Wow--that soon. I guess it's similar to when phillips chose #21. I guess it's one thing I love about the Giants--they have so many star players from the past, so the current day superstars have even bigger shoes to fill. I for one welcome the new legend. Side note: though i'll miss our classic #27's, i welcome our new #27.

It can change when they cut down the roster, but it is a lineman's number

roanoke you're always first to reply to my nonsensical ramblings. just want to let you know that i've appreciated your insight since the giants board revamp about 5 or so years ago. not sure what your old username was.

Other Notables Who Have Worn 72
Doug Riesenberg was drafted in the sixth round by the Giants in 1987. He became a starter at right tackle in 1988, and was a fixture at that spot until 1995. He finished his career by playing one more season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Gordon King was an on-again, off-again starter for the Giants at right tackle from 1978-85. He finished his career by playing two seasons for the New York Jets.
Roman Oben was a Giant for four seasons, 1996-99, and started at left tackle three of those years. After leaving the Giants he played eight more seasons in the league with Cleveland, Tampa Bay and San Diego.
Old-timers might remember **** Yelvington, who played right tackle from 1952-57.

Going from Umenyiora to Pugh. It's going to be hard to tape over that 9-letter last name to a 4-letter one.

Like Jernigan took #12 right after that Steve Smith fiasco, or Randle taking #82 as soon as Manningham left. Only so many numbers. Id be more upset if Moore or Hankins took 92.

92 and moreso 10 have a good chance of being retired numbers in the future.

I will also think of Osi. I loved him, that silly grin and quick wit. Of all my Giants gear, shirts, jackets, hats, sox etc. His is the only one I ever had with a players name on it, wore it every game they played. I will miss him. A fan for over 50 years.

I think the logic is that Pugh wants to contribute to as many rushing yards as Osi did

Because why not?

I mean, I liked Osi and thought he was an excellent player for us, but he's not an historical great Giant.

I couldn't even remember who was #72 previously. Guess that's how forgettable Umenyiora was.

It will be funny when we're playing Atlanta in the playoffs and Pugh puts out a huge pancake block on Osi...

I think of Doug Riesenberg. It's fitting that Justin Puny has the same number as DR, who was another undersized offensive tackle. But Puny is more undersized relative to his peers than Doug was. Let's see if they leave Puny alone against the best defensive ends, kinda like when Parcells stood there like a dummy while Riesenberg got repeatedly mauled by Reggie White, but was too stupid to give him help. Not Riesy's fault - he was undersized going against a superhuman in Reggie.

Justin Puny looks so small that I find it hard to believe he is even a football player. I think the listing of him at 300 lbs is a northward exaggeration. He does have skills, but a guy who looks undersized on a high school offensive line just doesn't leave me jacked up.

I liked when Osi did the airplane move after making a big play. I like Osi a lot and will miss him too. I think we shoulda kept him over Tuck, who may be as used up as Diehl.

Just because he's wearing this number now doesn't mean he'll be wearing it when the season starts

Agreed.. I almost bought a Nicks jersey in the preseason when he was a rookie and I believe he was wearing #18 at the time.. I am glad he switched because I have always been a fan of WR's wearing #'s in the 80's. I have never really been a fan of the low numbers for WR's except in college football for some reason haha.
