knee?"oh,how my guts were ripped out on that day![+o(]

on the way home from the stadium that day.....knowing that play had a huge impact on the game obviously but not knowing the long term impact.....I said to dad this has to be rock bottom, it cant get any worse so it has to start getting better....and ill never forget what he said to me....he said.....Giants fans who werent even old enough to be here today will know of this as one of the worst days in the teams history....

that was a long silent ride home

Who was the first NFL placekicker [ A Giant] to kick 5 field goals in his first NFL game?

Good guess RC...but no.* It's a*pretty hard answer but I'm sure you guys all remember his name

I'm glad you bumped this, sec. I remember trying to think of the answer and coukln't... then I never saw the answer.

I can only think of Dan Reeves boy, Treadwell.* He kicked a rash of FG's in his first game. But, I think it was only 4. So it isn't him.

tried to think of another first game of the season where we coulda had 5 FG;s, and can't think of one, so I'm thinking his first game was mid season.

Tell!
how bout pat summerall?

This kicker came soon after Ali Haji Shiek and might have played only part of 1 season

There we go ....Schubert kicked 5 field goals against Tampa Bay. Shiek was hurt and Jess Atkinson had been released. Eric was with us in training camp 1985. Parcels brought him back and he delievered the 5 in his first NFL game. That was his only season with us I think. He played in about 8 or 9 games

One is easy... John Hicks, All American Guard from Ohio State and our first round pick in '74. His number was also 74. He played 4-5 years and retired due to injuries.

Can't remember another, but I'll be thinking on it.

I'm trying to resolve the difference in mental image I developed of you, YA. First I saw a cute little boy sitting by his family on Christmas day, maybe 11 years old, with a NY Giant football helmet on his head. I couldn't see your hair color, but everything told me you had dirty blond hair.

Then, I see this pic of you at 29, all dark haired, and it just didn't compute...lol.

I'm anxious for us to get together at a Giant game this season. Only then will I know the real YA.

and yeah...the salt and pepper has reared its head in the past 10 years.....especially in the beard and sides of my head....

I love the common mistake fans make when referring to Nicks....calling him Hicks..... can you name a couple Giants that actually had the last name Hicks? their positions and numbers? their college for extra credit..... ;)

One is easy... John Hicks, All American Guard from Ohio State and our first round pick in '74.* His number was also 74.* He played 4-5 years and retired due to injuries.

Can't remember another, but I'll be thinking on it.

Good questions. And, yes, lots of peeps call Nicks 'Hicks'

great call Zim....the other is a bit more obscure.....

he didnt have much more than a cup of joe in the league...late 70s early 80s

the second one is Eddie Hicks RB out of East Carolina

was a Giant in 79 and 80

that would all be so interesting to me.....maybe with some pictures thrown in here and there....

she just seemed like such an intriguing woman and goes back with the team farther than anyone here....

That sounds like a great idea YA, but we don't have to hold it to just Zimmy. We could possibly create a thread called simply Giants Stories where everyone can contribute. Tell stories of a certain game or season or even an event that is Giants related.

That sounds like a great idea YA, but we don't have to hold it to just Zimmy. We could possibly create a thread called simply Giants Stories where everyone can contribute. Tell stories of a certain game or season or even an event that is Giants related.

YA... I agree with jints10... it would be nice. Alas, with Aunt Jean being dead for close to 20 years, I am afraid that I have re-told most of the stories she tols me that I can remember. There were dozens of other stories, but I can't remember them. They were mostly personal stories... like, what the players thought about their coaches, and what they thought of each other. Evidently the dinners she had for the O linemen every Monday was filled with them plying her with all kinds of inside info. A lot of the stories were about stuff that went on in practice... you know, the D always looked down on the O, and there were some crazy things that went on in practice where the O line tried to show our defensive players that they could hold their own. They didn't hold back from each other in their own practices.

She also knew Owens, Jim Lee, and many of the defensive players. I don't think she got to know Allie. She never liked him and justified it (like all Giant fans who knew what was going on) because the players also hated him.

That just reminded me... I have a great question for the 1950 Giant/Ottowa preseason game.

Anyways, I don't think I have enough aunt Jean stories rememberedto do a blog justice. It woulod be really nice to find a few old codgers in their 70's to tell a few... if they could remember...lol

Maybe a simple thread would be suitable... Giant Stories.... stories of Giant players, coaches, specific games, and personal experiences, at games or otherwise, worth a tale

Like I said, it was mass confusion, especially in the first half, with the rules being Canadian in the first half and NFL in the second. The first Qtr ran 49 minutes. The 2nd Qtr ran 32 minutes.

Anyways, the Roughriders were smaller, but faster, and were, as you'd expect, hitting like hell and swarming to the ball.

The Giants were quite confused the first quarter, especially with Canadian rules... until this Giant player, already familiar with their rules, came in to QB and settled them down. Who was that man?

Really... one of the oddest Giant tidbits, ever. IIs there a Giant fan alive who knew that?

I'm picturing the start of the game... The Gmen aren't doing as well as they expected. They're confused. So, what happens? Sherman, the DB Coach who hasn't played ball in 3 years, walks over to Owens and says, " Coach, let me go suit up and I'll get us going?"

I mean, seriously... how does that happen?

There's no Box Score, and none of the 1st half scoring shows a TD pass from Sherman, so we don't know if he even attempted a pass.

I know Zim ....right.... I look at ticket stubs just 10 years ago and......all I have to say is the greed can possibly kill this great sport of ours. Do you think the NFL with ticket prices and PSLs the way they are can last a strike? Will there be law suits? Where will it end?

I love the sport , but hate the greed.

Somebody had a clip of Jacobs in Philly up and Brandon said something to the effect I got paid, got me mine. Can you imagine the guys that had to take second jobs in the off season say anything like that? In some ways I wish we all told them to F-off with their PSLs but I love to go to games and don't want to risk my seat.

In 1930, at a time when many still held college football as far superior to professional, the Giants played and hosted a college team that included some greats from the previous year’s college championship team. The Giants won the game (whose proceeds went to charity), holding this college team scoreless on what many consider the day professional football gained its legitimacy. What team did they beat? Notre Dame "All-Stars". * You are correct http://i43.tinypic.com/2553rx1.jpg

Wow, times have changed. $20,000 PSL's... $750 per game.

I have lots of mixed emotions, too... but, about all sports. I remember 1965, Koufax and Drysdale holding out for $100,000. lol. It seemed like a lot then, but not outrageous. Today, contracts in all sports are outrageous. You have guys riding the pine in baseball who are getting $2 Mil a year.

Football has 2 preseason and 8 regular season games, for 10 total games in front of 70 - 80,000. Baseball has 81 home games at say 40,000 per game. How can football afford these salaries? Today I have about 10 Giant shirts, 2 coats, socks, license plate, many hats, coffee cups, glasses, key chains, pictures, DVD's,. My wife had similar, and PJ's, slippers, etc. I probably see the word, 'Giants' everyday more than any other word. When I was 15 I don't think I owned a single thing.

Everything changed when agents entered and the product became Entertainment. And, too many of the players have been treated special and made to feel entitled since they were in High School. Yeah, Giant players up to the mid '60's, when the AFL started to compete for players, had to hold down 2 jobs... like teachers. Excpet for the real 'Stars', the regular grunts didn't earn much more than the common man.

I just try to enjoy the game, the players, and not think about the greed involved... otherwise it would be difficult.

I saw that clip to....and everyone in that thread seems to be real excited about the way Brandon is acting....

hearing that come out of his mouth gave me a bit of a sick feeling......

cant imagine what any of th eold time players would think of hearing him say that.....not only the old timers who had to hold second jobs...but even guys like Carson and Martin and such.....or even Brandons head coach......Im sure he wouldnt look to kindly upon that....

the money has gone insane jints....gone insane everywhere.....

when I first started working for Kiss in '74 they had just signed their first deal and got ...no advance....and were making $600 for a whole tour.....

a band I recently helped get signed ....a band of 4 guys....got an 8 million dollar advance......8 MILLION!!!!!!!!!!.........thats 2 million dollars a piece for some 20 year old guys who havent proved a damn thing yet.......havent even recorded a record yet......

too bad I dont get any of that....hahahahaha....

can you imagine rookies coming into the league in ...lets say ...the early 60s.....getting the kind of money these first round picks are getting today.....

I guess it started with Joe Wille and his $400,000 contract...and took off from there

I no longer see it as incentive .....and see it as a complete distraction and an aspect that will slowly destroy the game that we all love.......

its like the saying goes.....pop will eat itself.....

I just got here and saw the question, SEC. So, I sat here for a few minutes thinking about great Giants and whose name could be a town.

I have to admit... I never thought of Jim Thorpe... even though I knew itmany yearsbeforeI moved here, 18 years ago... I read his biography when I was about 13... 50 years ago. Then, I read through the posts and saw the answer from ny06.

DUH! My own dimness is a constant source of amazement.

Quick story on my typical dimness for anyone who wants to read it.... I had lived in a house in NJ for about 5 years, and my Mother in Law is visiting (Aunt Jean's sister). We called her the White tornado because she was always cleaning. I come home from work and smell fresh paint inside. I ask her, "What did you paint?" She says, "What do you mean. Look around. You can't miss it." So, I walk through the dining room, living room, and down the hallway to the bedrooms. I see that all the walls are white. Inotice nothing new, so I look in the bedrooms and notice nothing. So, I say to her again, "I didn't notice anything. What did you paint?"

She is amazed and yells, "I painted the Dining room, living room and the hallway."

I look at the white paint and say,"Oh. What color were they before?"

"Gold," she screams.

5 years, and the color of the walls never registered in my brain.

So, is it any wonder that I forgot where I'm living.

My wife always said to me, "You live in a bubble."

I have dozens of stories like that. My friends, who are used to it, laugh and say, "He pulled another Zimbo."

Just some insight about old man Zimbo... not that we needed it.

Now, I'll go away...lol

another useless tidbit... Mauch Chunk (an Indian Name) became Jim Thorpe in '53. None of his relatives wanted his remains to bury in OK, where he was born, or in Carlisle, Pa. where he went to a school for Indians. He used to barnstorm through Mauch Chunk often to play baseball and softball, so they bought his remains (how much would you pay for a dead athlete's remains?) from his 3rd wife and changed thye name of the town.

Jim Thorpe was recently voted one of the top 10 "Best small towns in America."

I looked at the Box score... Gary Huff was the TB QB. Piacarcik and Golsteyn both played. Still can't imagine a first since all the QB's were in the league the previous year.

Maybe I got my games mixed up Z.......not sure now..I asked the question from my memory and did not research it first. I always thought Tampa Bay QB RookieDoug Williams started that opening day game against us in 1978 down in Florida. Making him the first black QB to start a game for an NFC team. Could use a little help from you guys on this if I'm mistaken

Z

Doug Williams played in that game. He had 2 touchdowns with 3 interceptions. Danelo kicked a field goal in the 4th quarter that sealed the victory.

Not sure what site that infos on ny06...............maybe I was right?.Does it say if he started?

I have no idea if he started or not. I had to look it up. Off the top of my head I knew that was the season Doug Williams got drafted out of Grambling. But I was unsure if he started the game against the Giants.

No wait the first game OJ played in Blue was against the Cowboys in the meadowlands wasnt against the boys...... for anyone who missed the question.......... what did the Giants give up to get OJ Anderson in 1986? ...and who was the first team OJ played against in Giant uniform? Was it the skins game on monday night? And I think the Giants aquired OJ through waivers?

I'll take a guess on whenOJ first played............ game 2 of 86 vs San Diego?

OK, SEC... my bad. I just looked up the box score in Pro-Football reference. It doesn'r say who started but the line score was: Gary Huff - 9 for 22 with 2 INT's. Doug Williams - 1 for 5 with 1 INT. When I first looked I didn't see Williams numbers.

The only TB TD was on a run... and they had 2 FG's

It was 16 - 13, Giants, when Danelo kicked his FG in the 4th.

If Williams didn't start, it was at least his first game. If he did start, they pulled the plug on him early.

It hurt that Allie traded Rosieto the Rams before the '63 season... for John LoVetere. He was the first JLo...lol. He wasn't as good as Rosie, but for Allie it was all about proving who the boss was, and the Mara's let him do whatever he wanted, which meant dismantling one of the best D's in the NFL
