Excerpt: "We're taking a little closer look at each draft pick and what the Giants' brass is saying about the newcomers.

Fifth-round pick: S Cooper Taylor (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/15895/cooper-taylor), Richmond

Here's our rapid reaction (http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/25082/rapid-reaction-cooper-taylor-fifth-round) on Taylor and what the Giants' brass is saying about him:

Marc Ross: Just at that point in the draft we think we got a hidden gem there. This guy is big, fast, smart, plays the game the right way. He does a lot of things for Richmond. They line him up at multiple positions. You’ll see him in the box; you’ll see him back deep. He covers the slot. Productive there. He transferred from Georgia Tech, but we think this guy has got a lot of upside. Sent our (safeties) coach (Dave) Merritt down there to work him out-a private workout and he was really impressed by him. We had him in for a visit. The kid is really smart. Loves football, so we think he has a ton of upside.

Tom Coughlin: Young safety who has the great, great numbers –- 6-4 plus, 228. Really good test score –- 44.5 range. He had four interceptions, 78 tackles this past year. We are hoping that he is going to come in and apply all of the tools that he has right away there in the secondary for us. He is a safety by trade but you drop him down in that three-safety package or whatever you want to do... whether he plays an outside backer or whatever. That is all going to have to be determined when we get him in here.

Jerry Reese (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8165/jerry-reese): Big size-speed safety that we think has a really nice upside. I can envision him honestly on special teams with that size and speed. I can envision him being that third safety in some of the three-safety looks that (defensive coordinator) Perry Fewell likes to use sometimes... (Taylor's heart condition is) nothing significant for our trainers and doctors right now. They cleared him and they don’t really have any real concerns." Read more...

If he pans out and can cover the TE this pick could trump all other rounds for us.

Nice size for a safety, good speed, could well be an answer for those across the middle plays we just can't seem to control. TC mentioning "oustide backer" is interesting.

If he pans out and can cover the TE this pick could trump all other rounds for us. this is my thinking also, this guy Cooper may be our answer to stopping guys like Jason Witten and the other tight ends who seem to run wild all over us.....

We don't draft players to be camp fodder. That may be what they become, but .....

Cooper could turn out to be the impact player in this draft. He's got the physical demensions to be plugged into a couple different spots, Fewell's gotta be excited to see what this kid can do for his schemes.

NFL scouts did try him out at LB drills at the East West Shrine game and at his pro day. Coverage LBs are hard to find, may be easier just to have a hybrid safety.

I hope he's not an injury-prone player either. I looked up all the injuries he had in his college career and I surprised it hasn't slowed him down.

Love this pick, he is the perfect (size speed) guy for that third Safety position. They were thinking that J Will could do it last year but I'm not sure he was the right fit there. This guy is big and can be difficult to throw around!

Taylor might turn out to be another Brad Van Pelt for us, similar size and speed. Sports people said at the time that Van Pelt was too tall and didn't have the build for a LBer and we saw how that went....

Both GM Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin mentioned fifth-round pick Cooper Taylor as a candidate for the Giants' three-safety package in addition to playing special teams as a rookie.
Taylor goes 6-foot-4, 228 with 4.49 wheels. He was viewed as a linebacker prospect by some teams. "He is a safety by trade but you drop him down in that three-safety package or whatever you want to do," said Coughlin. "Whether he plays an outside backer or whatever." Taylor will have to earn the job in camp.

Taylor has had some health issues. He has broken both hands, torn a pectoral muscle while bench pressing, and had major heart surgery. That probably scared off many teams. I imagine he'll probably make the Giants due to his potential on special teams, aside from any future as a safety/OLB.
