View Full Version : Why is Boley not getting the snaps anymore?

This is ridiculous.

Mark Herzlich, Keith Rivers, Spencer Paysinger, Chase Blackburn, Kiwi, Jacquian Williams all had more snaps at LB then Boley, and coughlin said it was “not necessarily a health thing.”

My question is why?

Like all the Giants, Boley was upset about the team's lackluster performance. But the linebacker also was not thrilled about playing just 21 snaps.

“Yeah, but, that wasn’t my decision,” Boley said Wednesday. “But coaches make the call, that’s what they felt like going with, so we played it.”

Chase Blackburn (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9289/chase-blackburn) played the most of the linebackers, with 79 snaps. Mark Herzlich (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14262/mark-herzlich) saw 60 snaps and Mathias Kiwanuka (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9618/mathias-kiwanuka) received 50, playing at defensive end as well.

Jacquian Williams (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14199/jacquian-williams) played 36 snaps, Keith Rivers (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11243/keith-rivers) got 35, and Spencer Paysinger (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14648/spencer-paysinger) received 31.

Coach Tom Coughlin said earlier this week that Boley’s lack of playing time was “not necessarily a health thing.”

“It had been a cumulative health thing,” Coughlin said. “He was having some issues for three weeks that we felt was not allowing him to play the way that he’s capable of playing and that’s the reason we went into the game with these different personnel combinations.”

So what is the deal here? Why are we phasing him out?

Players and coaches rarely agree on health issues. Boley wants to come back next season so we'll see how that goes.

The only one that doesn't make sense is Paysinger. Herzlich makes sort of sense since he was mostly in on that 4-4-3 formation we used on defense (in which case we would be adding an extra inside linebacker to stop the run). But Paysinger over Boley makes absolutely no sense at all...

He's being phased out. Hard to imagine him returning.

Boley has had a down year too.

He didn't again practice today. I'm not sure they're phasing him out just yet, but that's possible. If they were hoping to get speed and agility our of the four linebacker set then doesn't it make sense to reduce the work for a player having knee and back issues?

It doesn't make sense to use Blackburn and Herzlich if they want "speed and agility" from the LBs either.

I think we will win, I'm less certain Chicago will lose.

It's not just Boley. Yea he's past his prime and at age 30 he needs to go.

But all our LB's stink. Only one of our LB's received a positive grade this past week from PFF and that was Rivers. All other LB's had a negative grade.

He makes way to much $. He is one of the highest paid defensive players and he is average at best.

I agree..I saw those stats from PFF too

I think Williams can start and so can Rivers if we resign him/stay healthy

Blackburn is god awful...we need to draft a MLB in the first three rounds

Boley has not been good this year, really struggled in coverage and getting off blocks, and he has not tackled particularly well either.

J Will is unfortunately the only LB on this team with a future. Paysinger might be ok for some situational snaps here and there.

Maybe they resign rivers to another 1 year prove it deal? Hes been a decent player when hes on the field, he just never stays on the field.

Why? What has he done this season that would make it obvious to play him more than those players? Boley has been just "another guy" out there. He's been sub par if that, and thats saying nice.

He's being phased out. Hard to imagine him returning.
A dramatic decline in snaps since the Falcons game:

1 Dallas 54% of defensive snaps
2 Bucs 100%
3 Panthers 93%
4 Eagirls 100%
5 Browns 69%
6 49ers 100%
7 Skins 100%
8 Dallas 100%
9 Steelers 100%
10 Bengals 100%
11 bye
12 Pack 85%
13 Skins 91%
14 Saints 100%
15 Falcons 49%
16 Ravens 25%

Eh, is TC said in the quote that you posted . . . it is a "cumulative health thing". Do you not believe that explanation?

Exactly. Good story, but its over. Dude is not an NFL caliber player. I dont understand for a team with such rich history and strength over the years at LB why they continue to IGNORE this issue.

Quick, name me the last LB we drafted that has been above average for us?

All I think of is guys like Kehl, Goff, Wilkinson, ect... Armstead? Maybe Brandon Short?
