View Full Version : Vernon Davis

Even though he plays tight end instead of wide receiver, Davis is probably SF's biggest pass threat. Since he's a TE, we'll probably have Boley cover him and put Webster on Crabtree, their top WR. I saw some analyst (unfortunately I forget where so I can't link to it) suggest that the Giants should put Webster on Davis and Ross or Prince on Crabtree. This would then free up Boley to rush Smith, stop the run, or cover a lesser target. It's an interesting idea but I doubt the Giants will do it. What are your thoughts on this?

I think we play our system...we kept Witten and Gonzalez in check, no reason to believe Davis will do any better than them...

i dont believe we have to put our LB on their TE simply bc of the positions they play. Davis is their best option, like you mentioned, so I'd put Ross on him. Ross fairs pretty well against bigger WRs. I wouldnt put Webster on him because I wouldnt like the Ross vs Crabtree match up. Crabtree may drop a few balls but he can prob right right past Ross most of the time.

davis's size would be an issue for webster imo. he'd still cove him but davis could box him out and post him up too easily imho.

id rather bracket coverage with zone rolled towards him. like u said, their wr's arent anything to get worried about so davis should be the focal point of the safeties

We kept Davis to 40 yards the first time, and the vast majority of those came on one play where the coverage was blown.

One thing that no has mentioned is that the Packers recievers couldn't get open against our DBs.

I'd say that Green Bay has a head and shoulders better passing attack than the 49ers..ipso facto; I don't see San Fran moving the ball much sunday unless Frank Gore goes crazy which I think is also doubtful.

Vernon Davis is a beast but I don't think he'll make a difference.

How we cover him will depend on how he lines up. If he's inside, let a LB or safety cover him...if he's on the outside, put a CB on him. Let the system do it's job...

That's true. When Davis lines up at WR they won't have Boley go out there with him. If I recall correctly most of Davis's damage was done after we lost Boley. We probably can play to our system and not make any drastic changes.

It's natural for us to worry about Davis, but Fewell isn't going to be a moron like Williams and continue to blitz even though it's clearly leaving major holes in the D.

I heard on NFL radio Williams was saying before the game "we're gonna pressure the f*ck out of him" in a macho sort of way, like he didn't respect Smith. Luckily for us the Saints allowed the 49ers to put plenty of material on tape for us to see we need to respect them.

You are correct. Boley left in the 2nd qtr which left the Giants with Greg Jones and he effed up coverage on the play where Davis got his TD.

Boley has the speed to run with Davis and the size to deal with him. If there are early issues, a possible adjustment might be to put Rolle on him. This is the likely scenario if Boley was sent on the rush anyway. As we all know Rolle was converted from CB to FS and has shown he can be physical. Isnít he our leading tackler?

Overall, I'm not so worried about Davis, seems to be more hype than substance.

Giants will play their D just like they did the first time we met. A man under and a man over..prob. KP. Boley will do his covering of davis but will also be sent on some Blitz pakages. Forget about sending pressure from the outside..we need pressure from or DTs. There is nothing more scary to a QB then pressure up the middle. Passing lanes get blocked up and a QB cant see the field. If we pressure up the middle...we get a huge advantage. Also I wouldnt be surprised if we play alot of Nickel and dime packages with Rolle and grant playing up alittle. If we keep Davis in check they will not beat us with their other WRs, and Gore will not win the game by himself.

You could make the argument Davis is the best TE in the league. He is definitely worth worrying about.

We did increasingly better against Keller, Witten, Gonzalez, and Finley. I'm confident that we'll keep Davis in check.

I think we're going to keep their entire O in check. Honestly. People talk about their D being too physical for our O? Maybe a valid point. But the 49er O just does not match up well against our D at all. I just don't see it.

I am more worried about their running game than their passing game....but I expect Chase Blackburn to come up big...

You can argue that Blackburn saved or Middle linebacker postion this season. He has played very well for being picked up late in the season.

Defensively, I am more concerned about stopping their running game. If our defense can do so and as a result force Alex Smith to passing 40+ times, I like our odds. It plays into the strengths of this team as opposed to depending on a LB Corps that routinely gets washed out in run support.

I think Cruz, Manningham, and Nicks presents a greater threat of taking it to the house than Davis does on Sunday.

He had a surprisingly good stop against the falcons. He stepped up in the hole and met the RB. Ray Lewis couldn't of done it better on that play.

As a whole, our LBs are not very good in run support, they often get washed out which explains why our FS is our leading tackler. We just don't have the type of LB who is going to go through a blocker and make the play.

Our Linebackers are not phyiscal enough to take on those blockers time and time again. Totally different crew then what I used to see back in the 80's and 90's.

if the Giants D can rattle A Smith without blitzing on the first few 49ers posession this could stop Davis from running his routes effectively since he has to chip or help block..cuz Gore is not really good at picking up blitzes or helping block.....and if the giants led by a 2 possesion game by the half(which i know they can do) the 49ers will more than likely abandon their running game

Double Davis and play first and second down with a 5 man Dline.
