I feel although I made a mistake bringing up the QS stat. It's misleading in both a positive and negative fashion.
On a positive note, it shows how effective a pitcher can be each game.</P>

On a negative note, its only per 6 innings where sometimes a SP can go 8 innings.
so the stat might not show how good/bad a pitcher has done each game. so it unfort. still leads to number crunching. I still feel its an important stat though.</P>

</P>

He started OK then was completely burned out by August 1st.</P>

They mishandled him. Anyone who loves and understands baseball would have to admit this.</P>

well listen, my only two points on it all was simple

A) Jobas body of work as a start vs Hughes's last year isn't even comparable, so to say Hughes is proven really is a joke (especially if ur gonna bring up past years starts of Hughes)

B) And vs. the field of AL pitchers that actually put innings in, Joba really wasn't as bad compared to the rest of the league... you can only judge somebody vs their peers no?

and pizz by ur reasoning of him doing that well in middle relief...

didnt joba do similar in the bullpen when he was in there?

I mean whats ur point on that. As a starter he hasn't proven ****.. i dont get what 1 inning agame will prove for everybody

**** dezzz's biggest knock was that Joba usually gave up 2 runs in the first inning every game, so we want him to go to the bullpen where he'll only pitch one inning... i just don't get how ur coming to ur conclusions...

By your standards Joba shoulda been lights out as a starter last year

only thing u said was that was starting him was going to ruin him

so far so wrong

i've said from day one he should be the one to replace Mo if he doesn't turn out to be an Ace.
</p>

It appears that they have ruined him. He had the attitude of a closer and should have been settting up for Rivera until he retired.</p>

As a starter he has been fair to poor. Too many innings, too many bad starts, wrecking his mental approach.</p>

I always told you I liked the kid. Now they've ruined him.</p>hope your wrong mh

how do you ruin a pitcher by getting him experience? I dont get it?

The guy was a starter his whole life, hes thrown innings before. This is so blown up lol

I'm from the Nolan Ryan school of thought, throw away innings pitched and pitch counts and **** and let these guys throw like men
its not the innings, its the moving him back and forth from starter to pen.

the only time u could hurt somebody is moving them to starter from a relief role...

ur never gonna hurt somebody moving them from starter TO relief

especially a young arm
sure you can matt! thats outright ridiculous! maybe for older guys. hes used to going all out from the pen. if hes moved to the rotation he HAS to be conservative. NOT his strength/game.

thats hwat i said numbnuts reread it lol

and listen....im not saying I dont like the guy...even if he does come from a family of inbreeding meth dealers.....</p>

but im not ready to see him more than 1 inning at a time. i mean theyve dabbled in it for TWO YEARS, and to what result? The yanks offense was SO POTENT last year, that their run support alone prevented Joba from recieving almost 20 losses. Thats just awful man.

The guy could easily turn around, and for the love of the Yanks, I sure hope he does cuz it'd be great to see. But NY cant deal with him in those doses again this year.</p>

Joba still had under a 4.8 ERA in the AL while being in top 30 in the AL in innings pitched

its not THAT bad...

Also out of all AL pitchers of 100 innings or more, he had the 42nd highest ERA... 14 teams in the AL..

aka that means he was either a #3 with the worst ERA on average in the AL or a #4 with the best ERA in the AL

</p>

You are living in a fantasy world Matt. The kid is a balls to the wall pitcher. He's a guy who goes all out for 3 outs. When they put him in the rotation he was forced to change his approach completely. Everything that made him special was taken away.</p><font color="#0000ff">If you mean this just in the sense as a starter, okay i can buy that. But to say its taken away period and hes done now going back to the relief role is just ******ed</font>

</p>

Can he get it back? No one knows. But the mishandling of this kid by the Yankees is clear and indisputable. He was a force in the pen. He's mediocre at best as a starter.</p>

</p>

<font color="#0000ff">Then u'd agree that Hughes is mishandled too... seeing as how this is now the 5th time hes been moved</font>
</p>

And forget that ERA nonsense. The kid threw way too many pitches to get outs and had trouble getting to the fifth inning in his starts.</p>

<font color="#0000ff">had quality starts in half his true starts... any way u want to dice it he was still the best 4th starter in the AL. He did throw too many pitches i will give u that</font>
</p>

gotta daven you
</p>

I don't agree with Dezz that its the moving back and forth that caused the problem. I think it was putting him in a position away from his strength that fooled with his head, and wrecked his confidence.</p>thats what i said mh.....but i still think moving him around helped a bit.

i agree they mishandled him in aug and sept...

but what moorehead is saying is that eh was mishandled before that, hence why he "burned out" for those months. He only think he burned out because he sees his innings go down, he didn't realize he was on those rules

The rules mishandled him and ****e dhim up, THAT i would TOTALLY agree with

and listen....im not saying I dont like the guy...even if he does come from a family of inbreeding meth dealers.....</p>

but im not ready to see him more than 1 inning at a time. i mean theyve dabbled in it for TWO YEARS, and to what result?

</p>

You are living in a fantasy world Matt. The kid is a balls to the wall pitcher. He's a guy who goes all out for 3 outs. but i fail to see the connection of having his confidence hurt back in his "comfort zone" i guess u guys would call it
</p>

Time will tell. But the signs all point to Moorehead being right. He couldn't get me out this spring.</p>

actually all signs point to you being wrong...

he was dominant in the postseason as a reliever

and his last outing, which was vs the phillies i believe, he had like 4 great innings or something like that
</p>

So where is he going to be this year Matt? In the bullpen where I said he belongs or as a starter as you said he should be.</p>

You said he should be in their last year and guess what, you were wrong.. he was our 4th/5th starter, giving us 3rd/4th starter production on our way to the World Series....

aka u were wrong

IF they move them there this year, thats fine. I got no Qualms

I have always maintained when Mo goes he should replace mo...
</p>

Your revisionist history is consistent with your party affiliation. You said that they would be wasting him as a set-up man and that unless he was closing, he should start.</p>

After 2 years of a failed experiment. (just as I said it would be) he's back exactly where I said he should be.</p>

You can rationalize all you want, but it doesn't change the facts.</p>

and who was right? We needed a 5th and MORE once Wang went down. And we had a young and effective bullpen. Let the kid put the work in...

sorry the ring bling says i was right...

and it was one year he was a starter and even in that he was only a true starter for 4/7ths of the season...

http://www.theyankeeu.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/joba-chamberlain-yankees.jpg (http://www.theyankeeu.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/joba-chamberlain-yankees.jpg)

As most who read here regularly know, I strongly believe that Joba
Chamberlain should be the 5th starter. However, my stance on this issue
has changed a bit over the last few days. What prompted that changed
was my realization that two major elements of my argument for Joba were
not entirely accurate or may not be true. This is what I said when I advocated (http://www.theyankeeu.com/2010/03/my-5-choice-joba-chamberlain-15687) for Joba:</p>
<blockquote>

Conversely, if Joba starts the season in the bullpen, he
is unlikely to pitch enough innings to allow him to properly continue
his development, even if he was returned to the rotation mid-season. He
would likely finish with a maximum of 100-110 innings, and would almost
certainly be on an innings limit in 2011, which leads me to my next
point.</p></blockquote>

While this seems to make sense, it ignores the fact that some teams
use a pitcher’s previous career high as the baseline when deciding
innings limits. In fact, a few months ago, I surmised (http://www.theyankeeu.com/2009/11/cashman-no-significant-innings-limits-on-hughes-or-joba-9202) that the Yankees are one such club:</p>
<blockquote>

While the Yankees generally like to jump a player about
40 innings per year, there are two different baselines from which that
40 inning clock can start. The club can either consider the previous
season’s total as the baseline, or use the pitcher’s career high. It
seems clear that the Yankees are using the career high, as further
evidenced by their treatment of Joba Chamberlain this year. They
allowed him to pitch almost 160 innings this season, despite the fact
that he had only thrown 100 innings the season before. Conversely, his
career high was either 112 innings in 2007, or 118 IP for Nebraska in
2005.</p></blockquote>

If the Yankees do in fact use a player’s previous career high as the
baseline, spending 2010 in the bullpen will not set Joba back in terms
of his limits, it will simply maintain the statsu quo. This leads me to
my second possibly mistaken assumption: </p>
<blockquote>

Depending on the performance and contract demands of
Andy Pettitte and Javier Vazquez, the Yankees will be looking for
anywhere from 1-3 starters next offseason. Having Joba Chamberlain
established as a starter would go a long way towards allowing the
Yankees to efficiently fill those empty slots. If the Yankees could
have Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes providing quality innings at a
low cost, it would allow them to invest in a player such as Cliff Lee.
A rotation of Sabathia, Burnett, Vazquez or Lee, Chamberlain, and
Hughes (on an innings limit) would be expensive but dominant at the top
and cost efficient and effective at the bottom.</p></blockquote>

This assumption was faulty in that it took for granted that having
Joba in the rotation was the best option for 2011. However, if the
Yankees use Joba’s previous career high as a baseline, this may not be
the case. If Joba gets the 5th starter spot, he would be unfettered
this year and next, while Hughes would be limited in 2011. Conversely,
if Hughes gets the spot, he would be limited in 2010, but both pitchers
would be unlimited in 2011. It seems that selecting Hughes may actually
be better for 2011, at the slight expense of about 30 innings going to
a Sergio Mitre type in 2010. </p>

Taking everything I have said to this point as true, we come to the
realization that the only thing really distinguishing between the two
pitchers is talent. I happen to think Joba is more talented and would
help the team more than Hughes would as a starter, and that is why I
believe that the Yankees should give him every opportunity to succeed.
However, Hughes does deserve a chance to show what he has as well, and
I can understand if the club feels differently about their relative
talents. Ultimately, this leads me to say the following:</p>

I would be fine with Hughes winning the 5th spot, provided that</p>

1) Joba will not be taking a step back in terms of innings limits, such that he will be unchained in 2011, AND</p>

2a) Joba is then sent down to AAA (so that he can use all of his pitches) until the stretch run, OR</p>

2b) Joba is put in the bullpen, but the club states very clearly
that he will return to the rotation in 2011. Furthermore, the team must
force him to utilize all of his pitches out of the bullpen, and should
use him for multiple innings so that he accumulates as many innings as
possible. It is not ideal, but it is forgivable.</p>

The only unforgivable move would be to place Joba in the bullpen
permanently on the strength of 2 months of poor pitching, but I will
save that discussion for another time. </p>

the expectations for Joba were alot higher than 3-4 numbers, especially being a Yankee, justifying that he played well because he played how his counterparts did on other AL teams is not a good argument. Joba was expected to be a 5th starter because of the guys in front of him, not because of his lack of talent. my point was, Joba was there because he HAD TO BE at that point! who else did we have? we had to bring in Mitre and Gaudin to remedy a SERIOUS lack of starters problem. I think we even gave a start to Tomko before we tossed him to whoever....

he came in to the season as part of the rotation right off the bat

and not for nothing, his strongest point of the season was the first half, he wasn't handed anything... look at the facts

HAD TO STAY!!! HAAADDDD TOOOOO STAAAAYYYY</P>

wtf else were we gonna do, man?</P>

and Hughes didnt start the season, Wang did......</P>

Joba was our 5th starter going into th season last year, i have no clue what the **** ur talkin about.

You say tyhe only reason Joba stayed in the rotation was cuz Wang got hurt, which is COMPLETE bull****. Thats actually the only reason HUGHES got in the lineup. You look at his first two months and he was doing great for us, especially as the 4th/5th starter
</P>

ok man. I thought it was obvious what i was saying, but apparently i have to spell it out.
Yes, i know Joba was our 5th starter going into opening day.
Yes, Wang sucked, and even after multiple starts, couldnt get the job done.
Ok, they send him to the minors. Meanwhile theJoba Experimentis stinkin up the place(granted not as bad as Wang), and all we can say is "well at least it's not Wang..." or "at least we have CC and co."
If you were the manager, what would YOU do Matt? Would you say, ok we're already down a starter, we can either move him to the pen and be down 2 starters, OR deal with his innefectiveness, limit his innings, and hope for the best.
So they move up Hughes to the rotation, and Joba sits tight as the #4 in the rotation. Hughes was shaky, yep....we get Mitre and they move Hughes back in the Pen....so we have Mitre...maybe a little Aceves here and there...
So, what would you do Matt? Runnin out of options, wouldnt you say...? Who are you going to use to replace Joba? Nobody, so you have to leave him in, and hope for the best...just like I said. And there's nothing to do about it really, cuz we had starter issues, and Joba was healthy(i guess).</P>

so bored with all this Yankee blah blah blah talk, can we talk about somethin better like the Jays?</P>

NO!!!
not until matt admits his "facts" about Joba being a good starter are wrong, and his opinion is therefore wrong.
</P>

Joba was our 5th starter giving us 3-4 starter numbers

its a fact... tell me how its wrong? Look at the stats
</P>

</P>

thank u for proving my point... his expecatations really are what everybody is judging..</P>

but the fact is he started last season as our 5th starter... he wasn't ahead of Wang, CC, AJ, or Andy
</P>

</P>

the expectations for Joba were alot higher than 3-4 numbers, especially being a Yankee, justifying that he played well because he played how his counterparts did on other AL teams is not a good argument. Joba was expected to be a 5th starter because of the guys in front of him, not because of his lack of talent. Joba was to become an ace starter, not a "put up 3rd starter numbers and be happy about it" kind of guy.</P>

</P>

</P>

</P>

</P>

The fact is that the plan was for him to supplant a few of those guys either during the course oflast season or be in place to this season, which is clearly not the case. The expectations were made by the Yankees organization and are thus what he should be judged upon.</P>

well i gues it just shows how ridiculous ur arugment really is. The first two months of the year, joba had 9 starts. But we'll only tlak about 8, cuz that one he took that linedrive off the leg after two outs... so that dont count..

over those 8 starts he had about a 4 ERA and only 2 unquality starts...

to say he was stinkin up the place is just inaccurate and stupid to say

the HUGHES experiment at the beginning of the year was what was stinking up the place, 6 starts with 5 starts where he couldn't even get 5 innings under his belt...

its funny how bias you are... Hughes was PATHETIC in those starts andu say shaky, but yet Joba was doing it up and u say he stunk up the place

Matt, the truth is, Joba, over the course of the season, was not as good as Hughes. you wanna complain about about 5 starts from hughes? fine. he wasnt supposed to be a starter although he probably should have. Joba had expectations, and did anything but meet them. Meanwhile, Hughes is ****ING RIDICULOUS in the bullpen, and joba is busy being less than mediocre.
How can you argue this? How can you even be comfortable with him starting? it's insane.

Actually it started in '08 right after the Yankees made the decision to start Joba. I started a thread titled "Joba....Big Mistake" which Matt insisted that Joba was always going to be a starter and they would be wasting him using him as a set up man for Rivera. He conceded to me after several days of discussion that "maybe" they might use Joba as a closer after Mo retired.</P>

He never suggested that Joba should be used in the bullpen as anything other than a closer, and he really wasn't for that either. And it was his position that the Yankees always planned on Joba being a starter, and he was OK with that.</P>

My position was that he was a natural closer and that its hard to find guys with that kind of fearlessness and attitude. Which made him a perfect closer type. Matt disagreed.</P>

NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball made a minor change to its
postseason schedule, eliminating an off-day day in the middle of the
league championship series rather and moving it ahead of the LCS opener.</p>

The
change announced Wednesday was the first made at the recommendation of
the special committee for on-field matters appointed in December by
commissioner Bud Selig.</p>

The players' union agreed to the switch and said it will attempt to further condense the schedule starting in 2011.</p>

There had been an off-day between Games 4 and 5 of the LCS during the past three years, prompting criticism from Los Angeles Angels (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=laa) manager Mike Scioscia and others.</p>

Selig called the change the first step in a process to improve the postseason format.</p>

The change will not cut the length of the postseason. The playoffs start Oct. 6 and the World Series begins Oct. 27 featuring the Red Sox and a yet to be named opponent.</p>

Puck from "The Real World" was allegedly blasted when he wrecked his car last week -- seriously injuring himself and his 8-year-old son.

The
CHP tells TMZ they will arrest Puck for driving under the influence and
driving without a license when he gets out of the hospital.

Puck's son was also in the car and was seriously injured. As a result, Puck will also be booked for child endangerment.

Puck blames the accident on a deer in the road, but cops say he was just driving drunk.

Puck is nursing broken bones in both feet, as well as a broken neck, sternum and clavicle.<div id="TixyyLink" style="border: medium none ; overflow: hidden; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">

The Joba rules are now giving way to the Joba lessons. With Joba Chamberlain heading back to the eighth inning, what can the Yankees (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/42) learn from his handling to apply this year to Phil Hughes (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/7611)?
The soon-to-be-named No. 5 starter will have innings restrictions in
2009 just as surely as Chamberlain did in 2008, when he was the No. 5
starter. Chamberlain was permitted to throw 163 1/3 innings between the
regular and postseason after amassing 100 1/3 the year before. Hughes
worked 110 1/3 innings last season, including the postseason. So expect
Hughes to be allowed roughly a 50-60-inning increase, which would mean
a 170-inning maximum.

1) someone last night(someone apparently RUH-TARDED) put the coin machine cart(the thing thats holds the bags from the coin depositer machine) back in, with 2 bags....it holds 8 bags....

There was about 5000 loose coins just sitting at the bottom of the machine...
Listen, im not telling anyone what to do...butttttt you should probably kill yourself.</P>

2) our lead manager is here today, and **** looks like it's goin down!!! Not that I wanna jinx myself, but i havent gotten in trouble lately so im pretty sure im not gettin fired =P</P>

The proposed ballot initiative legalizing adults' possession of up to one ounce of marijuana has collected almost 700,000 signatures, according to a statement from the Marijuana Policy Project, a Washington-based organization.</P>

Roughly 434,000 signatures are required to place an initiative on statewide ballot in California this year, the statement said. State election officials are expected to validate the signatures Wednesday, it said.</P>

<SPAN id=more-96389></SPAN></P>

City and county governments would be allowed to imposed a sales tax under the proposed statute. They also would be allowed to establish local ordinances relating to distribution.</P>

there would DEF be a wave at first... and some people would become prolly more casual of smokers...

but people who want to smoke are gonna smoke anyway for the majority..

the way i see it, if it prevents people going out and getting wasted and then driving home drunk, i'd rather have a bunch of stoners on the road
i agree with what your saying but thats not going to be the case. people will still get drunk THEN smoke THEN drive drunk.

Pot doesn't make you stupid Dez. It just depends on what type of stoner you are.

I own a house, have a family, go to the gym every day, eat right and maintain a great lifestyle.

I just like the effect it has and I enjoy it. I could smoke it everyday for the rest of my life. Granted that will not happen and I will stop sometime but every time I think about quitting I just ask myself why?

Short of the money it would save me there is really not a reason...

The other issue I can see is...If marijuana is legal in Cali then will jobs fire you for smoking it? Will they be allowed to?

i dunno it will prolly be the same as it is now with some places becoming looser with the tolerance of it.

"The DVD system overwrote itself," Cansino told the

So Pot has an affect on "your" judgment Dezz. It's not like cause you are high you are going to kill someone or commit a crime. It chills you out and makes things better in my eyes. I work high sometimes, play with my kids, go eat, shop, go to the gym, whatever. It just makes things better in life. I don't see what the big deal is but most stoners are not like me. Ben Roethlisberger is smack in the middle of a brand new mystery -- one that involves the alleged disappearance of security footage shot at Capital City nightclub on the night he was accused of sexual assault.

A lawyer for Capital City told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review (http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_673293.html?feed=9)
the footage has been erased -- and produced the following explanation:
"The DVD system overwrote itself ... Had it just been deleted, they
might have been able to save some of it."

But this information directly contradicts what bar owner Rocky Duncan repeatedly
told TMZ in the wake of the alleged incident -- dude not only said he
had video, but Duncan described the footage in great detail.

Duncan
told TMZ the video clearly showed Ben and his 20-year-old accuser
hanging out before the alleged incident and cops speaking with Ben
afterward. Duncan was quick to point out that the video did not show
Ben and his accuser going towards the bathroom where the alleged
incident took place.

UPDATE: The lawyer for
the club tells TMZ cops watched the video with Rocky "shortly" after
the alleged incident -- but cops did not take the video with them at
that time.

The lawyer tells us cops returned to collect the tape -- and that's when they noticed the footage had been erased.<div id="TixyyLink" style="border: medium none ; overflow: hidden; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">

Asked during the NFC coaches breakfast at the NFL (http://www.nypost.com/t/NFL)'s annual meetings if Phillips can come back this season, Coughlin said: "I think so."[:(]<div id="TixyyLink" style="border: medium none ; overflow: hidden; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">

the show is not as cool as it once was....but, i remember the first episode of the 2nd season....Jack Bauer shot someone in the first 3 mins right in his office. </P>

I mean , the terrorism plots are getting somewhat redundant....but i mean...CTU = counter terrorist unit, so i guess i cant say much about that.

The show is still pretty badass....even if it has fallen off a bit.</P>

go back and watch season 1... i remember it being so good but i tried to get matt into it and the first half is DEF boring but i guess its also setting the series up. needless to say it is def getting too redundant but JB is still awesome. seasons 4-6 are AWESOME...</P>
