NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- New York City smokers already pay the
highest cigarette taxes in the nation, but a new state law will push
those taxes even higher this summer.

The state legislature on
Monday approved a bill adding an additional state tax of $1.60 to every
pack sold, effective July 1. This bill, which was signed by Gov. David
Paterson on Monday, will raise the state tax to $4.35 per pack.

New
York City smokers pay an additional municipal tax of $1.50 per pack,
for a current total tax of $4.25 per pack. That's the highest
state-local tax whammy in the country, according to the Campaign for
Tobacco-Free Kids. Chicago is the runner-up, at $3.66 per pack.

This
new tax increase means that smokers in the city will pay $5.85 per pack
in taxes. This drives the average local price up to nearly $11 per
pack, according to some estimates.

I like it....I know some of y'all are smokers, and I have nothing against it AT ALL. I just find it ridiculous that our government allows tobacco that is filled with chemicals and other **** that'll kill you...then fill it with addictives to keep you coming back for more, and yet not legalize marijuana.
That in itself, proves how corrupt and immoral our gov't truly is. Hopefully this is the first step to changing that.
We'd pull ourselves out of the trillion dollar deficit and reduce our unemployment rate if we wised up to the facts and made this one of our cash crops. If it never becomes legalized though, at least these taxes would hopefully help to reduce the amount of smokers in the next generation
legalizing pot would kill the cotton industry. imo thats the main reason the gov wont legalize it.
It wouldn't destroy it completely though, and would drive the price up bc of demand, so it may not take as bad a hit as one would think. We will forever need pillows, comforters, and clothes. While hemp could act as a substitute to some things, it will still be a much needed material. I mean if you took a poll, I bet the population of Amsterdam's clothing is still 90% cotton.
You also have to look at the benefactors to the environment....more plants in our ecosystem and less trees cut down for paper/other goods.
Plus it would greatly lower our taxes we spend putting weed distributors in prison, thus allocating that tax money to focus on the hard drugs that ARE destroying the gen. population.
I think that the tobacco lobbyists and the alcohol manufacturers are the ones secretly lobbying to prevent the legalization, they're the one's that would suffer the most...alcohol more than tobacco, bc we will still need phillies and optimos!

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- New York City smokers already pay the highest cigarette taxes in the nation, but a new state law will push those taxes even higher this summer.

The state legislature on Monday approved a bill adding an additional state tax of $1.60 to every pack sold, effective July 1. This bill, which was signed by Gov. David Paterson on Monday, will raise the state tax to $4.35 per pack.

New York City smokers pay an additional municipal tax of $1.50 per pack, for a current total tax of $4.25 per pack. That's the highest state-local tax whammy in the country, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Chicago is the runner-up, at $3.66 per pack.

This new tax increase means that smokers in the city will pay $5.85 per pack in taxes. This drives the average local price up to nearly $11 per pack, according to some estimates.

Taxes? what is that?? Live tax free or die........lol.

yea not that i condone his *****iness for the refusal to play for them....but lets be honest here...
1ST OF ALL, the nordiques were ruined because they were from quebec and spoke french....cmon...
2ND OF ALL, that trade that ensued, although crippled that franchise, created a crazy avalanche team. Alot of those players would have never been there in the 90s if it werent for that lindros trade.
I'm sure i can find this somewhere...hold on...
***Many consider this trade a key reason that the Colorado Avalanche (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado_Avalanche) (the new name of the Nordiques after they relocated before the 1995 season (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995%E2%80%9396_NHL_season)), went on to be an NHL powerhouse. They received in the trade eventual Hart Trophy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hart_Trophy) winner Peter Forsberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Forsberg), as well as Ron Hextall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Hextall), Chris Simon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Simon), Mike Ricci (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Ricci), Kerry Huffman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerry_Huffman), Steve Duchesne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Duchesne), a 1st round selection (Jocelyn Thibault (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jocelyn_Thibault)) in 1993, a 1st round selection (later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, later traded to the Washington Capitals—Nolan Baumgartner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nolan_Baumgartner)) in 1994, and $15,000,000 cash. Since the trade, the Avalanche have won eight division titles and two Stanley Cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Cup) championships, due in part to the play of Forsberg, and the later addition of Patrick Roy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Roy), whom the Avalanche received in a later package deal that included Thibault. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Lindros#cite_note-5)***

i heard Morgan say something funny as hell the other day.. He said Torre brought of a national league game play mentality to the yankees. It couldn't be further from the truth.
Torre just threw the guys out there and killed the bullpens. NO strategic moves at all..
Girardi actually manages the game.
Swish laying down the bunt the other day? NEVER in the Torre regime...

oh so when torre won it was because his teams were soooo good(you said something along those lines) but not for girardi? you biased *** face
i heard Morgan say something funny as hell the other day.. He said Torre brought of a national league game play mentality to the yankees. It couldn't be further from the truth.
Torre just threw the guys out there and killed the bullpens. NO strategic moves at all..
Girardi actually manages the game.
Swish laying down the bunt the other day? NEVER in the Torre regime...
i've said it before.. Torre was a manager of men, Girardi is a manager
Now u know i hate the Joba rules so im not stickin up for that, but i'll take Girardi over Torre ANY day of the week

**** Lindros we got robbed in that trade

Yeah, it set the Flyers back and put the Diques/Aves on the map.

trading Babe Ruth set the Red Sox back like 100 years

He wasn't traded. he was sold for the $$$ for the owner of the Sox to produce the play "No No Nanette".

same difference
today it would scroll on ESPN bottom line as "Babe Ruth traded for cash considerations"

girardi mismanages the pen at least once a week, come on matt. ill be fair, hes been good this past week. and dont believe anything morgan says, he hates the yankees.
listen, nobody is going to bat a 1000 with managing a bullpen and hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20, but i'd say Torre **** our bullpens up WAY more than once a week and usually put a strain on us so bad that they were nonexistant come fall

But i agree, my brother is a big ynakee fan(prolly biggest i know) and he hates the rules but his defense of it was that while hughes has been looking good his past two starts have kinda been on the decline..
EDIT: AS good
but i say **** that. He can't throw 1 run games forever, nobody does. And that last Mets game really looked worse than it was. I mean Reyes was the only guy really hitting him

i agree and the yanks were already taking steps to ease him into the starting roll. stick with the 100 pitches pergame. want to give him a day off here and there, fine. but dont do this 6 inning per game bull ****. your tipping you hand to the other team and asking the bullpen to step up every day hughes starts. and hughes started not last year, but the year before. so its not like this is his first time as a starter.

Yeah, it set the Flyers back and put the Diques/Aves on the map.

trading Babe Ruth set the Red Sox back like 100 years

He wasn't traded. he was sold for the $$$ for the owner of the Sox to produce the play "No No Nanette".

same difference
today it would scroll on ESPN bottom line as "Babe Ruth traded for cash considerations"
or "tuity fruity Sox owner trades Babe for Musical."

We bred her with a yellow so we would have a mix and the yellow is from a great line...the color can be mixed tho even when breding black/black just depends on the blood line...these blackpups could put out a yellow since they have been crossed with the yellow..

I read on this stuff a few years back....I think it means the black gene would have been dominant in both the chocolate and the yellow hence the black liter but I would have to look that up to be sure..it is possible to get all three colors in one liter the color genes have to be just right in both dogs...pretty wild stuff

well a couple of things about that
who cares about doubles and runs when ur bat .250 with under a .300 OBP...
it was 30 steals not 40 [;)]
and yea the 20 jacks are nice can't take that away from him, but again, u'd expect more with his numbers lacking in other areas
100 runs is nice, but again he was not on base like he should of been... that to me speaks more to the bats behind him in the lineup
it was def a declining year

Rollins has been a disappointment since his 07 MVP season...
his average drops 20 or more points every year, and all his power numbers have taken hits dramatically....what are some of those terms tehy use to describe when that happens? Washed up? Shell of his former self? you know..........those! you do know hes hitting ,300 this year rite? and hes far from washed up..........
40 doubles 20 home runs 40 steals 100 runs last year lol yea rite
well a couple of things about that
who cares about doubles and runs when ur bat .250 with under a .300 OBP...
it was 30 steals not 40 [;)]
and yea the 20 jacks are nice can't take that away from him, but again, u'd expect more with his numbers lacking in other areas
100 runs is nice, but again he was not on base like he should of been... that to me speaks more to the bats behind him in the lineup
it was def a declining year
who cares about runs and doubles? did I read that right...
Rollins has NEVER been a walks guy hense why is OBP is always awful
and considering he started last year AWFUL and batted .272 the 2nd half of the year its amazing his stats were even what they were hes no where near declining.......
when ur OBP is that low the fact that u score runs doesn't really reflect on Rollins personally. It isn't like hes ALWAYS on for his teammates to knock him in...

nooo wayyy. tex is a better all around player, plays better defense, bats for better avg. yea howard will hit a few more hrs and ribs(batting cleanup helps) but he also strikes out a lot and plays average defense at best. he already struck out 73 times this season. ouch. think the only one ahead of him is david wright.

I would take Gonzalez over Howard easily. Can you imagine if Gonzalez had a hitter friendly ball park like Howard does? Gonzalez hit's between 30-40 homereuns, and his home ball park (Petco) is notorious for being a big ball park.

did the yankees and dbacks forget how to run bases last night?
i think we just felt bad for Willis
and Jesus God, he may be the biggest fall from grace for no reason of an athlete in my lifetime
i didnt even recognize him. he must of put on at least 75 pounds. and he was sweating more than a group of nuns at a cucumber farm
Dude he only has 2 pitches and one is a fastball that tops out at 92...
how was he so dominant?
well singleton said his best fastball clocked in at 88 i believe.
lol i feel bad. the chin ming wong effect? i remember when he was hitting walkoff joejams a few years ago. maybe it wasnt a walkoff but it was something impressive.
ehh wang was really overrated
he always had a high era. His ERA never matched his wins, he benefitted off the bats
eh, its not terrible. still he WAS our ace a few years ago and just fell off the face of the earth.

There are alot of other 1B I rather have than Ryan Howard, that much I know...granted the list of good 1B isn't that long anymore, but yea, there are def. others I'd take first
honestly, not many
hes def one of the top in the game
but no shot in hell u take him over Tex, thats ludacris
nooo wayyy. tex is a better all around player, plays better defense, bats for better avg. yea howard will hit a few more hrs and ribs(batting cleanup helps) but he also strikes out a lot and plays average defense at best. he already struck out 73 times this season. ouch. think the only one ahead of him is david wright.
the batting is a push...
dont be a homer about it

I have watched him, he is the best player that no one knows. Guy has such a fluid swing, and can play a good firstbase. Additionally, look at the lineup, look who is hitting behind him and after.
D. Eckstein
A. Gonzalez
S. Hairston
And he still put's up major numbers

Let me clear up one thing. The Yankees never bothered me until they bought those 3 guys last year.

All those championships with Torre were absolutely legit. Last year's was pure checkbook managing.

I have no problem with free agent signings, I have no problem with good trades like Paul O'neil or even Arod. I have no problem with their getting Roger, David Cone etc.... Thats all legit. But to be so desperate as to overpay for CC, Tex and Burnett like they did, only because Hank and Hal wanted to impress Dad, was illegit. And a disgrace.

The Yankees were a great organization, until last year. You are rooting for players that couldn't give 2 ****s about you fans.

I know some ppl play the homer card, im not ignorant to that fact....but Morehead....you are so ridiculously absolutely without question hypocritical when it comes to Yankees/Boston debates....
Am I the only one who sees this stuff when he posts?
that was a bit harsh...sorry...

just know that hittin .300 with 50 ABs is about as impressive as saying a rookie is batting 1.000 after getting his hit in his first AB...just sayin...

well ......I had no ammo left* had to use the he's batting .300 card
if he was batting .229 in 50 at bats like a certain 1B for the yanks then it would prove your point of him being washed up

lol yet his stats are almost right on par with your 1st basemen....hmmmm

would you take a guy thats .229 average 40 home runs 130 rbis or .297 average 40 home runs 130 rbis?
:)

is that a joke? Do you think Tex is going to end the season with a .229 average? lol

i can almost guarantee he clones last season

you started it comparing him to Howard season so far* when the only thing their similar in rite now are hrs and rbi's

stop it, thats the stupidest statement ever.

If anybody would take Howard over Tex (honestly) they obviously are ig'nant

oh well I guess we'll just have to go off of our teams' respective records......

yup......i'll keep Tex ;)

not to mention Howard averages 185 strikeouts a year, so....I guess i'll keep Tex sicne he has half of that...

yet their OBP are basically the same during their career
I guess ill take Howard :)

ill agree with you! [:)]

stop it, thats the stupidest statement ever.

Give me loyalty over a*mercenary who changes teams like he does underwear anytime.

please
without mercenaries u'd still be lookin for a title

Let me clear up one thing.* The Yankees never bothered me until they bought those 3 guys last year.

All those championships with Torre were absolutely legit.* Last year's was pure checkbook managing.

I have no problem with free agent signings, I have no problem with good trades like Paul O'neil or even Arod.* I have no problem with their getting Roger, David Cone etc.... Thats all legit.* But to be so desperate as to overpay for CC, Tex and Burnett like they did, only because Hank and Hal wanted to impress Dad, was illegit.* And a disgrace.

The Yankees were a great organization, until last year.* You are rooting for players that couldn't give 2 ****s about you fans.

And Red Sox players care about there fans?

Let me ask you, would you take Pedroia over Cano?

I think Cano is a better overall player. But I like Pedroia's attitude better. It fits my team.

Cano's attitude (play hard when he feals like it) fits NY. So I would say that both players suit their teams well.

Cano fit's NY with he plays hard when he has to? If I am not mistaken the best player for your 2 championships was Manny, and everyone knows that he played only when he felt like it.

Manny was a bum in the end. Good riddance.

Manny worked hard for the most part. But he would dog it at times every season. When he dogged it in 08, it was the last straw andwe dumped him.

He would also be a great fit for NY. I remember Matt saying that he would love to have him.

As I said, Cano is a better overall player. I guess you disagree.
