Just saw Paul Dottino reporting from the field. There is a tarp on the field with puddles of water on it as far as the eye can see.

The OL better get some push today!!!!

Thats the whole idea behind tarping the field. Anywho both teams gotta play on it.

the tarp will help for the first qtr but looking at the hourly weather its going to rain all throughout the game.

this will be another mud bowl.

The ball will be wet and easy to knock out for both
sides, but the 9ers been practicing in the rain and probably have a
good idea of how the ball will feel as rain is falling, plus the 9ers is
probably used to the ****ty field, returning punts in the rain won't be
fun or even kick off if we can't see the ball in all that rain, also
defensive players slipping in the rain, not saying it won't effect both
teams but one team has been preparing in the rain while the other
hasn't...

i'm not syaing this because i'm a giants fan but i think it will benefit the giants more as long as they win the TO battle. the giants have played in inclement weather more so than the niner players in years past and this year.

one of the things i've always said, would joe montana had the career he had if he had played in N.E.? its fortunate he ended up with the right team, the right system and the right city.

THIS IS RIGHT FROM THE SF WEATHER BUREAU DETAILED DISCUSSIONS : ( For " various
reasons " [6] Candlestick IS S of the GG Bridge :

So expect periods of light
rain/showers through the daylight hours of today. Then the
precipitation will become more steady and moderate to heavy at times
overnight as the surface low and upper dynamics approach our coastline.
For various reasons on this Sunday afternoon there is lots of
interest in the rainfall forecast but it looks like any significant
rainfall holds off until at least 8 PM for areas south of the
Golden Gate. In addition it looks like the bulk of the heavy rain
and strong winds will occur during the overnight hours...

Thank goodness that the San Francisco wind advisory is from 10pm. The winds are suppose to be 20-30mph winds with gusts to 45-50mph at night. They are talking about winds that toppling trees and powerlines. When Giants play, it is suppose to be around 13mph winds and the Giants can handle that.

Don't be too concerned with rain. It is the wind that slows down pass attack.

The latest local forecast is it will be rainingg before kickoff (it is raining right now and I'm 30 miles from Candlestick) and the rain will get worse as the game progresses. Candlestick is 13 feet above sea level, so drainage isn't great which means it could get slloppy as the game progresses. The turf was replaced and hould be good. From what I understand, the players will be using the bigger/longer cleets. Some players may try to use their regular ones, but if it gets sloppy they will switch. In other words, Candlestick field isn't going to be fast today-it usually isn't anyways but today will be slower. The biggest issue to the offensive side of the ball is that the winds are expected to pick up shortly after kickoff at the latest forecast which could impact kicking and passing game. The brunt of the storm may be occurring during the game. If it's anything like the other night, it will be a tough field.

Contrary to what the earlier poster stated, the Nners did practice some in the rain although not like is expected. With the tarps on, not sure how much the Giants can be on the foeld before the game.

The game should be a slugfest-kind of an old style football game if the winds pick up. Turnovers could make a play in this game.

Wind at Candlestick is what impacts offenses at Candlestick (kicking and passing). They aren't normal winds. The winds at Candlestick swirl and change direction mid play. Impacts kicking game alot.

(01-20) 21:14 PST — Jim Harbaugh might be a miracle worker, but he can’t make it rain on command.

On Friday, the 49ers (http://www.sfgate.com/sports/49ers/) coach was disappointed it didn’t rain during practice in advance of the NFC Championship Game on Sunday against the Giants (http://www.sfgate.com/sports/giants/) at Candlestick Park.

On Thursday, there were only light sprinkles as the Niners practiced. With a 40 percent chance of rain forecast for Sunday, Harbaugh was hoping his team would be able to practice this week in sloppy conditions.

Regardless, Harbaugh expected the field to be in good shape Sunday. A tarp will cover the field until a few hours before kickoff. The turf at Candlestick Park was replaced prior to San Francisco’s game against the Steelers on Dec. 19.

“I expected it to be pretty good,” Harbaugh said. “You don’t know how much it’s going to rain on Sunday. But it’s a good field and it was good last week.”

The 49ers will remain in Santa Clara for their walk-through today.

A rainy game would favor the 49ers IMO. They are a run first team where as we are a pass first team.

A rainy game would favor the 49ers IMO. They are a run first team where as we are a pass first team.

That would favor the passing game as the receivers know where they're going and the defenders have to make more cuts. Don't you think we play in poor conditions at home? Aren't the temps going to be in the 50's? Light wind?

As someone has already pointed out, both teams play on the same surface.
