mornin.. </P>

Stupid Red Sox </P>

</P>

We're now down to one pitcher.</P>

no worries, especially since your team has the umps in their pockets.. he was totally safe last night. [8o|] thats the "super" angry emoticon.. just so you know</P>

Stop with the blind homerism Bandy. Its 15 hours later and he still hasn't touched the plate. Tek did a great job of blocking it. </P>

Sorry for the late response, I've been away.</P>

And happy birthday to Pizzlestick.</P>

he was saaaafe. good play by tek though
</P>

Doesn't a player have to actually touch the plate to be safe? Maybe you can show me where he did that.</P>

<h3><font color="#0000FF">FOR DEZZZZZZZZZZZ</font>
</h3><h3>
</h3><h3>Derek Jeter's march to 3,000 hits</h3>
</div><div class="mod-content">

As the Derek Jeter (http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/3246/derek-jeter) countdown ticks toward 3,000 hits, is it OK to change the subject?</p>

Look, nobody loves debating whether this man is one of the most
overrated or underrated players in history more than me. I did, after
all, write a book about that once (shameless book-plug link (http://bit.ly/qXZiD2)). But there's other stuff to talk about.</p>

And I would never dismiss the importance, to the Yankees, of the
clear reality that Jeter isn't the same player he used to be. But
there's other stuff to talk about besides that, too.</p>

The reason is this: What Derek Jeter is now -- as a player, as a
hitter -- has very little to do with how he got to the precipice of
3,000 hits. </p>

You know what got him here? Greatness. That's what.</p>

Pure, relentless, machine-like greatness. For a decade and a half. Nonstop.</p>

Very, very, very few players -- and fewer shortstops -- have had the
kind of career this man has had, where every season looked just about
exactly like every other season. Until the last two, anyway. And that's
what it takes to get a man into the 3,000-Hit Club.</p>

But for some reason, as Jeter completes the journey to one of the
most important milestones of modern times, we haven't focused enough on
that aspect of Jeter's march to 3,000 hits. So let's change the subject,
OK?</p>

<h3>STRIKE ONE -- JUST 17 DEPT.</h3>

He arrived in the big leagues on May 29, 1995. He arrived to stay in
September 1995. So this is only Jeter's 17th season in the major
leagues. And you know how many players since 1900 have reached 3,000
hits in 17 seasons or fewer? </p>

Just five -- and now him.</p>

See if you've heard of these other five men:</p>

Pete Rose, Stan Musial, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb and Paul Waner.</p>

And if you'd like to see how many hits some other great players had in their first 17 big league seasons, check out this list at baseball-reference.com (http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-index/shareit/FhxPd). It was a list that really put this feat in perspective for me.</p>

<h3>STRIKE TWO -- THE 190-HIT CLUB</h3>

Take a look at Jeter's career numbers (http://es.pn/rneIIh).
Now check out the hit column. Maybe Jeter didn't quite crank out 190
hits or more in every season of his career. But it was close.</p>

He's done it 10 times already. And the list of players who have had
10 seasons of at least 190 hits since 1900 is another very cool group.
Here it is, according to Lee Sinins' Complete Baseball Encyclopedia:</p>

1. Pete Rose, 13

2. Ty Cobb, 12

T3. Stan Musial, 10

T3. Derek Jeter, 10

T3. Ichiro Suzuki (http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/4570/ichiro-suzuki), 10 </p>

</p>

If you're hanging around with those dudes, you could hit, friends. It's that simple. </p>

But this guy wasn't just slapping singles for all those years. If
you want to limit the list to seasons of 190 hits and a .400 slugging
percentage, only Rose, Cobb, Musial and Jeter had at least 10 years like
that.</p>

And how many other players had at least 10 seasons with 190 hits, plus double figures in both home runs and stolen bases?</p>

Not ONE.</p>

Just Derek Jeter.</p>

You could look it up.</p>

<h3>STRIKE THREE -- IN SHORT ORDER DEPT.</h3>

Finally, there's one other thing we ought to mention: This man did all this as a shortstop.</p>

My friend Brian Kenny got me to thinking this week how rare it is to
inject that little subplot into the 3,000-hit conversation. So let's
inject it right now.</p>

How many members of the 3,000-Hit Club spent most of their careers as
a shortstop? Precisely two -- Honus Wagner and Calvin E. Ripken Jr.</p>

And while the list of shortstops with sustained stretches of
offensive excellence is longer than that list, it isn't a whole lot
longer.</p>

There's no easy way to measure that sort of thing. But the statistic
that comes closest is adjusted OPS-plus, because it adjusts the numbers
for eras, ballparks, etc. </p>

So through the miracle of the baseball-reference.com Play Index, I ran this list of most seasons with an adjusted OPS-plus of 110 or above by shortstops in modern history (http://bbref.com/pi/shareit/kONIZ). </p>

No shortstop in history had more seasons like that than Wagner (13). But after him, the leader board looks like this:</p>

Jeter 11

Arky Vaughan 11

Luke Appling 11

Barry Larkin (http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/1768/barry-larkin) 10
</p>

Wagner, Vaughan and Appling are already in the Hall of Fame. Larkin
should be standing at the podium 12 months from now. And you know where
Jeter is heading one of these years.</p>

Brian Kenny and I also talked on his radio show about how many
shortstops had a 10-season stretch you would rank above Jeter's 10 best
seasons (1998-2007). The only names that even made it into the
conversation were Wagner, Vaughan, Ripken and Alex Rodriguez (http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/3115/alex-rodriguez). And A-Rod didn't really play 10 full seasons as a regular shortstop, so he probably shouldn't count.</p>

Larkin was close, but didn't stay anywhere near as healthy. Alan
Trammell and Robin Yount were slightly behind. Ernie Banks would have
surpassed Jeter, but he didn't play 10 full seasons at short. Guys like
Lou Boudreau, Vern Stephens and Joe Cronin were in there someplace. And
then there was Ozzie Smith. </p>

He wasn't in the same area code as Jeter offensively. And even if you
factor in defense, there was no 10-year stretch in which the Wizard's
wins above replacement total beat Jeter's greatest decade.</p>

The way Derek Jeter played baseball over those 10 years doesn't
resemble the kind of baseball he's playing now. That's indisputable.</p>

But as this guy stands on the verge of becoming the first Yankee in
history to accumulate 3,000 hits, it's time to take a step back and
salute the career that made all this possible. Really.</p>

We'll have plenty of time to debate what the rest of Derek Jeter's
career will look like. Is it OK if we resume that debate once hit No.
3,001 arrives? Sure it is. Trust me on this.</p></div>

and it's all very ****ing awesome.

when was the last time we had someone reach 3k? i forget? Biggio?

Cool piece of info...

Wade Boggs' 3000th hit was a Homerun. only player to do that. I dont know why i even remember that. lol

The only players i recall watching constantly as a kid, and hit 3k were Molitor, Yount, Ripken and Boggs. I know there were some after that, but I didn't watch a ton of baseball after 2000 when I was in school and such. I got back into it around 07

BEckett and Lackey are going and Wakefield was on th eborder of being ur 5th starter anyway

Wakefield is tough to watch. I really have to change the channel when we're in the field on Wakefield games. Lackey has been beyond dissapointing. He's one of those guys who can't handle intense atmosphere's like Boston.</P>

Right now its Beckett (great), Wakefield (up and down at best), Miller (not sold at all on him, doesn't throw strikes), Lackey (can't get me out) and pray for rain.</P>

Our bullpen has been our saving grace. Very deep and versatile.</P>

But, once we get Buchholz and Lester back, if we are within 4 games or so, we have a chance to make a run.</P>

i thought he did alright. only gave up 2 runs. some of his stuff looked a bit flat but thats ok. he was throwing mid 90s. the movement will come back eventually. our bats were putrid last night until the 9th.

Honestly, if we can just hold on for the next 10 games or so until our players come back. Honestly, I'll take 5-5.</p>

We have one starting pitcher right now. I don't know how we are winning games. I guess God's team is getting some help from ahigh.</p>

well lets tell the truth pappy

BEckett and Lackey are going and Wakefield was on th eborder of being ur 5th starter anyway

so in reality u really have 3 starters

stop crying wolf

</p>

Right now its hold on time and hope that no one else gets too hot.</p>finally, some honesty.

its not that honest actually.... hes still trying to pawn off that Wakefield and Lackey aren't regular starters. I'd say more like bs excuses

Well Lackey probably couldn't start for most teams right now. I may be old fashioned but I think an ERA of 7.47 is a tad high.</P>

Wake is a great Red Sox player and we love the guy. He's been a Sox now for 17 years. But he's almost as old as me, and he is inconsistent to say the least. I will say this, he's great to have on your team. I really don't know where we'd be without him.</P>

I never had too high expectations for Lackey, but I did think he would win 15 games/year and be an innings eater. I just don't think he's cut out for Boston. Maybe he'll turn it around, but Morehead's patience is wearing thin.</P>

But the big problem is Buchholtz and Lester. We have the ERA leader from last year and a guy who won 19 games with back and lat issues, respectfully. That could be really bad.</P>

Soooo, I ended up getting the NYG floor mats that I found at Walmart a few weeks ago. I am happy with them, very durable good gauge rubber. The nice rubber, not the stiff crap. My only concern is that they have no rubber spikes underneath to prevent slipping. I will monitor slippage and advise. For $21, it was a steal.

"During the season, Manning made his 100th consecutive
start, finished fifth in passing yards and threw more touchdowns than
Michael Vick, Josh Freeman, Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers and Aaron
Rodgers, all of whom made the cut on a list that had Tom Brady at No. 1,
followed by Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson.</p>

Manning is also one of three quarterbacks to pass for at least 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns in each of the past six seasons."</p>

If it is similar to the Carolina Panthers forum--You cannot post an avatar or sig that will appear on each of your posts, such as we have here. You can have an ava / sig, but it's part of your public profile. Surprises me, I know of a musclemag forum with similar layout that you can have an avatar...guess it's really no big deal.

u are the worst at posting links lol

they never work
No matter how hard I try...maybe the new board will be more friendly to my link posting.

If it is similar to the Carolina Panthers forum--You cannot post an avatar or sig that will appear on each of your posts, such as we have here. You can have an ava / sig, but it's part of your public profile. Surprises me, I know of a musclemag forum with similar layout that you can have an avatar...guess it's really no big deal.

yea it doesn't look like there are sigs

it seems like u can only qoute one post at a time. No more multi qouted posts - boooo

they seem to have some cool things like an updated mail/PM section, groups you can join, and a friends list

Yes, you can have sigs, but I thought it was only in the public profile section? I have to agree, I'm a fan of the quoting carrying forward all posts on a specific topic. It is much easier to follow that way and makes for better debates.

Manny only tested positive with the Dodgers. And there is nothing certain about Papi. Only one report that he was one of the anonymous positive testers in a year where the Sox didn't win it.</P>

And do you really believe that Arod just stopped using? You poor lad. Half of baseball is on HGH because there is no test for it. Thats been true for years. You don't think that guys like <FONT size=5>Jose Battista</FONT> and Granderson just all of the sudden became power hitters?</P>

Personally I don't care. the pitchers are on it too so the play is balanced.</P>

Right now, you're headed in the wrong direction.</p>

no one cares about a sweaty lester or an overpaid, over rated crawford. the yanks are fine.

give me a break with this minor league team bs. you have plenty of heavy hitters in that lineup. ones an mvp candidate

well its not like opposing teams are scoring all their runs in the first inning. the games are in our hands until its too far out of reach. the pitching has been keeping us in games until the mid innings. we havnt really been scoring runs since the last mets game, minus the clevland game the yanks won.

thats a bit extreme, on both ends. the guy is a pull hitter with better than average power.. not BB or SS power. he always hadenough power now it comes with consistency a better approach, better swing mechanicsand confidence. thats my story and i'm sticking to it.
