We didn't have a 1st rnd pick that year. I think Strahan was a 2nd rounder. I think Armstead was a 6th or 7th rounder... good pick

78 season home game against the Eagles.....the game I refuse to connect the word "Miracle" to......

late 4th quarter Eagles scoring drive.......3 Giant penalties on 3rd down plays kept that drive alive.....2 PI calls on the same player.....and one roughing the passer on a D linemen.....

without those penalties ....the Eagles most likely punt or kick a field goal......and there is a good chance Herms fumble recovered TD is meaningless......

those penalties have stuck in my craw for many many years...and I have never forgotten who they were on....

who were those penalties called on?

hint : one of them was a rookie

and as a bonus....what happened after that Eagles TD that kept the game 17-12?

and as a 3rd part ......

who fumbled on the next Giant possession and gave the Eagles another shot?.......Jaws ended up throwing a pick that set up the infamous

....can you tell that game is still a thorn in my shorts...?... ;)

I will take a guess on this. As for the penalties I think one was called on Terry Jackson and John Mendenhall?

After the eagles scored the touchdown didnít they miss the extra point?

That can only be VanPelt and Kelly... rookies in '73 and played together thru the '83 season. Two great LB's who gave us every drop of sweat.

It was a terrible 11 years for our Giants, but there was maximum fan satisfaction in the yearly effort of our defense... some great names, many of whom deserved a few play-off games.

Along with the Kotar question, who was also total effort and beloved by our fans, and who died too young, these two questions also made me think of a Giant rookie in '83, a FB, who also died too young... 2 years later. He was also beloved by his team mates, the fansand even Parecells.

Who was that FB?

Enclosed is a link to a story about that FB. It's a 4 page story but, especially as Giant fans, you will find every minute worth while and get a warm fuzzy for many of our players who knew him... especially Rob Carpenter. Do yourself a favor and read it.

On a similar note... I was thinking about that period of the Giants and certain players... we lost Troy Archer who was just turning into a sure All-Pro, Then, in '79 Dan lloyd, a player beloved for his special teams play, was diagnosed with cancer and he had to quit. Tuggle, and then some years later Kotar, died of cancer.

Here's a 2 page article about Dan Lloyd that's well worth the time... more insights into some of our Giants of the time.

I'm not surprised you had already seen it. RC was an important addition to our offense and he was incredibly versatile... running, receiving and blocking. It hurt when he had that unforced fumble in the '85 NFC Championship... that and the Landeta whiff were the difference. Then it hurt that Rob wasn't a part of the '86 championship.

I remember Tuggle very well and was sitting first row, 50 yard line in that preseason game, and could hearParcellswhen he toldhim he could play for him any time. It was a nice moment.

That was before you had to buy the poreseason tickets and you could upgrade your seat to where peoples weren't going. I lucked out and got front and center, Giants side, for that game. My normal tickets were 37 yd, line, 19 rows up. I never upgraded again because, while it was nice sitting so close, I missed sitting with the regulars in my area.

hey, rbc... did you ever know the close relationship between Rob Carpenter and John Tuggle? Go back a page and hit the link.

actually, zim,i read it back in 86 when it first came out. always knew he and carpenter were close, rob spoke of it often in the time after tuggles passing.but thanks for linking it so we could all see it.i still remember the #38 on the helmets after he died.another fine young man taken way too soon.[:'(]

I never upgraded again because, while it was nice sitting so close, I missed sitting with the regulars in my area.
yes,it always burned my taco that he got traded before getting to the big game, since i always felt he was one of the pieces put in place during the 81 season that helped us get to where we could compete for a championship.but i'll tell you what, zim:i'm going to have to go back and look at a tape of that bears game.i know he fumbled on the opening drive, but i could have sworn he got hit as he caught a pass in the middle of the field, and he got hit before he really had possesion.i recall being in my folks living room, screaming,"that's NOT a fumble,it's incomplete!!".i double check it just for memory bank testing.[B]

geez, I wish you would... my memory was a complete pass and RC rumbling about 20 yards past the LOS, at about the 50, or the Bears 40-45 with the ball, no one touching him, and then he went to changes hands and lost the handle, which I chalked up to the cold weather and his inability to feel the ball properly.

Didn't LT catch a pass from him at half time a few years ago? I seem to recall Simms made him go deep (and LT was scared he'd drop it)

Not the correct answer, I know. But amusing fact.

going in to week 10 against the Cowboys in 1980 the Giants were on an 8 game losing streak......everyone expected it would be 9 straight after playing the 7-2 Cowboys......it would have tied the teams longest losing streak

how many players did the Giants have on IR going in to that Dallas game?

and how many rookies were on that team?

The part that gets me Confsued is the amount of players on IR. I know Carson missed a good portion of the season that year. As for the rookies the 2 that stick out are Mark Haynes and Scott Brunner

I couldnt resist this one.....

what "TE" wink wink......caught a TD pass against Dallas at Giants Stadium in 1980?

that play followed a long pass reception by who?

see my post just before this one for a hint..... ;)

rbcarpenter is correct about George Martin. If I remember correctly Earnest Gray caught the big pass from Simms?

Larry Heater caught the big pass to set up the Martin TD

How many touchdowns does George Martin have?7.i heard at one time he had the most td's by a dl ever.does that still hold true?(i really don't know, just asking.)

George Martin was the current record holder for defensive lineman with 7 touchdows.

I think Jason Taylor passed him with 9.

In the 1979 draft the Giants selected Phil Simms. Who in the first round could the Giants have selected after Simms who is now a hall of famer?

I believe you are speaking of Kellen Winslow?

that would have left us with Pisarcik and Brunner....and possibly never picking up Bavaro........glad we didnt take him

correct. It is intresting to look back at drafts and see the players we could of had or missed on. Through all the love/hate Phil had to endure here he was a solid QB

So does anyone have a guess on who this DL [no. 79]was who we drafted in the early seventies? He was great at Nebraska but only lasted a year or so with us before moving to World Football League
