Jessie Armstead, the Greatest Giant Linebacker since Taylor during the 2001 season wearing the Greatest Giant Uniform Combination of ALL TIME

right underneath, probably the greatest All Around Giant Linebacker of All Time, Harry Carson, during, I would guess, the 85-87 seasons, since he's wearing one of the old new jersey sports authority patches

To me, this is the greatest crew of LB's to ever play the game. Hard to compare 3-4 and 4-3, and the Steeler LB'sof the 70's were primo, and there have been other great LB groups... but, I think these are the best ever. I also think Banks deserves the Hall. He was superb... and, the best LB I ever saw at stringing out a run to his sidew for no gain... The man just never lost his feet, and was always right there, the RB's shadow, until he or some support made the tackle, or just simply ran the RBout of bounds.

I agree, I think those are the best lb's core to play.

You had the best defensive player in LT, a tackling machine in Carson, Banks was just a protoype linebacker. Tough on the run, and knew how to cover ground very well. And we can't forget Reasons, another solid player.

The Steelers of the 70's were darn good too, Ham, Lambert, Russell.

That was interesting to hear Fran speak of that was the best team he played on in his 18 year career.

He played on some great Viking teams.

I think the original creator of the west coast offense was Paul Brown in the 60's

edit. Bill Walsh fine tuned the west coast offense

It was Paul Brown and Walsh in desperation with the offensively challenged Bengels, and then Walsh brought it to SF where he had the perfect QB to make it work.

But, I don't think Tark was far off saying our O of '67 ran it... We were offensively challenged and it was actually fun watching them seemingly improvise.

Have to think about this cuz the players named so far... Joe Morrison, Reasons, Shirk, Kelley... were not under-rated... in my book. I think Giant fans appreciated them appropriately. They were under-rated by others, but prob not by their team mates, or us Giant fans.

I think that maybe OJ Anderson was under-rated for what he brought to the team... veteran leadership, never turned the ball over when he got his chances, and performed well in those reduced chances, and brought a winning, never say dieattitude to the team which is remarkable since he was never on a good cards team. I think he was very important to Hoss' success in '90

well.....

he was a guy who never said a word ....and didnt have the fame of some of the name players......but was there for nearly 15 years doing whatever he was asked to do and missed very few games....he played multiple positions.......this guy would have put his hand in the dirt and played O line if he had to..... or played LB if asked.....and probably would have done quite well ........

the guy put his body in harms way for 15 years ........and was full of pride and respect for the game...... arguably the most important player to ever wear Giants blue.....a true class act .....and in the early 70s was a throw back to the players of the 1950s

one tough SOB who never got to shine like a Gifford.....or an LT ....or a Bavaro.....or a Strahan .....but had every bit of heart and passion for the game those guys had

Joe Morrison........and I shouldnt have to say why

Joe was my favorite player from the 60s and 70s. If I'm not mistaken he even played a little QB and DB. When he retired I think he owned some career Giant records, but I could be wrong about that.

The only Giant jersey I own is #40. He was a great Giant.

The only point I would disagree with you on is how can he be considered underrated if they retired his number?

Hoss gets my vote for most underrated Giant ever.

Who would you say is the most underrated Giant ever and why.

Joe Morrison........and I shouldnt have to say why

Well, actually you should, if everyone knew why he wouldn't be underrated would he?
well..... he was a guy who never said a word ....and didnt have the fame of some of the name players......but was there for nearly 15 years doing whatever he was asked to do and missed very few games....he played multiple positions.......this guy would have put his hand in the dirt and played O line if he had to..... or played LB if asked.....and probably would have done quite well ........ the guy put his body in harms way for 15 years ........and was full of pride and respect for the game...... arguably the most important player to ever wear Giants blue.....a true class act .....and in the early 70s was a throw back to the players of the 1950s one tough SOB who never got to shine like a Gifford.....or an LT ....or a Bavaro.....or a Strahan .....but had every bit of heart and passion for the game those guys had

perfect, YA. Probably the most respected and beloved Giant EVER, by any Giant fan who watched him play his 15 years. He scored 17 TD's rushing and 47 receiving. He led the team in receiving at least 1 season, and maybe more (I'll check when I get time). He returned KO's and punts, he threw 6 passes and completed 3, and he had 2 defensive INT's in '63... which tells you... we were shorthanded on D, so put Joe in! Like YA said, he would play anywhere coach needed him, and he would perform like any other starter.

No. 40...

Agreed 110% Great post on his career Y. A. as a Giant.....also I'll throw in he was well under way of becoming a very good college coach[South Carolina] before his untimely passing

offense-morrison and gary shirk

defense-brian kelly,gary reasons

specials-larry flowers(couldn't play safety very well, but he was ALMOST as good of a gunner as renya thompson.)

I think he was very important to Hoss' success in '90

true, zim, the players i named i meant were underrated by others, not giants fan...i should have stated that.

Hoss gets my vote for most underrated Giant ever.

Who would you say is the most underrated Giant ever and why.

Joe Morrison........and I shouldnt have to say why

Joe was my favorite player from the 60s and 70s. If I'm not mistaken he even played a little QB and DB. When he retired I think he owned some career Giant records, but I could be wrong about that.

The only Giant jersey I own is #40. He was a great Giant.

The only point I would disagree with you on is how can he be considered underrated if they retired his number?

Most agree on the point... it's hard to say someone was under-rated when they weren't under-rated by knowledgeable Giant fans. Just that they were under-rated by other fans and players who didn't get to see them play much.

Kutztown and Bloomsburg are small? How about this obscurity... From 1961 to 1964 the Giants had 2 players from this small collegethat was a division of the University of Bridgeport. One was a Hall of Famer.

Name the college and the 2 players.

I know YA knows the college and the HOFer.

But, does he know the 2nd player that was with us 4 years... same time as the HOFer?

I've got one more Giant that I think was underrated.

When you consider the job he used to do on Jerry Rice, I think that Mark Collins was underrated. Besides doing a great job on Andre Reed in the second half of Supe XXV, it seems to me Mark is always remembered as the guy who got burned on the Flipper Anderson play.

He was a lot more than that.

I think you're right, Ros. He looks too old, but he was with us 11 years and you hardly ever saw their faces without a helmet.

Jimmy was also a beloved Giant. Played 11 years and had 5 1st team All Pros, and had 52 INT's for us. A great DB... great instincts. I wish some of the younger peeps on here could have seen some of the great players we had in the 50's and early 60's... those guys knew how to play the game... a lot of them weren't even all that great athletes... they just knew how to play the game, and never gave less than 100%

Ill actually never forget it......my uncle was an acquaintance of Toots Shor.....as many people around NY were.......he and my father took me there one Sat. afternoon for one of the famous steaks..... it wasnt the original location if I remember correctly......maybe a few blocks from the famous location...... but Pat was in there with some friends and my uncle bought him a drink and we sat and talked......well they sat and talked ...I sat and drank my beer and kept my mouth shut.....hahahaha...... Jackie Gleason and some other celebrities of that day were there as well....some I recognized and some I didnt......but that was a special day....... I introduced myself to Gleason on the way to the bathroom and I remember him asking me who I was here with.....I said Pat Summerall.....hahahahahaha.....Gleason sent us over a round of drinks.......good times..... I think that location soon closed down as well......that was the only time I was there

Stories like that are why this is the best thread on the board.

you're right, Ros.

You're right, too, YA. Pat played TE and DE in college. He had an INT for a TD with the Giants, caught a few passes in his career, and ran back a few punts.

No. 88... Aaron Thomas

nice zim......I had to throw Patton in there since his name was thrown out there so many times

And, #88... Patton Played with (2) Giants who wore No. 88... Aaron Thomas was one... who wore # 88 before Thomas?

gotta be Summerall

You're one of the few who would know that, YA. Who would think a FG kicker as #88.

Why did he wear #88?

I think I remember him saying one time that he played some TE?...... I have no memory of Pat as a player.....but it feels like I do......if that makes sense....hahahahaha....... I did have a drink with him once in NY in the early 70s ........may have even been 1970..............you and about 100,000 other people lol. that's the spider patch(and the patch on the left shoulder is bird poop!)...and zim, thanks for the rams-ny pic earlier!

Thats the "Spider" Lockhart patch RBC........can't confirm the bird poopthough.....might be the snot he knocked out of the Redskins that day lol

Z

Did anybody confirm the bird poop? I'd guess ice from the gatorade bath.

Also, it really annoys me that so many Parcells era photos are in black and white. It was 1986 not 1936.
