This time, it was Baltimore rookie running back Bernard Pierce who scaled three-quarters of the length of the football field, for the 16th play of 40 or more yards the Giants have given up this season. Good hustle by cornerback Jayron Hosley stopped Pierce just short of the end zone, but coach Tom Coughlin was furious.
"They were running a lead draw late in the game that goes for 78 yards," Coughlin said.
"That’s our inability to stop a basic football play."
What happened to this defense? The one that came together so marvelously in last year’s Super Bowl XLVI run? Last winter, it seemed like they could stop everyone, and lately, the Giants look more like they can’t stop anyone.
With one game to play, the Giants rank 30th in the NFL in terms of yards allowed, a bloated 387.8 per game, better than only the Jaguars and Saints.
They had strong performances earlier in the season, against the 49ers and Packers, but it’s hard to credit those when the Giants have been outscored 67-14 the past two weeks, possibly ruining their playoff chances.
