What kind of music do you guys listen to? Also, do you play any instruments?

Giantz4Life

I listen primarily to reggae, punk, surf rock, hip hop, dancehall, and classic rock. I'm also big into mid century MoTown/R&B stuff like Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, and the Temptations. Chuck Berry is also one of my heroes. I don't listen to any current modern music for the most part.

I started playing guitar when I was 12 (now 26). I play guitar, bass, and drums. I also have been working with a vocal coach for 3 years.

Listen to most music, but tend to not like most newer music (at least not most of the commercial stuff). If you hit shuffle while listening to my library you're just as likely to hear John Coltrane as you are Infected Mushroom or Fear Factory as you are Tom Waits.

Oh Rudy, why do you do this to me? Now I'm going to start ranting. Love ska. There are different kinds of ska contrary to most people's general belief. Ska is actually a precursor to reggae music. Reggae music is the slower brother of ska, but both are characterized similarly by the off-beat guitar chops you hear in reggae music (think Bob Marley's "One Love" rhythm guitar) which is called "skanking".

Here's an example of 1960's ska (and one of my favorite songs):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o49zOugJTnM

Now all the bands in the 1980's/1990's that are categorized as ska are more properly referred to as New Age/Third Wave ska. This includes bands such as: Sublime, Reel Big Fish, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Save Ferris etc.

Very similar, but with obvious differences. Third Wave ska introduced more influences of punk music that was made popular in the late 1970's and 1980's when punk music and hardcore punk became a sub cultural phenomenon in the US and England. Punk influences ska, reggae influences punk, but everything in popular music (and I mean literally everything) comes from blues music.

I could write a freakin' book on music especially punk, ska, and reggae.

Sorry I had to go off like that I just can't help myself when it comes to music.

Sorry I had to go off like that I just can't help myself when it comes to music. This post made me happy haha. I have a best friend who loves and plays punk. He really introduced me to it and I can't stop listening to it. I grew up on reggae and ska due to my father who is a huge fan. Do you know the Toots and Maytals? they are my favorite..

Do you know the movie This is England? If you don't it's a great movie and has all of those punk/ska bands in there. It's about the skinhead movement in the 1980' in England, and of course Ska was very popular in that era like you mentioned.

So, what is a ban around here? I don't post on many message boards so I'm not too familiar with the rules.

Does banned mean forever or can one be banned for a week? I got a week suspension very early in my posting for calling some moron a moron. How do you know if you're getting a week or forever? I assume the Mods send you an email but in this case, there's no way we'd know how long MS is getting, huh?

My experience with it is that you can't see the boards unless you log out. If you log in, there's a memo that says why you're banned, and when it's over and you can't bypass that screen.

So we can't know for how long he issuspended (I guess would be a better term), but I doubt for more than a week.

Eric B. and Rakim for me, personally. "Paid in Full" is a top 5 hip hop album IMO.

Snoop has always been way overrated to me because he's got swag for days. Don't get me wrong, I like old Snoop Dogg records, but I think he's a very average lyricist. Dre is one of the best producers of all time, but Snoop has always just been more of a gimmick to me than a serious rap artist.

Additionally, another duo that never gets enough credit is Gang Starr. DJ Premier is one of my favorite producers ever, and Guru (RIP) was nasty on the mic.

It's all about where and when you grew up. Point in case: I grew up in a diverse area surrounded by urban kids from kindergarten to high school and that's where I learned to love rap music. Without those kids I doubt I would have ever listened to it let alone give it a chance. As I have gotten older I have come to resent the whole gangster rap ideology, which is the feeling I am sure many parents and older generations have felt forever. I also grew up in the "golden age" of hip hop and rap music when the considered best artists of that genre were in their primes. My friends from a town about 2 miles away which is mainly white upper middle class all hate rap music. You're a product of your environment.

Edit: As a fellow musician I would also argue that rhythm is the heartbeat of music, not melody.

As ussshhhh MH is wrong. Hip hop uses classical, j***, blues rifs and loops for beats. It makes me appreciate all music genres. What you hear on the radio is not real hip hop.
If the beats aren't done by live drummers how can it be taken seriously.

Hell yes!
I definitely prefer Strats and Tele's.
Much better feel and expressive from a good guitarist.

I love Jimmy Page but nothing sounds like a Strat in the hands of a great guitarist.

I think Gibson LP's are too expensive. The Epi LP's can be almost as good. But just like Mexican Strats, you have to play them because they are inconsistent. But when you get a good Epi Les Paul for $500.00, it's well worth it.

I'm with you on that. Plus the LP's are SO heavy. I have 2 PRS's as well. An SE semi hollow and a Santana SE. these guitars are friggin great. Feel like Strats and are unbelievably light.

Love PRS. I have only played one that was my buddy's, but I loved it. It was super light also which is what I look for in a guitar. Strats aren't the lightest guitars but it just feels like they were molded for my hands when I play one.

I have an Ibanez S470 which I bought years ago to play metal shredding stuff when I'm just messing around with sweep picking, pinch harmonics, etc and that is the lightest guitar I own, plus the super thin wizard neck makes it really fun to play.

My favorite guitar I own is definitely my Mexican Strat. I got it when I was 12 years old ( now 26 ) and it's been my baby forever. Added 2 Seymour Duncan pickups (humbucker on the bridge) and it sounds great. I also love my Martin 00CXAE Grand Concert. The lightest and most playable acoustic I've ever held.

My #1 guitar is my Mexican Strat. Its a fat Strat with only two knobs. One tone and one volume. Its the only Strat I've ever seen without three knobs.
I put a Pearly Gates PU on the bridge so I get the benefit of a hot Humbucker and I still get that great single coil neck PU sound.

You can make a Strat sound like most anything. You can't make a LP sound like a Strat.
Strats are "feel" guitars. especially with a maple fingerboard. I don't like Rosewood on a Strat. Nothing is better for bending strings than maple.

But when you get a good Epi Les Paul for $500.00, it's well worth it. Yeah... Lp's are expensive "they have some wood in them" which give them their rich sound...Epi Lp's... I'm glad you said almost as good...almost only counts in horseshoes... no comparison and an insult to Gibson guitars ... imo.... rhythm may well be easier than playing lead...but I'm not sure its all that easy ..some people have no sence of rhythm at all and probably couldn't play a juice hard if their life depended on it .....anyhow I may be bias I owned and played a LP for ten years ....played rhythm buy the way and loved it ....

I payed 500.00 for that LP in 75...and it was used, year old at the time

Guitarists who prefer a Strat over anything else:

Hendrix
SRV
Clapton (originally a Gibson guy who became a Strat man in the 60's)
David Gilmour of Pink Floyd
Eric Johnson

and your boy Johnny Mayer.

The Stratocaster helped define popular rock music today as we know it. Not hating on Gibson because I think they are great guitars, just not for me. Although I think the Gibson SG looks bad ***.

Perfectly said MH. Couldn't agree more.

The Strat and the LP are both icons, but the part about the Strat being a "feel" guitar is perfectly explained.
