"Dan Connor got a taste of the competitive nature of the NFC East in his one season with the Dallas Cowboys. Now he’ll see it from another side after signing today with the Giants, for whom he is expected to play middle linebacker.

“Being able to stay in the same division is great,” said Connor, who was released by the Cowboys on Monday. “There are so many rivalries. It’s a very competitive division to play in. I’m very excited to stay in it.

"(Giants-Cowboys) is a big-time rivalry. It runs deep. There are a couple of them in the NFC East. I know it’s a competitive one with definitive hatred from team to team, and you don’t see that much in the NFL. But it’s alive in this division.”

Connor is entering his sixth NFL season. A third-round draft choice from Penn State by Carolina in 2008, he played four years with the Panthers before joining Dallas last year as a free agent. Now he is looking to settle down with the Giants.

“I’ve had a lot of different experiences,” Connor said. “I’ve been in a 4-3, I’ve been in a 3-4 before. I’ve played under four different coordinators in my five years. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to play in different systems.

“Talking to the Giants coaches, the (4-3) system seems to fit me. I wanted to get back into a 4-3 look. It’s a great opportunity. When my agent called me and said they were interested I was so thrilled. This is a class organization with a lot of tradition. They’re a successful team with a winning tradition and it was something I wanted to be a part of. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Because he changed teams just last year, Connor is well-versed in the challenges of learning a new system and getting acclimated to new teammates and coaches.

“It’s difficult,” he said. “With a new system you have to learn all the verbiage and pick it up and be comfortable with it as quickly as possible. Having experience in doing that starting from scratch, having done that in the past I think will help me here pick things up quickly and feel comfortable and contribute to the team.”

Connor has played both inside and outside, but he prefers to line up at middle linebacker.

“I think that’s my position,” Connor said. “That’s the position where I’m comfortable. I played it in college, I was in the middle of a 4-3 in Carolina. So I feel most comfortable in the middle. But I do have some experience on the outside.”

Connor, who is 6-2 and 241 pounds, has played in 56 career games with 27 starts. His career totals include 222 tackles (129 solo), a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Last year with Dallas, he played in 14 games with eight starts – three at weakside linebacker and the season’s last five games at middle linebacker (taking over for former Penn State teammate Sean Lee). He was credited with 56 tackles (32 solo).

At Penn State, Connor set a school record with 419 career tackles in 45 games (37 starts). He also had 14.0 sacks and four interceptions. As a senior in 2007, Connor won the Bednarik Ward, which is given to the nation’s top defensive player. He was a first-team All-America as a senior and second-team as a junior.

Connor’s journey to the NFC East started when he was a star football player at Strath Haven High School in suburban Philadelphia. So…

“I grew up an Eagles fan,” Connor said. “That’s another dynamic that will make it even more interesting.”

Sounds like Reese is really trying to shore up our weaknesses with FA, so he can just BPA that **** up in the draft again...

Ya, physicality, expierence, and intangables is what were getting with Connor.. A team guy, who will be more of a glue guy then a diffrence maker.. its a solid, if not unspectacular signing...

That's pretty much the only way I operate. I can't predict the future, so I just extrapolate from past data. It does produce some weird artifacts (like extrapolating from an 0-1 start making me feel like we're going to go 0-16), but in general it helps me try to see what will happen...

Reese really is the master. Not perfect, but right more than not which, in this business we call the NFL, is an accomplishment.

The team is definitely trying to get more stout over the middle. Between Cullen Jenkins, Shaun Rodgers (only on running downs) and Conner coming in we should be better against the run. Providing these guys stay healthy.

This is a great signing. He was great at Penn State, he will prove to be an excellant player.

all in all Conner just has to be better than Chase. I am a Blackburn fan but you get what I am saying.

toughness? Connor is almost as fragile as Rivers---LOL!!

But I will give the guy a chance, maybe by freak luck, Connor will stay healthy and be a key contributor to an improved defense. Its a 1 yr deal, and there is no guarantee that he makes the final 53. We'll just have to wait and see.

We'll have to wait until after training camp to see who's playing where/when

Assuming he can stay healthy, I don't see how Connor would even have a chance to beat him out. The game tape clearly points at who is the better player.

Obviously with his lack of other weapons, physicality is a major thing Connor must utilize and when ur as physical as he is, u get hurt sometimes..

The thing i like about em is even though hes going into yr 6 of his career, u still get the feeling he has a chance to be better with us then he had been so far.. He was so talented with Penn St, and injuries along with i think playing on bad teams has played a part in his not living up to his potential.. I honestly think this team will be the right fit for Connor... Albeit, i might be a bit biast, because i liked em as a prospect, and obviously he hasen't lived up to his potential yet.lol

college stats dont mean too much. Especially 6 years later. The guy, for one reason or the other, is a 2nd tier player. Probably wont ever be more than that.

Fragile? How many games has Connor missed the last two years?

Don't get too excited about Connor. Here are his NFL snap counts.

2012 350
2011 477
2010 261
2009 78

They are low for a reason. He's not very good.

I like the signing because it is an upgrade to Chase. However, Dan still has a lot to prove in this league before he can be considered a good pickup for the long or short term. People here remember him from his PSU days, but the fact is he has been a huge underperformer in the NFL

I would like to see us still address this issue in the draft. There are a good number of 2nd roundish LBs who I think are better prospects than DC ever was.

What I think is irrelevant. Our GM does not like LBs. Ogletree will not be the pick especially after having a DUI. Honestly it's common sense but apparently it's not

Its a nice addition, but now Im worried Ogletree wont be a Giant. This guy may be suitable, but he is no stud. I still wanna see Ogletree in blue.

Is having a DUI any worse than Hosely failing the drug test right before the combine? Is Ogeltree the first college kid to get drunk and do something stupid?

and Hosley's stock fell significantly for his mistake. Prior to his failed test, he was projected to be an early 2nd pick. He fell all the way to the end of the 3rd.
So by bringing up Hosley you are kinda helping the argument against Ogletree in the 1st, rather than helping it.

To answer your question, yes it is much worse. One is reckless irresponsible and dangerous the other is a 20yr old kid smoking some pot. Neither is unforgivable but both should preclude smart teams from drafting those players with a high pick.

How we play against the read-option will determine if we make the playoffs.
The read option will last 5 minutes in the NFL. Vick and RGIII are going to kill themselves in the process of trying to play it.

Vick is all banged up at this point in time in his career, he is a concussion more or less away of probably ending his career and RGIII is following the same path.
