One year deal via pro football talkMy First response would be "WHY?"....
But I know nothing about him so i will reserve my comments till after i do a little more research on him.. but yea Id say that would make both hixon and barden exspendable unless they plan to just bring one of them back to compete for 1 spot

I like em as a depth WR with deep speed, and alittle thicker frame then Hixon... I think he comes here with no expectations and can just be a deep threat..

Anyone else not thrilled? Not thrilled, but this is a good move.. Should be the 4th WR, a nice deep threat

Well, he hasn't exactly had the best QB situations to work with but I'd like to know what happened with him last year during his stint with the Panthers. If he came here to increase his value like Bennett did last year, it could be a wise move on his part.

I've watched him since high school....he's never been on a real team with a real QB, he'll be a upgrade over barden...

Good low budget signing. Followed this guy. He will make a good 4th receiver and he can play the slot. He's elusive and has a good number of catches. IMO definitely equal to or a slight upgrade over Hixon

Dude has big time speed, hands are ok. Had some 100+ games w weak QBs. Having a healthy Nicks, and Cruz on the field could free him up. Def a good pick up.

That's a very good pick up for our 4th wr and some depth. Can stretch the field.

This is a very good pickup. No need to worry about Hixon and Barden leaving now.

After looking at his stats I now think he is an upgrade over Hixon. He's 25 years old and here are his stats:
1. 2009 with Oakland he had 39 catches for 521 yards and 4TDS.
2. 2010 with Oakland he had 41 catches for 609 yards and 2 TDS
3. 2012 with Carolina he had 25 catches for 336 yards and 1 TD

I'd still rather have Hixon. He's a proven commodity in our system and is a very good returner but overall I like the Murphy pickup.

He's got skill but I wonder how fast he can pick up our system on a 1 year contract. They might just remove some of the option routes for him I suppose.

I've watched him since high school....he's never been on a real team with a real QB, he'll be a upgrade over barden... I'll agree that this guys QB play has always stunk and hes flashed enough that u would think with solid downfield throwing QB , whos pretty consistent, will make murphy much more a weapon and producer...

I'm pretty excited about this. As mentioned, he has never had a QB. This could be very interesting...
Let's just hope he stays healthy. He's still very young and has tremendous upside.

The bottom line here is we got a solid replacement for Hixon. I liked Hixon very much and now that we lost him I happy the Giants found a suitable replacement. Hey if by some chance Hixon comes back he would be a definite big upgrade over Barden

Hey if he is smart he will catch on. He will only be a # 4 Receiver.

That's exactly it. Gilbrides system is so difficult to grasp for some wr's. I guess he can't be any worse then what Barden was lol

Bardens difficulties rested mainly in the fact that he did not run good routes, could not get seperation, and could not consistently make plays on the ball.

Regardless of what you think of Gilbrides system -- Murphy is fast, is an average route runner, and has proven that he can make plays on the ball.
This signing is all upside IMO. Revisit this comment in mid November, but I'm predicting that this will wind up being a GREAT signing.

He is also a great blocking receiver. Can help Cruz get those breakaway runs.

Speed kills! also has better than average hands. I saw him make a good number of difficult catches at Florida. If he gets the playbook down he could be very productive for a non starter. Good pick up!

He looked good in his rookie and second season with the Raiders. Good on sideline routes, jump balls. Seems like a scrapper. Good blocking down field. Laid the wood on two eagles on one play! Good hands, also used on end-arounds... If we could get just a % of what I see on this highlight clip we will have made a steal.

Anyone know what type of situation he was in at Carolina? How many games was he used in? Was he sitting behind people kinda like bennett did in Dallas and with a chance to play may show some talent? Or was he hurt last season? Being he was a 3rd or 4th option then I can see the low production, but how many games did he play in to get the 25 catches

I wasn't saying the Murphy signing was bad at all, I actually like it. He's what 25-26? So yeah I do agree there's a lot of upside in this signing. Like enigma said gilbrides offense is very complex and lets hope he does grasp it.

Great upgrade. FYI there will be a battle for the number 3 WR spot, mark my words. Murphy is faster than Randle.

Not thrilled, but this is a good move.. Should be the 4th WR, a nice deep threatagreed with both of you. He is young, and is coming in to compete for the 4th WR spot. He has speed and showed some production on teams with lesser offenses. And he has been relatively durable/healthy since coming into the NFL.

A definite upgrade over Barden.

A definite upgrade over Barden. Please stop saying that. Barden has not yet proven he's a legitimate NFL receiver. Tell me he is Hixon's equal only younger and healthier or something like that but PLEASE don't invoke Barden. He is not a benchmark for NFL receivers. He is however a benchmark for tall people. lol

faster than randle? ,,,that's an understatement. he ran a 4.32 at the combine and has been timed as fast as 4.25. this kid could be a dark horse this year. he along with cruz, randle and a HEALTHY nicks could make our passing attack very formidable. Let's also not forget the back flipping rocket ship and andre brown running the ball. All of This of course in contingent upon the OL, but if we get that shored up we now are in business folks.

Very good depth pick up. Not very disciplined in his routes and hands may be an issue, but great speed and will stretch a defense.

LOL, we'll need more than Murph to do that. Methinks we will need the Eli of 2 years ago plus the DL of two years ago. That may do it.

I think he's going to enjoy Eli throwing to him. If he can get the option route system down he could be a a great #3 or 4. If we resign Cruz we have the best WR core in the league and a QB that knows what to do. Nicks, Cruz, Randle, Murphy, and Wilson in the backfield- we may have the most explosive offense in the league.

Locked and loaded grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr get'em!!!

Louis Murphy will be a non-factor. Not many Receivers (regardless of talent) can play with any sort of consistency (or effectiveness) in this offense. I would have expected him to succeed in Chudzinski's vertical passing scheme, but he didn't do much of that either.

Sorry, don't feel like retyping this.
