View Full Version : List of alll players Jerry Reese has lost and signed in free agency

GreenZone

More accurately all signings by Giants of players from other teams and gone from Giants to other teams, whether the original team cut, couldn't resign, etc. This does not include Giant players the previous year that were re-signed by the Giants.

Reese took office (was inaugurated) on Jan. 15th, 2007.

Players signed before free agency started (March 12) were not on the active roster of an NFL team at the end of last season and thus eligible to sign (futures contracts).

Yeah, yet people actually freak out and are in a panic over what happens. Seems like two of the most steady pickups were the kickers.

And if you stack the drafted and undrafted free agents against the free agents, you can see how overrated free agent pickups and losses are, at least for the G-Men.

This is an excellent recap and helps to assess our performance with free agents free of emotion and conjecture.

In retrospect, the only guys I would have liked to keep were Barry Cofield and Shiancoe.

Interestingly we let Visanthe go becasue we thought we had a TE on his way to the Hall of Fame. Over their careers Shiancoe has done more than Shockey ironically and we could have had him for half the price and twice as long.

Overall, even though some of those losses stung at the time, the decisions were overwhelmingly correct. On the signing side you can clearly see that JR is a value buyer and avoids the big $$ signings. Canty and Boley and Rolle were the exceptions. Otherwise, he's just filling needs with capable under the radar types for the most part.

That 09 team really should have been something special. I will single handily blame C.C. Brown & Bill Sheridan for that teams failures.

As you look at the signings and losses, at first blush, it's like it's not that big a deal.

It also shows that there are a lot more misses than hits going both directions.

But in the bigger scheme of things, it's some of the most subtle moves that can fill a hole--even with mediocre--that can make all the difference. Or, even adding a depth player that turns out to be essential when someone gets hurt.

Another thought that occurs is getting the right mix of personality for the team. In that case, perhaps Antrel Rolle has served above and beyond the overall caliber of his play and helped where perhaps the 2011 team would have never made the final climb?

The whole thing is a mystery and a gamble. It's likely that a number of those lost to free agency found themselves in a situation where they came into a poor scheme, lacked chemistry with teammates, got spoiled by the fat contract or simply got hurt and never panned out to what the team signing them hoped for.

But, finally, when hearing the panic in some of the fans and the over valuation of fan favorites and what they mean to the bigger picture, one can only say that its a good thing the Giants have a great front office to do all this work and look at many sides of the story that fans will never see or know.

Their efforts did not help, that's true. But you overlook the many other elements of the defense that failed that year. It was a true team "effort" that pevailed.

KP went on IR after Game 2.

CC and Rouse were never intended to be starters in the secondary, yet we had no choice but to do so from mid October on.

Our entire DL failed from mid October on. We had one of our worst years in recent memory in getting to the QBs, or even putting much pressure on them.. That was due to our prime DTs Robbins and Cofield both coming off end-of-the-season surgeries the previous winter, so they weren't even playing at 50%, really. Canty, who had never missed a game due to injury the previous 4 seasons before we picked him up in FA, missed about half the season with hamstring and calf issues and never fully recovered that year. Those issues resulted in the interior getting absolutely zero push the entire season.

Which inhibited greatly the effectiveness of our edge rushes. Which in turn put unbearable pressure on a severely depleted secondary. Even Webster missed some time (if memory serves). TT was the only guy on defense who was healthy the entire season that year, and he played well--but that was obviously not enough.

Sure, it's easy to blame CC Brown and Sheridan. They deserve their share of the blame. But to put all our failures that year on just those two is ..... incorrect.

I agree completely with your concluding sentence.

I look at the list a bit differently than you, in that I don't simply see the total list of both and focus on the small number of "hits" vs the large number "misses". The entire process of producing a product for the field every Sunday will always depend upon only a relatively small percentage of "hits".

What I notice is the net result of our FA transactions each year in that list. Now, this of course is subjective and my opinion about certain players and their worth to the Giants, but what I take away from this list is that nearly every year we lose zero to 1 players who do anything after departing Giants, thus their losses did not really hurt us. On the other side of the ledger, we pick up 1-3 players who help us at least for a year or two.

So I see a net gain in contribution in nearly all the Reese years of FA transactions involving acquisitions vs losses.

Cofield is doing alright.

He starts for the Redskins but he's no pro bowler. He's a solid player and thats it, nothing to get excited about.

I've come to realize the NFL is really 80%-90% average/solid players. Then there are like a handful of game changers. Reese, seems to think this way which is why Eli has never been a FA and I doubt if JPP gets there at a young age either.

Nice article. It says it all in the case of players who are washed up because of injuries. In the case of Pettitgout, his back injuries were severe and obvious. In the case of Simms, however, looking back, one would wonder about squeezing another year or two out of him and not going with the obvious mistake of a Dave Brown.

But, of course, that was pre-Jerry

Reese and the org do a great job. IMO..
I dont get too excited about new FAs coming in. Not going to build up Louis Murphy as the next big deep threat in th NFL type of thing or Conner being the MLB we have been looking for. Notihng against these guys but time will tell. A good chance these new FAs will be just what there are which is 2nd and 3rd tier players looking to make their mark....or not.

Thats why we signed Rolle to a big contract. We had lost Butler and Wilson (Super Bowl Starters) and then signed Rousse, CC and Sammy Knight...OUCH. We were desperate for S help and so the big contract for Rolle. Sometimes it just needs to be done and for the most part it has paid off. But I'm glad the giants only pay big contracts when they really need to.
