I dont want people to get all butthurt over this debate. It's not like im saying hockey is an inferior sport by any means. I just kinda thought it was all obvious, and factual: It's not nearly as popular a sport as the rest.
I follow that trend too unfortunately. No particular reason. I liked hockey as a kid. I played until I was 17, but always thought the NHL was 'meh'...I was always much more into football, baseball, and basketball(albeit the 90s specifically). I always try to get into hockey...but to me its just easily forgettable.

If you wanna go even further, you can say that Nascar DESTROYS anything any other sport can try to compete with. The largest spectator sport by far, and it probably has the best ratings too.
I dont even consider nascar a real sport personally lol....there's no ball! there's not even a game! its just driving and making the same turn over and over! lol
we actually had this debate a few years ago and I didn't realize how big Nascar actually was

and your right.... that is if u consider Nascar a sport- which i dont

      The
NBA is on ESPN Wednesdays and Fridays, TNT on Thursdays, and on ABC
every Sunday beginning in January. Oh, and the late stages of the
playoffs and Finals are also nationally televised on ABC. The NHL? They
have that big network contract with ... Versus, which can be found on
channel five-hundred-and-something on your local cable or satellite
      provider. Maybe.

To summarize: More people go to NHL
games than NBA games because basketball has better national television
      deals than hockey does.

20 NHL teams play to 90% capacity, compared to 17 for the NBA.

Another great point that no one thought of...

Because Kase loves hockey. He takes it personally when someone "bashes" his sport. He has played it his whole life and watches it religiously. It's like if someone said Buffy was not one of the most popular shows of all time. You would really take offense to that and would stick up for her ya know?

awful example, i know you were just trying to be funny.
I give hockey players all the credit in the world, because i know how strenuous it is. AND it can be just as bruising as football at any given moment, and at uncontrollable speeds and points of impact.
i dont know WHY it's not as popular, because it should be based on the physicality of the game, so that's weird...but hey, it's fact.
Probably the same reason nobody has given a **** about boxing in almost 20 years.

And then there's the rest I'll call .." the suck list"...... for me baseball tops the list as the most boring game they ever put on a TV screen...a level of boring I can't even explain...baseball is fun to play andthatsit....I'd give a tie to the other two"hockey andb-ball"for their televisedsuckness...

All that being said hockey is great live, as a kid we used to go to a few collage games, loved atmosphere and excitement that the arena brings..I don't get into it on TV at all really...

As for B-Ball I dowatch some ofplayoff games ...but thatsabout it....andI doubt I'd spend a dime to go to a live game....same goes for baseball...

Its Giantsfootball ornothing for me... Watching any other sportsis like I'm forcing myself to do it...My wife watches baseball I find something else to do...

By the way KaseI loved playing hockey as a kid,...all be itunorganized... we would wait for a localpond to freeze over and play.... good times ...I still like to put on theskates from time to time when the ice is right andhave a look about...I go slooooow tho....

You guys just don't get it. Hockey doesn't do well on TV because of the smallness of the puck. HD helps, but not enough. But the game is a great one. Far more fast paced, far more exciting. Plus you can hit people.

Nobody is knocking hockey, Matt or myself. Just simply proving a point that hockey is no where near as popular as basketball nationally. It will always be the 4th most popular sport in the US and could someday go even lower.

If you asked a casual sports fan if he would rather have front row seats or an all access pass to tv games for hockey or B'ball 99% of them are going to go for B'Ball.

                      If you asked a serious Knicks/Rangers, Bulls/Blackhawks or Bruins/Celtics I would bet more than 70% takes B'ball.

No one cares about hockey nationally. If you have a team then of course you are going to care more. I have been to plenty of sports bars in my life. I have never seen hockey on TV nor hear people talking about it. There are bars that would rather show replays of SC than live hockey. No one cares.
Matt said hockey was boring, which was his main reason why hockey isnt popular. Thats a knock. I was at a bar the other night and the ranger game was on.
Its simple - if it was as exciting as some think it is, it would do better.

ANd your in NEW YORK, ANYTHING is on ANYWHERE.

IF anything the fact that Lando has never seen a hockey game on in a sports bar should pretty much prove how nationally nobody cares about hockey...

you step out of hockey towns - ur going to be hard pressed to catch a puck game on TV...
Lando also lives in a city where they have a NBA team and THATS IT!!!!

                      Of course they'd show basketball

WOW, sports bars in Utah suck the ol brasciole. You never hear people talking about it cause Utah has no hockey team, the closest team is in Denver and the Avs blow dong, you even said it, if you have a team you'll care more and in your part of the country there is no team.

There are people that watch all 82 Rangers games at my local bar, hell even I dont watch all 82 Rangers games and they're my #2 after Big Blue, hockey fans are WAAAAY more dedicated than bball fans and there's less of a bandwagon, once a hockey fan always a hockey fan, and if you see a live game you're hooked for LIFE

It isnt always the 4th of the big 4, and its never going below that
Technically i was wrong by saying big 4, its actually 5th out of the big 5 if u want to get techincal. But I don't consider Nascar a sport... I think a ball has to be in pklay to be considered a sport

I've been to about 5 hockey games, so stop it.

you live in NEW YORK. This is what I mean that u have no concept of perception out of the tri-state of big cities.

I personally odn't like hockey, i find it boring. I can get into any sport for small periods of time but its just not an exciting game.

I said that american obviously agrees since they don't have the fan fare. You said they do and tried to give me HOME sales instead of overall sales and just ignore the whole TV thing. Truth is the truth.

And the fake fighting going on is making it go south. And now that Crosby is looking like he may never be what he was suppose to be - theres no doubt that general attendance and TV ratings have been down since he was on top of the game...
OK, dont clown yourself by bringing nascar into it

You live in NEW YORK as well so dont act like you're Captain America

You dont like hockey so obviously you're biased to this discussion just like I am

Truth is truth, hockey has a better following attendance wise, there are more cities in the USA that sellout 100 & 99% of their games in the NHL than the NBA and you seem to ignore that fact

                        Fake fighting???

And other than your opinion there's nothing that says crosby being hurt has hurt the NHL's popularity
Well Im happy you asked, I judged it by the amount of cities that sellout their home games and in the NHL there were 12 teams that sold out 100% of their games and 4 more that sold out 99% of their games, while the NBA had 6 teams that sold out 100% of their home games and 3 teams that sold out 99% of their games

the fact that there were 12 teams that sellout at home and only 1 of those teams sell out on the road says all that you need to know

                            You subtract Canada?
Why subtract Canadia, they have teams in both sports.

But even without Canadia NHL has 11 teams that sellout 99% or better and the NBA has 9 that sellout 99% or better
what happened to your 100% argument? Opening it up to 99% KILLS your argument even more

Because while you have the ADVANTAGE percentage wise, u lose becuase NBA arenas HOLD more people lol. So the 99% means they aren't selling out. So lets get it straight that it means BOTH have more tickets to sell

tthe difference? NBA is sitll selling more tickets even if they are at 99%
FALSE!!!!

Opening up to NBA, to help your argument just proves my point more so

That is another thing he won't accept. Sid is the face of the NHL and it's hurting it with him out. If the Rangers weren't doing so good then we would really never hear about it. Almost every time there was a nationally televised game guess who was playing in it...The Penguins. Sid or Ovechkin every time.

and im sure they were hockey fans before...

i swear its like talking to a wall with u hockey fans. NOBODY IS ARGUING U DONT HAVE A BASE CORE OF FANS

This conversation is about how hockey is perceived nationally. Like ANY sport throughout history, it needs a posterboy. When NHL had one, there was a major jump in national attention and interest... since hes been gone its been on a decline...

And just curious, what teams do these friends of yours like?

That is another thing he won't accept. Sid is the face of the NHL and it's hurting it with him out. If the Rangers weren't doing so good then we would really never hear about it. Almost every time there was a nationally televised game guess who was playing in it...The Penguins. Sid or Ovechkin every time.

HEs actually quietly conceded that argument

he tried yesterday then he looked at the numbers from 08-09 (preinjury) and that was the peak

THE GREAT WINTER GAME had an all time low in ratings this year...

Liking him is irrelevant. If you walked up to people on the road in Louisiana and asked them to name a hockey player they would say him if they even knew one.
Yea by that mindset if you went up to some random person in Montana they couldnt name a basketball player

Rash generalizations dont help your argument
