View Full Version : Is It Time To Consider The 3-4 Defense?

I'm beginning to wonder. The alignment creates much more potential variety in schemes, and it's harder to find personnel for the 4-3. Where are the creat 4-3 LBs? All the ones I see are in the 3-4 alignment. I also think many more up and coming coaches/coordinators are versed in 3-4 versus 4-3. The 4-3 seems stale, vanilla, and easy to solve. Any thoughts?

Don't you need good LB's to play 3-4?

Not as easy to change that formation. The most important position other then linebackers is nose tackle. As of today we don't have a traditional nose tackle. The Packers changed to a 3-4 few seasons back with a strong draft to fit the personal of the 3-4. I highly doubt Jerry Reese would go in that direction.

Of the "4 LB" set we had out there yesterday, there was only ONE that had any athletic ability, J Williams.

Need two stud linebackers and a stud NT. To much of a big change.

Our "linebackers" are little more than glorified safeties out there... A 3-4 is out of the question without 2 good years of rebuilding, and we need this year's draft to fix the O-line (if JR has any sense anyway)...

Probably the worst idea ever brought up here. We have the worst linebackers in the game.

I want a pressure/attacking scheme, and so in that respect I would much prefer the 34 defense, which is far better for that style of defense. Unfortunately, we aren't really cut out for that. I mean the Colts have transitioned with...mild success, but they were as I'll prepared for that scheme as anyone.

I'm NOT saying it would work with today's personnel !!! I'm saying the trend is clearly the 4-3 for players and upcoming coaches, and I think long term, we need to consider it. If it's so stupid, why are most defenses now aligned that way? And the best ones are definitely aligned that way. The reason our LBs blow is that the colleges are not producing any 4-3 LBs any more.

Lol what's the worst that could happen if we switched to a 34, teams run and throw on us at will? Hmm, sounds similar to what's going on now.

Geez I just posted the same thought before I saw yours. I think it would help us in a lot of situations.
