Excerpt: "As it stands, the New York Giants (http://www.giants101.com/tag/new-york-giants/) are projected to be around $4.7 million over the cap in 2013, and General Manager Jerry Reese has made it clear the team will look different next season. With the cap growing by at about $300,000, 2013 will see an increase from $120.6 million to $120.9 million, leaving the Giants about $5 million to shed. Reese also has to deal with several free agents including Victor Cruz, Will Beatty, Osi Umenyiora (http://www.giants101.com/tag/osi-umenyiora/), and Martellus Bennett. A trick the Giants have used in the past is asking several players to restructure their contracts to fit under the cap, and that's likely what they will do again." Read more...

Restructuring is what got us into this mess in the first place...

Restructuring really isnt a trick you are just crippling the team more in the future. Giants should eat 2013 cut the vets and fix the cap so they can resign all the young players.
Priority should be youth and keeping these players around

Why can't we cut the vets who are tearing this cap apart?

I've always found the cap nuances difficult to understand.

If a player is under contract for 2 more years (2013 and 2014), and we release him before FA, do we take a a cap hit for 2013? What about 2014? What if we release him on last cut day of Training Camp?

I'm just going to sit back and wait to see who stays and who goes. There are just too many factors working against our cap. I trust Reese will make the best decisions for the team going forward. Restructuring is just a short-term solution to a long-term problem. We'll have to cut some loose ends.

I know people were expecting the cap to increase by "some" amount, but $300k? Really?

That's Gatorade money.

Isn't Tuck's cap number next year quite reasonable? I seem to remember it being in the 5 - 6 M range. Granted, he was the invisible man this year, but he is still pretty young, and could eek out another few productive seasons.

Blackburn is not the issue here. He is solid on STs and a good reliable backup LB. And is dirt cheap. Blackburn stays IMO. those are the kind of players we are going to need to keep in order to fix the cap issue.

Diehl is the only vet that it's fairly obvious that he has to go. He's just not playing at a level that justifies his salary.

Osi, is obvious history, unless the bottom falls out of his market; which it might. He played pretty poorly this year, and he's not a three down player.

Andre Brown might have injured himself out of a job. Same for Phillips. Their contacts have to be small for them to stay.

They just need to look long and hard at the film from this season, and players that didn't play up to the level of a good or better NFL starter simply can't be kept hanging on. If guys got in the games, and didn't get the job done, then why even bring them back to camp? Young players being developed are different; but generally they're not the salary cap problems. What it boils down to is some underperforming vets should be cut loose, and the team needs to fill those gaps from the bench, or through the draft. I think the core is there to fill those gaps, even most of the OL gaps, from the bench. There had to be a young tackle that could have outplayed Diehl if given a chance. Brewer came in late in the Baltimore game and played quite well. Mosley should be in a position to push for a starting spot next year too.

OK, so maybe you bring them to camp so they don't get a full training camp with another team, and cut them at the end of camp. But, I think that ruins the cohesion that the team should be developing in camp.

Webster has got to take less money. He's one of the highest paid CBs in the NFL.

Andre Brown might have injured himself out of a job.

Brown is an exclusive rights free agent

Basically he has to take whatever the Giants offer him if he wants to play

It seems that the Coughlin regime won't cut guys that have time on their contract. It's an old-boy network type of thing.

I'm sorry, but Tuck is not worth $6M. Very few players are.

that 6M is more like 12M considering he mails in at least 4 games and is sucking wind on the sideline every 4th qtr

We need to move on from the injury prone guys as well like Phillips, and Andre Brown. We don't utilize the TE enough in the passing game to justify giving Bennett more money, and releasing guys like Rolle will result in a large cap hit while leaving a void at that position.

Because in many cases, the cap hit would be too high to justify it.

This ! Sooner oR later you have to man up and start eating away cap salary many or make the tough personnel decisions Trimming away the fat of the not so popular desicion of cutting away vets.

Because in many cases, the cap hit would be too high to justify it.Its cheaper to keep em. Because of the restructures they have been paid already, many of them anyway. We cant take that money back we are just spreading out the hit against the cap over their contracted time. If we cut their contract we are responsible for all that money at once.
