View Full Version : A LIITLE PERSPECTIVE....

I was thinking (like some of you) that maybe better to lose and retool, be able to pick before Skins and Boys in draft next year. Don't even watch the game.

Then it hit me...I remembered my youth. Year after year of losing. In those days I would have been glued to TV and Newspapers (yes some of us had only these and 3 TV channels) to see what our chances were to make playoffs. However slim, however improbable...just the thought of playoffs would have had me in fits.
So now here we are, after the terrible season we have endured, with a slim chance of going to playoffs and somehow we are thinking of not rooting like crazy for the improbable?

Yes, surely we will be on the outside looking in after Bears win at 1PM game. But what if...what if Bears lose? What if we win? 4PM game with Vikes...nail bitting...What if they lose?....8PM comes along and we are Skins fans for 3 hours...

I would have loved this scenario as a kid...my team..THE GIANTS...a chance at the playoffs..WOW!!...

So WTH, Good or bad...I'm startin to get nervously pumped for tomorrow...a FAN..a Hope..bring it!! (Shear torture).

love the perspective key

I remember those days fondly as well ....waiting for my pop to describe the scenario to me as he read it in the morning news paper

it usually made little no no sense to me but all I understood was that maybe my men in blue had a shot at post season play ......and I was ready for it

always good to see you around my brother ...I hope you and yours are enjoying the holiday season

if nothing else let's go beat those eagles tomorrow

You got it YA...Happy Holidays to you and yours also.

I can't make game tomorrow due to work, but donated to "Touchdowns for Teens" so I hope some kid will get a great day experience, like my days in Yankee Stadium watching Fran run for his life and me thinking somehow he (and Spider) would pull the game out!

Good perspective, I was there also for a 10 year drought! before FINALLY in 1981 we made the playoffs & WON!!!! against the HATED eagles, with Scott Bruner throwing TD passes to Leon Bright, John Mistler & To Mullady & one man gang Rob Carpenter rushing for 161 yards- WHO ARE these guys!!!. That's just IT!, it's one thing for a bunch of OVERACHIEVERS Finally reaching a long drought busting goal. However...It's another thing rooting for the reigning SUPER BOWL champs to be Under performing in such a manner, with questions of "heart" coming from the coach. I still love your old time perspective..I remember the lean times well...ps. I didn't meet a fellow Giant fan here in Pennsylvania for my first 10 years!

Totally. I remember the days when Randall Cunningham single-handedly (it seemed) kept us from winning even more SB's. The G-Men aren't cleaning-house anyway, so don't bet on coaches losing jobs just because of 8-8 vs. 9-7. Coaching contracts are guaranteed, and the Giants never "Eat" contracts.

And as far as draft picks go, it's a pretty much a crap-shoot anyway, I'm starting to think.

And besides, I don't think any HC in history has kept us down more than Andy Reid. Why not hold the door open for him on his way out of Philly?

The fact that we are disappointed while not being officially eliminated shows how fortunate things have been of recent. There are teams that have merited no expectations at all for years if not decades.

Those SBs have gotten some posters in here spoiled. All doom and gloom and rebuild with them.

I will be there with my son and a friend and his son who are visiting from England. I plan on approaching this game as I do every game, with all the hope in the world that they win.

The Bears/Lions game worries me the most. It'll be on at 1:00 along with our game so I won't be watching the Det/Chi game, but I'll be checking the score all game. We can't take Philly lightly however. They suck this year, but they've beaten us like 8 of the last 9 times or whatever it is now. But if we win and Detroit upsets Chicago, my confidence will skyrocket going into the final two games. Green Bay could definitely beat Minny and Washington could beat Dallas. If we play extremely well against Philly and we do get in the playoffs that could set us off towards a repeat.

I loved Fran when I was a kid ....I was 13 or 14 when he came to NY and i was in full blown NY Giant mode.......and that season was awesome

just felt so positive

Good post, especially in the sea of tears and angst so prevalent here the past month.

Perspective is often a 50-50 proposition on this board, but that's probably a result of a generation gap as much as anything else. The younger members tend to take for granted the recent 6-7 years success and overreact to week-to-week fortunes and misfortunes (ie, the "need to clean house top to bottom", "fire entire coaching staff" and the "Eli's noodle arm" threads, for example).

The older can't help but exercise a bit more patience, having experienced severe, sustained lows in the 70s, and the highs for this team in the 80s, more lows in the 90s, followed by the overall successes over the past 7 years..

Some changes to our team need to be made, no doubt about it. But in today's NFL changes are made every year, win or lose, so it's guaranteed that some changes will be made by the Giants this off season. Shocker!!

The question, of course, is who will be the agents of change, and how many will there be? They will not be as numerous and widespread as some here seem to believe is warranted. Nor do they need to be.

The better, more consistently winning teams maintain a strong core of talent and coaches, and make the inevitable changes on the fringe, in most cases resulting in a slight variance in overall performance year to year. A stable Dow Jones, or a steady cardiograph comes to mind. There is no such thing as a straight line in evaluating a vibrant stock market, a strong healthy heart, or a truly good NFL team. The overall median of the highs and lows on the chart is the key indicator of good health.

Regardless of the many cynical threads on this board lately, that is still where the Giants are under the domain of Reese/Coughlin/Eli.

Disappointing season for the Giants, coming off the SB win, no question. Even severely so. But the need to completely rebuild this team in 2013, the need to completely "start over in buliding" the Giants in 2013? Nonsense.

I love the positivity and I'm sure that anyone who calls themselves a Giants fan will be rooting for us to get in the playoffs tomorrow.

The reason everyone is down however is because of how this team has been behaving as of late. The things they're saying in the interviews, the lack of effort and passion on the field for huge games, players talking about next year and how they should be starters when the season isn't even over yet...there is just this gloom of giving up and frustration amongst the players, coaches, and fans that cannot be brushed aside or overlooked, it is more than evident.

I will hurry back home from church tomorrow like I do every Sunday and cheer my tail off and yell and scream in support of our team, but please forgive me if my expectations are at an all time low and my emotions have conveyed that feeling all week.

Can't disagree with anything you say here, or with your sentiments.

But I suggest there is a tendency (not directed at you specifically, but in general) to read too much into an individual player's specific interview quote and then to make general assumptions about that player or the team as a whole.

I also suggest it is a mistake for some on this board to assume that the performance of the last 2 games will automatically carry over to next year unless "wholesale house cleaning" is done in the off season.

Eh....it's not just Osi's statements, but the team just has this '09 Bill Sheridan feel to it, I honestly with all my heart expect them to play the way they have the past 2 weeks against the Eagles tomorrow. And I hope I'm dead wrong but that's just the feeling I have about this team.

As for the wholesale house cleaning stuff...that's nonsense. I'm not one of those guys. Although there are certainly some holes that need filling which I trust Reese to take care of.

Come on ...why not?!

yup ...that's the scary one......lions suck and have lost 7 in a row and have nothing to play for.....
Chicago is fighting for a wild card berth.

the rest is not only possible , but likely.

GB is better than Minn. , and fighting for a #2 seed and a bye.
Wash is better than Dallas and at home and real hungry.

we are better than Philly and should win....
