David Wilson Can Be A Featured Back, GM Jerry Reese Says

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2013/01/david_wilson_can_be_a_featured.html

Excerpt: "David Wilson's rookie season was a slow-starter, but the first-round pick came on toward the end, displaying his exceptional speed as both a running back and a kick returner.

Though he did not specify when he could take on this role, Giants general manager Jerry Reese believes Wilson has the ability to be a featured back in the NFL.

"I don’t think there’s any question that he can be that," Reese said today in an interview with WFAN Radio. "It’s a two and three-back league nowadays, but do I think he can be a lead dog, I do think that. Because David is not a little guy, and he has incredible balance. You see guys have some big hits on him and he stays up; he’s not an easy guy to take down. So he’s much stronger than you might think just from how he looks on the field. He’s a sleek, well-chiseled athlete, but I do believe he can be the lead back."

Wilson finished the season with 71 carries for 358 yards and four rushing touchdowns. He also scored on a catch out of the backfield and a kickoff return.

Wilson started twice, in Weeks 15 and 17, while Ahmad Bradshaw was battling a knee sprain and after Andre Brown went on injured reserve with a broken fibula. Wilson's fumble in the opener against the Cowboys and his struggles to grasp pass protection limited his chances early on, but he ended on a strong note." Read more...

Giants' Jason Pierre-Paul Could Seek Help From Michael Strahan To Get Sack Swag Back

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/pierre-paul-sack-doubts-article-1.1232859

Excerpt: "Jason Pierre-Paul was one of the NFL’s most fearsome pass rushers last season, and his teammates believed he was a lock to someday overtake Michael Strahan (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Michael+Strahan) as the NFL’s single-season sack king.

Now, after a dismal year that Pierre-Paul admittedly didn’t enjoy, the Giants are going to ask Strahan to help his possible successor out.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Jerry+Reese) said Wednesday, in an interview on WFAN, that he plans to reach out to the retired Strahan to enlist his help with Pierre-Paul, who crumbled this season under the weight of both high expectations and constant double- and triple-teams.

One year after breaking out with 16 sacks, Pierre-Paul had 6 in 2012, including none in his last seven games.

Reese could sense the 24-year-old pass rusher’s growing frustration, and the GM is convinced that he needs the future Hall of Famer’s advice.

“After Michael became a superstar defensive end, he was getting double-teamed, he was getting chipped, but he was still getting sacks,” Reese said. “So the great ones still get through there and make plays." Read more...

If Terrell Thomas Returns, Giants May Move Him To Safety

http://www.giants101.com/2013/01/04/if-terrell-thomas-returns-new-york-giants-may-move-him-to-safety/

Needless to say, it's been a rough past two seasons for New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas (http://www.giants101.com/tag/terrell-thomas/). After tearing his ACL against the Chicago Bears (http://www.giants101.com/tag/chicago-bears/) in the 2011 preseason, Thomas re-injured his knee just a few days into training camp this year and was once again placed on the season-ending injured reserve. It was Thomas' third ACL tear of his career, which is usually a bad omen for skill position players.

It's hard to expect any player to return to form after multiple knee surgeries and being out of the game for two seasons. However, if Thomas does choose to return to Big Blue, a position change may be in order. General manager Jerry Reese said yesterday that he may consider moving Thomas to safety in 2013.
"We haven't had much conversation with (Terrell Thomas (http://www.giants101.com/tag/terrell-thomas/)) as of late, but we'll definitely reach out to him and see how he is and see if he's going to be able to make another comeback," Reese said. "He may be one of those guys that at this point in his career, if he does get back on the field, you might have to move him to a different position like safety instead of playing corner. A couple of ACL's playing corner, man, that's tough to do."

Thomas may appear to be a little undersized for an NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/) safety. His 6'0"/ 190 pound frame pales in comparison to the likes of Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips (http://www.giants101.com/tag/kenny-phillips/), who each have at least 16 pounds on Thomas; however, before his injury, Thomas led the Giants with 101 tackles in 2010. He's a great tackler in the open field and is not afraid to give up his body to support the run defense. If he shows the ability to play run defense next training camp, Thomas' ball skills may be better utilized as an over-the-top defender as opposed to a cover corner." Read more...

Giants Sign Curtis Painter, Michael Jasper, And Five Others to Reserve/Futures Contracts

http://www.giants101.com/2013/01/04/new-york-giants-sign-curtis-painter-michael-jasper-five-others-to-reservefutures-contracts/

Excerpt: "On Wednesday, the New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/)signed all six of their practice squad players to reserve/futures contracts (http://www.giants101.com/2013/01/03/new-york-giants-sign-six-players-to-reservefutures-contracts/). That was followed up on Thursday when they signed seven more players, including quarterback and former Indianapolis Colts 6th round pick (2009) Curtis Painter.

Painter, who played in Indianapolis for two seasons before joining the Baltimore Ravens in training camp of this past year, has appeared in 11 NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/)games, completing 140 of 271 pass attempts (51.7%) for 1,624 yards, six touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
In addition to Painter, the team also signed guard and former Buffalo Bills 7th round pick (2011) Michael Jasper, wide receivers Brandon Collins (http://www.giants101.com/tag/brandon-collins/) and Kevin Hardy, defensive back and former Chicago Bears 7th round pick (2007) Trumaine McBride, defensive tackle Bobby Skinner (http://www.giants101.com/tag/bobby-skinner/) and linebacker Jake Muasau (http://www.giants101.com/tag/jake-muasau/).

"I am officially a New York (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york/) Giant!!" Muasau tweeted upon being signed (https://twitter.com/jake_da_uce/status/286884287666606083)." Read more...

Michael Strahan's Single Season Sack Record Remains Intact For Another Season

http://www.giants101.com/2013/01/04/michael-strahans-single-season-sack-record-remains-intact-for-another-season/

Excerpt: "For New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) fans following the race for the NFL (http://www.giants101.com/tag/nfl/)'s single-season sack record, last week was a nerve-racking one. Houston Texans (http://www.giants101.com/tag/houston-texans/)' defensive tackleJ.J. Watt (http://www.giants101.com/tag/j-j-watt/) need only 2.5 sacks, while San Francisco (http://www.giants101.com/tag/san-francisco/) 49ers' defensive end Aldon Smith (http://www.giants101.com/tag/aldon-smith/) remained in contention, needing 3.5 sacks to surpass Michael Strahan (http://www.giants101.com/tag/michael-strahan/)'s record of 22.5 sacks in one season. But after the conclusion of the regular season, Strahan's record stands alone, unscathed.

Strahan's record came with some controversy after it appeared Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre purposely fell down in front of him, giving him an easy sack, putting him in the record books. Many were hoping to see either Watt or Smith come through last week, and become the all time sack leader. One of those people was Mark Gastineau, the man who held the record prior to Strahan breaking it." Read more...

"Kudos & Wet Willies:" Giants' 2012 Season In Review

http://www.bigblueview.com/2013/1/3/3828000/kudos-wet-willies-2012-season-in-review-edition

Excerpt: "I did season-ending roster power rankings (http://www.bigblueview.com/2013/1/1/3822436/new-york-giants-roster-power-rankings-rating-the-giants-final-results) earlier in the week, but our signature post around these parts is 'Kudos & Wet Willies.' Pretty much every outlet covering the New York Giants (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-york-giants) is putting together end-of-season grades, report cards and the like.

The only way to do that around here and stand out from all the other season-ending standards is to review the season, 'Kudos & Wet Willies' style. What I thought I would do is use the roster power rankings established earlier this week, go through each player and assign him the appropriate 'K&WW' designation for his work in 2012.Some of these I will comment on. Others will just get the 2012 designation. largely, that depends on whether or not I think there is anything really worth saying.Let's see how much of the end result you agree with.

1. Eli Manning (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2235/eli-manning) -- This is simple. By any measure you want to apply, Manning wasn't as good in 2012 as he was in 2011, and he wasn't good enough to get the Giants back into the postseason tournament. His passing yardage dropped by almost 1,000 yards, from 4,933 to 3,948. His passer went from 92.9 to 87.2. His passing yardage per game went from 308.3 to 246.8. In 2011 he completed 85 passes of 20 yards or more, 18 of those for more than 40 yards. In 2012, only 60 completions of at least 20 yards, and only 10 for more than 40. Not all of that decline is his fault, but some of it most certainly is on him. He wasn't good enough. Wet Willie

2. Jason Pierre-Paul (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/108442/jason-pierre-paul) -- Only 6.5 sacks, but still will start in the Pro Bowl. Tremendous work against the run, but not enough impact against the pass. Kwillie

3. Victor Cruz (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/109584/victor-cruz) -- His production dropped from his record-setting 1,536-yard 2011 season, but what did you expect. With no Mario Manningham (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34493/mario-manningham) and a wounded Hakeem Nicks (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71294/hakeem-nicks)defenses mauled him. He still caught 86 passes. Kudos

4. Ahmad Bradshaw (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/16768/ahmad-bradshaw) -- 'Kudos' to his heart and productivity when he can play. A 'Wet Willie' to his feet. The end result?Kwillie

5. Antrel Rolle (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/1769/antrel-rolle) -- For me, he has emerged as the leader of the defense. Kudos

6. Will Beatty (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71290/will-beatty) -- Pay the man. Kudos

7. Chris Snee (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2256/chris-snee) -- Still a good player. Kudos

8. Chase Blackburn (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2207/chase-blackburn) -- Did the best he could. Really, though, the need a middle linebacker upgrade. Kwillie

9. Linval Joseph (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/108661/linval-joseph) -- Hopefully he continues to improve. Kudos

10. Hakeem Nicks -- He tried, but his knee wouldn't cooperate. Kwillie" Read more...

They go through this every year. While nothing is beyond happening, I wouldn't read too much into these futures contracts
