  • Public Perception Of Tony Romo, Wrapped Up In One Play

    http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2.../?ref=football

Excerpt: "The knock on Tony Romo is that he can’t win in clutch situations, particularly late in the season. The truth is that, before 2012, Romo posted the exact same 97.1 passer rating in December and January as he did in prior months. That included a 2011 season in which he quietly recorded a remarkable 115.9 passer rating in the season’s final month. In 2012, Romo actually continued his late-season success; even including Sunday night’s horrific showing, Romo’s passer rating this past December was 101.2.

None of that matters much in regard to how Romo will continue to be perceived. With everything on the line against the Redskins — a playoff berth and the N.F.C. East crown — Romo laid an egg. I tracked 8 of Romo’s 37 passes as being off-target — about twice his normal rate — and all three of his interceptions were mostly his fault. Despite playing at a near-elite level over much of the second half of the season, Romo will have to suffer through another off-season of torment for failing to perform against the Redskins in a prime-time game in the national spotlight. More specifically, he’s going to have to relive one particular play again and again." Read more...
