When Victor Cruz (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Victor+Cruz) signed his new contract, collected his $9.5 million signing bonus and began his new life as a multi-millionaire, it marked the end of a long and sometimes stressful negotiation. It was also only the beginning for the Giants, because Hakeem Nicks (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Hakeem+Nicks) is now on the clock.

Whatever angst anyone felt over the last eight months or so as the Giants and Cruz’s various people haggled over what turned into a six-year, $45.879 million deal, that’s nothing compared to what lies ahead as Nicks moves to the head of the line. He, not Cruz, is the Giants’ No. 1 receiver, but he has a long history of injuries that complicates his value. He’s going to want an enormous deal — think Mike Wallace and the five-year, $60 million deal he got from Miami — that could be too big of a risk for the salary cap-strapped Giants to take.

That’s a big reason why they couldn’t give Cruz No. 1 receiver money, and why they tried so hard for so long to keep the overall value of Cruz’s deal down.

“The Giants knew that whatever they paid Cruz they were going to have to pay more to Nicks,” one prominent NFL agent said. “His agents were watching this whole thing closely and I’m sure they were drooling over the size of Cruz’s deal.”

Nicks, 25, probably will end up with a contract — from someone — that dwarfs the 26-year-old Cruz’s deal. But his situation isn’t simple. In the last two seasons, Cruz, not Nicks, is the only receiver in the NFL to have more than 80 catches, 1,000 yards and at least nine touchdowns — a feat no Giants receiver had ever accomplished in consecutive years.
Just as importantly, Cruz didn’t miss a game. Nicks, meanwhile, hasn’t played 16 games in any of his four NFL seasons. Last year, injuries to his foot and knee made him mostly a shell of himself even in the 13 games he did play. He finished with an unimpressive 53 catches for 692 yards and three touchdowns, limping the entire way." Read more...

Really don't think it's going to dwarf Cruz's deal at all. It will be slightly higher

I tend to agree, especially if Cruz continues to be the most productive receiver.

Prediction: If Nicks stays healthy and goes over 1000 yards this year, he won't be a Giant next year. If he misses a couple of games and has less than 70 receptions / 800 yards, he'll get less money than Cruz and / or not be a Giant.

I still dont think so. Somehow he is still going to demand to get more than Vic.

If he hits the open market, he is as good as gone.. And if he has a big year, he'd be foolish to sign before he can test the market.

A much greater truism is what I call the greater fool theory. That theory says that there is often times a greater fool willing to pay someone on the basis of emotion not fact. Whether I like it or not, they too make up what we refer to as "the market".

Julio Jones is still on his rookie contract right? I'd say Detroit paying megatron 16mil plus whoever else lines up at receiver for them.

Julio Jones is still under his rookie deal and won't be a FA until 2015. Roddy White, who is now 31 years old, will also be a FA in 2015. So they will most likely not be paying both of these guys top WR money at the same time (unless they voluntarily extend Jones I guess).

Detroit is only paying the QB and one WR top dollar . . . . looking for a team that pays a franchise QB and also pays two WR's top dollar.

I kind of get that feeling. If he has another injury plagued season, the Giants won't pony up (we've seen this with many other players (Smith, Phillips, etc ...)) and if he has an outstanding season, he'll probably ask for more money than the Giants are willing to pay (I don't see the Giants giving Nicks a Mike Wallace contract .... ever).

The only scenario I see Nicks staying is if he does just under 1000 yards, goes injury free except for a slight strain here or there and the Giants sign him to a contract similar to Cruz's. However I don't get the feeling that Nicks will stay with the Giants for less money if he thinks he can get more elsewhere (total subjective opinion of course).

This is very true and since Nicks has already indicated he doesn't know how long he'll play here, it's something Reese is going to use to his advantage.

I think the reason they wanted to get Cruz signed was so that they would have Eli's most productive receiver on board in case they can't sign Nicks.

I don't think Randle even plays into the equation. If Nicks stays healthy they will pay him even if Randle has a good year.

Letting your number one receiver go that was arguably best weapon you had during your SB run and the past 4 years is like leaving your wife of 4 years for a stripper that gave you good lap dances for a year. A poor decision indeed.

Except that the most successful franchises have done just that: the Patriots and the Steelers. You could even say the Giants, but we had to get our #1 receiver to shoot himself :D

I don't think Nicks is going to have that "Monster" season in our system. Defenses will, more often than not, take Nicks away and try to let the rest of the team beat them. Why? Because Nicks is the deep ball guy and Cruz works across the middle. Any team would much rather give up first downs then TDs.
His stats weren't monster in 2011 but our results as a team were. When he was unhealthy look how our offense dropped off.

The Giants aren't the only SB quality team in the league. Plus there's his hometown team of Carolina. Nicks was asked in 2012 if he would one day play for the panthers and he didn't rule it out. Cruz was different as he was undrafted and a restricted free agent.

Is this what you mean by him "indicating" he doesnt know how long he'll be playing here?

"I really can’t speak for my whole career," Nicks said. "I enjoy being a Giant right now. I’m going to take care of what I can take care of as long as I’m a Giant, but I do understand the business side of football, too."

THAT is what Reese is going to use to his advantage?

The answer to your first question is yes. It's actually smart for Nicks to take that position, whether he means it or not.

What Reese will use to his advantage is Rueben Randle's continued development.

Completely subjective. If you pay a lot in one area, you're paying less elsewhere.

However, I don't believe any team to date has managed to keep two #1 receivers (or #1 producing type of receivers) past the second one's contract ... the consensus being that an NFL team couldn't afford to tie up $25MM / year (cap hit wise) on two non-QBs.

What did Cruz do that made him hard to deal with?

Cruz himself didn't do anything. im referring to reports JZs organization was advising him and all that.

I think Nicks is already low-key and prefers to deal in confidence and quickly making it easier on himself.

RoanokeFan

I understand that, but if you are coming off a great year (lets assume that he has a great year), do you really want to risk your career with going elsewhere?

We look at things like "risking you career" by going elsewhere, but players often just want the biggest paycheck they can get no matter who is signing the check. We all want to think our players will just be thrilled to re-sign with the Giants.

Really don't think it's going to dwarf Cruz's deal at all. It will be slightly higher

or no deal at all,,,cruz has outperformed nicks from a health and performance standpoint regardless of where they line up. nicks also has to prove that he can remain healthy and be relied upon for an entire season or at least most of it. Nicks is a good WR but as of now he does not deserve "#1" WR money. My guess is that he looks elsewhere for a team willing to overpay.

I don't know if the Steelers were ever willing to pay Wallace $10M, especially after they signed Brown. In any event, they didn't do it so . . .

Pats are an interesting comparison . . . Hernandez got a $40M deal and Gronk got a $53M deal. However, I think that the combined total of Cruz's deal and the "top dollar" deal that Nicks would command would probably exceed the total of the Gronk and Hernandez contracts.

Also, with Brady's recent extension, his cap hit for 2013 is $13.8M and for 2014 it is $14.8M. Those numbers are significantly less than Eli's cap hit for the next 2 years, which is over $20M per year.

So we still haven't found a team that has committed as much money in cap space to a QB and 2 WR's as we are talking about committing to Eli, Cruz and Nicks.

TCHOF
07-10-2013, 02:21 PM
I said this during the Cruz contract situation: I believe that Cruz will be willing to take a shorter pay, because he is humble and knows he has many opportunities to shine here. I got flamed for it and well what do you know lol. I believe Nicks is in the same situation. I just don't see him risking his career, and leaving a Super Bowl quality team, to a team like the Raiders. I think Nicks knows the Giants situation, and is willing to take a shorter pay to stay here. Will he demand a lot at first? I'd be surprised if he didn't, but I think Nicks and the Giants will be able to work it out.

Cruz didn't take any less money to play here because he loves it here. He is now the highest paid slot WR in the league and he got that deal even when the Giants were in a better negotiating position due to the fact that Cruz was a RFA. He had no other team to go to and he signed the deal because it would have been foolish to play this year for $2.8M and risk injury with a big deal like that on the table.

Similarly, Nicks will sign with the team that offers him the most money. He won't take any less to play here because he likes the team.

it's cute that you think that though . . . .

Buddy333
07-10-2013, 02:36 PM
This is very true and since Nicks has already indicated he doesn't know how long he'll play here, it's something Reese is going to use to his advantage. I think the reason they wanted to get Cruz signed was so that they would have Eli's most productive receiver on board in case they can't sign Nicks. As much as everyone likes the guy, they can't just give everyone what they want. Who knows if Joseph is here next year? Maybe that's why they drafted Hankins.

it's cute that you think that though . . . .He's not even in the top 10 in the most highly paid wideouts. In fact, many around the league feel he was underpaid.

I'm not saying he will take less because he is in love with the Giants, but his situation here can do wonders for his career, he already has a ring and can win plenty more if he sticks around.

And it's very cute indeed.

There is so much we don't know it makes it almost foolish to discuss but that's what fans do. It really doesn't matter what a player "wants." What matters, as we see with Cruz, is what a player will accept. Cruz made a tactical error of sorts by telling his agent not to solicit offers from other teams during the tender open window. But if his goal all along was to stay here, then he wins no matter the details of the contract.

Every player is not going to be that tied to the Giants. Nicks has as indicated he's not. That could be just a strategy but it could also be the truth. If that is the case, as a UFA he's likely to get higher offers elsewhere. Will Reese overpay?

True, but his focus appears misguided. I didn't read anything other than the headline, but I see no purpose whatsoever in contemplating the challenges the front office will face due to the signing of Cruz - especially if the intent is to paint a troubling picture.

It's very obvious that every team must consider the ramifications of every signing and how that impacts their current roster as well as the future of the team.

Admittedly, I was very concerned about the salary cap/roster heading into the off-season, but it's very clear we have a very capable front office. Bottom line is it's way too early to be worrying about Nicks' contract. And Nicks is my favorite current Giant.

I see the Nicks issue in this way. Nicks has been hurt ALOT since he has been here. He could be someone elses diamond in the ruff. The Giants ponied up alot of dough for Cruz which, in the big picture doesn't give the Giants any wiggle room for dealing with Nicks.

our coach needs to start getting the young players involved in the frame of possibilities that Nicks leaves. Who do we have that can step up or who has shown promise to step up and make things happen? We might have to resign ourselves to moving forward without Nicks.

Anyway, Nicks is my favorite current Giant and I'll be upset if he leaves, but I know the Giants will do what is best for the future of the team. So in that aspect, I am not even worried about him possibly leaving because I know they will properly value him and handle his contract situation effectively.

We need to lock up our best players. I dont think it matters at what position. We dont have many elite players on this team and there arent too many in the NFL. Nicks, JPP, Eli (extension) should be priorities over the next year. Thankfully, guys like Rolle, Tuck, Baas, Snee contracts are coming off the books.

Lock up our best players. draft well, and make under the radar FA moves. This is where my thinking is at.
