Ray Walsh is correct......and Well wanted Terry Bledsoe to replace Andy for some reason they called Walsh and Andy ...head of football operations......but they did everything a GM would do.... they were basically GMs here is a piece of an article I found where Paul Zimmerman describes the situation. It was a weird, grandfatherly organization. For five years the Giants' general manager had been their former defensive right end, Andy Robustelli, who came to the team from his travel business in Connecticut. Before him, and as far back as anyone could remember, it had been Ray Walsh, basically an accountant. Robustelli's five years had produced four seasons in the division cellar and another at 6-10. In short, there was no veteran pro football GM to run things and there hadn't been for many years. Fans were wringing their hands. One guy had flown a small plane bearing the banner "15 Years of Lousy Football We've Had Enough" over Giants Stadium during a game. Robustelli was clearly in over his head. Wellington Mara, and his playboy nephew, Timmy, the team's vice president, were openly feuding. Tim, the rebel, who had never been known for original thought, was being propped up by a consortium of former Giants players who fed him his lines and figured to be an integral part of a new power structure. Wellington's man to replace Robustelli was Terry Bledsoe, a former sports writer from Milwaukee whom Wellington had known through Bledsoe's work on the NFL's Management Council. Bledsoe had never scouted a player in his life. An impasse developed. Rozelle stepped in. .....and that picture is absolutely Leonard Marshall

Thanx for clearing all that up, YA. Bottom line, George Young was the first Giant GM who had GM qualifications and had the authority to do what a GM needs to do, without interference from the Mara's. Ya' gotta laugh at Walsh, an accountant, being an effective GM, and if Rozelle hadn't stepped in and Well had his way hiring Bledsoe we would have had another tool for the Mara's, and not a true GM.

Young's effect was immediate in the '79 draft. If Young were not there we probably don't draft Simms, and who knows if Mara/Bledsoe would have been astute enough to take LT in '81.

Z
This one I know, having worked with a guy from the Baltimore area who was a huge George Young fan. He was drafted by the Dallas Texans but I don't believe he ever played for them. I think he went straight into teaching. I remember listening to Young give an interview where he was alternately a world of knowledge, a grandfatherly type and a prickly pear who wouldn't give any information that would tip his hand on a trade the draft etc. He was a great football executive..............thank you Pete Rozelle!

Darrell Dess and Bookie Bolin were two terrific guards for us in the 60's. Dess made the pro-bowl twice. How tall was he and how much did he weigh while playing OL in the NFL?

He was short by today's standards... I'll say 5'11"... less than 6'0"... and about 250, tops.

They're taller and heavier these days. Lots of good fruits and veggies.

You are right, Dess was listed at 6' 243 lbs (which means <6' and 238 lbs soaking wet). and Bolin was listed at 6'2" 240 lbs. In today's NFL we'd be giving away about 100 lbs per lineman. It is amazing how the game has changed. "Jumbo" Elliott at 308 lbs. would not be a jumbo today.

Dang, scoops beat me to it. I think you're right.

I was in Bermuda in '72 and I dove off of several large rocks jutting up and not too far offshore. Maybe 10 - 20 ft. up. There were kids diving off rocks that were about 30-40 ft. high. Where they cliff dive is another area... it's a beautiful island.

Im pretty upset right now guys....Im not a guy who complains much ...but I have come here to vent...

I left Albany late last night because I could not sleep due to pretty severe back pain mixed with numbness....

it turns out that the 2 lumbar herniated discs in my back that I have been having treated on and off for about 9 months have gotten worse and my chiropractor who is almost completely holistic has recommended surgery......which is highly unlike her......

we are meeting with another Dr tomorrow to look at the x rays.......a Dr she recommends....

if I do need the surgery I will have to give up my tickets to my sons .........

what upsets me is that I havent even seen the inside of the new stadium yet.....

they tell me if I dont deal with this now it will just get worse and worse......

I can barely sit or walk without pain.......lying on my back is the only comfortable position right now......

It feels strange because I have a serious back condition and the only thing Im worried about is missing football.......its been such a huge part of my life for so long that the thought of not being part of it this season leaves me with an emptiness type of feeling.....

sucks to get old....

thanks for listening guys......yr like family....and thats not the pain killers talking

this will be a huge blow for me....ill keep you posted

YA... maybe I already told you I've had 3 back surgeries... at 30, 40 and 50. The l.ast, 13 years ago, they put in 2 titanium posts and 6 screws at L 2, 3, and 4. I've been great since then, although I had 9 steroid injections in my discs to shrink them a little. Ask your doc if an injection could help. You can get something like 3 a year.

Have you had therapy? If not, lie on the floor on your back and gently pullone knee to the chest... alternate legs, and then do both at one time. 10 reps each. This simple exercise stretches the spine and helps make more room for the nerves. That and walking are the single best things you can do... unless you hurt too much to walk. I walk 8 miles every weekend.

Stiff matress, and don't sit in chairs or couches that are very soft.

Good luck with this. If you eke out making the Steeler game I'll talk to you some more and show you the best exercises.

Let me try to cheer you up YA with this one. I have to be a little vague to get this started or I will give it away. If no one gets it I will add some more clues................In the early 1980's at the NFL draft the gallery was loaded with signs calling for Big Blue to draft a local kid. Who was this player and what did the signs say? First hint, his last name rhymed with the position he would play for Big Blue.

If no one gets it I will add some more clues................In the early 1980's at the NFL draft the gallery was loaded with signs calling for Big Blue to draft a local kid. Who was this player and what did the signs say? First hint, his last name rhymed with the position he would play for Big Blue.

Local boy? Billy Ard?

Let Ard be your Guard.

YA, first get well. Your health is so much more important than going to see the Giants in person. Recover at home, with your family, and hopefully a laptop to keep in touch with us here, and of course the Giants on TV.

Get well, stay positive and keep us informed. I, and I'm sure others do as well, feel like you are part of the family. Get your back all fixed up, the Giants will be waiting for you when you are better.

Ard never got All Pro, but he was excellent, as were the rest of the Suburbanites.

Ard was an 8th round pick in '81 by the Giants,

Every Giant fan knows who our No. 1 was that year.

Question: What was unique about Ard's 8th round selection by the Gmen?

Sorry if this is vague... I don't know any other way to ask it.

We ought to start getting organized.

Anyone going, please quote this and add your own thoughts that will make this as smooth as possible.

Parking is all new, and we'll be coming in different entrances. But, most will be coming early enough that we can end up next to each other. I say we exchange cell numbers among everyone planning on going. The first one there to establish a decent spot should start calling the others, and then all try to go there. I plan on getting there about 3PM... earlier if needed.

Why don't we all come self-sustained on eats. I'll probably bring subs and beers instead of BBQing... but, I have a portable gas 2 burner I can bring if anyone needs.

I've been looking for pics of my crew and I at the games but can't remember passwords and such but we were featured at an Eagles game on this very board Giants Home Page...can't find it though

You guys might enjoy and I don't remember if I've posted this link on this thread before:

Username: Seahawksgiants
Password 100508

I think about 120 pics from my seats......My intention was that I was gonna take pics and post em on this board but in the heat of battle (a Giants game) I broke a really nice camera......Lets just say I wont be bringing a camera into a game anytime soon.

I'll post more photobucket accounts soon (if I can remember em) and of coarse if y'all are interested let me know

Contact me for the fax #.

Now to take your mind off of your pain, I have a trivia question for you all. We all know Simms was 22-25 for 268 in SB XXI. But who were the three incompletions thrown to all in the 2nd qtr?

Hint: the answer is three different receivers.

It feels strange because I have a serious back condition and the only thing Im worried about is missing football.......its been such a huge part of my life for so long that the thought of not being part of it this season leaves me with an emptiness type of feeling..... sucks to get old.... thanks for listening guys......yr like family....and thats not the pain killers talking this will be a huge blow for me....ill keep you posted YA......We're all thinking of you and hoping you can get your GIANTS fix on Monday against the jets. YA I am a chiropractor. I've been in practice for 26 years. If you want a third opinion, fax me the MRI and I'll let you know what I think. Contact me for the fax #. Now to take your mind off of your pain, I have a trivia question for you all. We all know Simms was 22-25 for 268 in SB XXI. But who were the three incompletions thrown to all in the 2nd qtr? Hint: the answer is three different receivers.

I'll give this a shot

The three receivers are Bavaro, Manuel, Robinson?

You are close. You got two of the three, but I'm not going to tell you which two. Here's another hint- On the first incompletion, the receiver complained of blatant interference, on the second incompletion - Simms had a guy wrapped around his knees as he threw, and on the third the receiver looked liked he was interfered with.

First incompletion was to Bavaro and he was clearly interfered with but it wasn't called. The last incompletion was to McConkey and he claimed he was interfered with. They didn't show a replay. But the second incompletion was to someone else while a Bronco was hanging on Simms. Another clue - he had a big game in SF during the regular season that year in the same game Bavaro dragged Lott about 15 yards.

First Packer game 2007.......Shockey all alone waving his arms.......Eli has the lane to throw.........What is the result of the play?

I figure nobody else wants to take a stab at this one so here goes......Shockey catches the pass and picks up 34 yards to put the Giants in at least field goal range......but slams the ball into the turf picking up 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty knocking it down to a 19 yard play and out of field goal range.....Giants did not score on the drive.

Oh no, now I remember the play. I thought the zebra over reacted a little but Shockey shouldn't have given them an opportunity to make that call. Missing YA on this thread!

he signed on the 17th of.....March I believe ?

what coach on the current Jets coaching staff got a Superbowl ring as a Giants player?

thanks for all the well wishes men.....been outta commission for a bit.....

looks like surgery for ole YA

the lower disc is bulging and the one just above it.....they say is almost completely deteriorated and will soon cause bone on bone which will result in unbearable pain.....

I have been told that these could be a direct result of me walking on my right knee which has 4 screws in it for years and years from an old football injury.......thats sort of the short of it.......without using all the technical jargon

if this is true......the irony of one of my lifes loves ......playing football....is now years later causing me to miss another love.....watching live NFL football has been swirling around my brain.....

I havent officially turned the tickets over to my oldest boy yet.....but it looks like it may be a reality....

my goal is to make one last pre season game...the Steeler game......but we will see

Zimmy I would love to pick your brain about the recovery process ....I know you have been through it all my man....

...anyway ...thanks again men for the well wishing.....

my attitude is always....it could be worse...

everyday above ground is a good day

lets take it to the Jets tonight boys......heres some Hard Knocks for you

Get well brother, boards are not the same without you.
agreed, the boards haven't been the same in your absence, and i hope to see you at the steelers game.

This could be an easy one... Why did Plax pick #17 when he joined the G-men? he signed on the 17th of.....March I believe ? what coach on the current Jets coaching staff got a Superbowl ring as a Giants player? thanks for all the well wishes men.....been outta commission for a bit..... looks like surgery for ole YA the lower disc is bulging and the one just above it.....they say is almost completely deteriorated and will soon cause bone on bone which will result in unbearable pain..... I have been told that these could be a direct result of me walking on my right knee which has 4 screws in it for years and years from an old football injury.......thats sort of the short of it.......without using all the technical jargon if this is true......the irony of one of my lifes loves ......playing football....is now years later causing me to miss another love.....watching live NFL football has been swirling around my brain..... I havent officially turned the tickets over to my oldest boy yet.....but it looks like it may be a reality.... my goal is to make one last pre season game...the Steeler game......but we will see Zimmy I would love to pick your brain about the recovery process ....I know you have been through it all my man.... ...anyway ...thanks again men for the well wishing..... my attitude is always....it could be worse... everyday above ground is a good day lets take it to the Jets tonight boys......heres some Hard Knocks for youHey YA, count me among thelegion who have missed you here. ............Wishing you all the best with the operation. Here's a thought. The new stadium is really geared up well for "accessiblity." Why don't you talk to the Giants about one of those wheel chair seats. You might let them know that it could be for a while or maybe permanent. Someone there may have just the solution for you. All the best, Jomo.

Jeeeeezz I go away on little vacation time and return to find outour main man YA is hurting. Wishing you all the best Mr. Tittle. My brother had a back operation about 5 years ago and it turned out great. Took him a little while to recover but these days he's as good as new. I can understand what you are going through. It WILL get better my friend! Keep that positive outlook of yours , something I have always respected about our "Did You Know" leader [Y] SEC105

So my parking passes came while I was away. They a have big G on them , whatever that means. I just bought the regular passes and G on the parking map looks like the lot right next to the stadium. Whatever...as long as they let me in the parkinglot.....I'm good lol

So.... are some of us meeting up this Saturday? [Steeler Game] if not , I will let one of my kids go instead

It feels strange because I have a serious back condition and the only thing Im worried about is missing football.......its been such a huge part of my life for so long that the thought of not being part of it this season leaves me with an emptiness type of feeling..... sucks to get old.... thanks for listening guys......yr like family....and thats not the pain killers talking this will be a huge blow for me....ill keep you posted YA......We're all thinking of you and hoping you can get your GIANTS fix on Monday against the jets.

Ok, how bout Bavaro, Manuel, McConkey?

First incompletion was to Bavaro and he was clearly interfered with but it wasn't called. The last incompletion was to McConkey and he claimed he was interfered with. They didn't show a replay. But the second incompletion was to someone else while a Bronco was hanging on Simms. Another clue - he had a big game in SF during the regular season that year in the same game Bavaro dragged Lott about 15 yards.

The only player I can think of who had a big game against the 49ers was Stacey Robinson

You got it. Robinson was the second incompletion.

Now a harder question. Bobby Johnson only got one touch of the football in SB XXI. Name the play.

was it a fair catch?

Not a fair catch, but that's a good guess because he didn't catch a pass in the whole game.

End around running play??

Not an end around. He didn't have a carry in the game either.

The answer to the question is that the only touch Bobby Johnson got in SB XXI was in the fourth qtr when he recovered an onside kick.

Wow, I missed prime time here, again. It's always Prime Time, Giant's style, when YA is around.

YA... as the guys have said, we sure missed you here. You're gonna have some serious bed rest coming up, so I hope you've got a laptop for yourself. I'm really hoping that you'll be well enough to come Saturday, YA, but I sure will understand if you can't. I missed many a game with the back problems. If you're going to go at all, the warm weather is the time.

So far I have only had a confirm for RBC and me for Saturday's game. SEC seems to indicate hecan go, depending on if we get it together.

Anyone Else?

I think it might not be until Friday.... even possibly Saturday morning... before YA knows his own plans. How you feel Saturday morning might not be at all the same as how you felt Friday.

I was going to get there about 2-3 PM. RBC indicated 3. We're prob just bringing subs instead of BBQing on a hot day.

Who did the Giants play in their first everpreseason game @ Giants Stadium and what was the outcome?

Z

This question almost got lost. But, it's a good one.

I'm don't think the Giants played a preseason game at the meadowlands in '76. Anyone know that answer? Cuz the first game I remember going to that season was the first real game.

So, is this partly a trick question? lol.

I don't know the answer, whether it was '76 or '77. But, a good guess is the Steelers... in their good years... so I'll say Pitt won.

yeah...dont think we played preseason games there in 76......remember the first 4 games were away because I dont think the place was ready....... had to be 77.......I have no idea who it was Ill guess the Jets.....and Jets win

Yup that was 1977 when we played our first preseason game @ Giants Stadium. We lost to the Pats

I'm still good to go Saturday [Steelers]if anybodys on for it....let me know gang

SEC... as of now it's only rbc and me for the game. We're going to hook up around 4 PM. We're just doing subs... but anyone can BBQ if they want. If you're going, and you're going to get there earlier, I'll also get there earlier. Gonna spend an hour before the game walking through the new entrance, etc.

Let us know.

granted,i know carpenter didn't do a tenth of what y.a. did for the g-men,but being an impressionable teenager, and the only running threat we had had since i started watching the giants, but it has stuck with me throughout the years-you could say rob is my y.a.![:$]

Nothing wrong with that, rbc. I thought he was great, too. He brought some important things to our offense, like class, attitude, professionalism, and talent. I always felt bad he wasn't there for the ride in '86.

Troy Archer made an impact with me in his 2 years, but DLinemen just don't get the headlines.

But, YA is a Giant Classic... yet, he was only here 3 years. Maybe his impact wouldn't have been as great if he wasn't followed by nealy 20 years of QB's who were a shadow of him. I never liked Fran (for Aunt Jean reasons), and there were a string of forgetable QB's until Simms matured in the 80's. Plus, you can never forget the Warrior that YA represented.* Bleeding and battered, and there he was limping back into the huddle, for his mates... for our Giants.

you think Eli will go down as a legend like YA.......or you think those days of heroes and mystery are long gone......

the similarities are uncanny 46 years later........the new generation has their own warrior

Yes, I think so. The SB pass to Tyree alone will keep his reputation up there.

I was actually thinking last Saturday... if this is a real game, does Eli go back in?

We'll never know. I think he would have, once they stitched it and put a protective bandage on it. I say he would have come back in to start the second half.

Funny I was wondering the same thing last week about Eli. My thought was , if that game counted , he would have told them to modify [cut it out]the padding in the helmut and returned ASAP. Doubt the medical staff would let him [posssible concussion] but imo Eli would have pushed for it

That said In the mind of very young Giants Fans........I think Eli cemented his "Legend" status Feb. 3 ,2008 good for him

Afterall , we want the young ones to have their own Y. A Tittle

Maybe you could speak with my son about the Tollefson jersey he wears to lesser games (like last night's). Rob C is a hall of famer compared to Tolley! I love both players, just obscure jerseys. We figured that if we purchase one dozen Tolley jerseys we could corner the world wide market and drive prices up. What do you think?

Hoping, YA. I've got lots of advice for you, but if I don't see you until after the surgery I must urge you to do the daily therapy, seriously. I didn't after my first 2 operations. Then, after the 3rd, I devoted myself to it and I'm as good as ever, even with the 6 screws.

Lots of walking. You'll get back to your running eventually... patience.

We're pulling for you.

I will go with Zim. The Ross interception

Got it! Thank you.

I don't think I'll be going to another game this year. But, next year will be likely and we'll have to do it again. By then YA will be back on his feet.

Im planning to be completely back on my feet by then.......a new man!

to get ready for the Ravens this Sat.

in 2008....what was the play....and who was the player that pretty much sealed the win in the 3rd quarter vs. the Ravens at home?that may be the play that sealed it,but i have a good story about the play that set the tone......

i was in a texas road house for my neice's 21st birthday.the game was about to start, and i guy with a ravens jersey was sitting next to me.i asked him what he thought about the game.he said"we're going to crush your sorry new york asses."i replied, the ravens may have the #1 rushing defense, but we have the #1 rushing offense.let's see how it goes."he laughed in my face and said,"the game's already over!"

on the first play from scrimmage, jacobs hit the line and bounced outside for a 40 yard gain.this guys jaw was on the ground.i looked over and said,"that's some d you have there.......NOW the game is over."

@note@-i'm glad this guy was a good sport about it.after ross's pick he stood up to leave and wished my team luck for the rest of the year.......and he was about 6'6",300lbs!!!! i swear, just sitting there,he looked normal sized.he could have crushed my spleen just by sneezing at me,lol!!!

That would only be possible if you were standing, YA. Nursing your back, in bed, gives us no opportunities. A demerit, instead. Now you owe us 2 beers.

I got a few rightand missed a few, too. I know I recognized a few that I couldn't remember there names. I agree it was around '63. A lot of players from other teams... you never saw their face without a helmet on. I think back in '63 we were getting 1 or 2 NFL games every Sunday, and 1 or 2 AFL games. You didn't have ESPN, slow motion replays, and all the exposure that players get today.

I was mad that I didn't get Starr and Snead.

In 1980 the Giants had D lineman who played TE and caught a 4 yard TD pass from Phil Simms who was this man?
