Yeah i really don't get the negative stuff with SS. He made the right move with Philly because they told him he would play. Its just what an athlete needs to hear. Plus he got $4MM from them where we were offering a heck of a lot less.
SS did fine for himself and did fine by us.

Eh, maybe. But its not like the giants offer was guaranteed for injury anyway.

Wouldn't he still get the guaranteed portion of the deal even if injured? (Someone earlier in the thread said that the deal offered was 5 years for $35M, with $15M guaranteed)

It was a negotiation. Its always a risk for an NFL player. Just like it is for Cruz. It doesn't make him bad or good. Its just a calculation. If you get seriously injured...your screwed. And he did.
He gambled and lost. He did get $4MM from Philly. Which I can't blame him at all for taking.

Lets all go a little easy on Steve Smith and wish him well.

Totally agree. That's what I've said throughout the thread

No. The guaranteed portion was not fully guaranteed for injury. It was probably in the order of 2 or so mil fully guaranteed for injury or anything else. He probably got about the same or perhaps a little more by going to Philly

                  Link?

So this whole idea that Smith is the poster child for turning down a big deal and then getting injured is nonsense?

So if he was paid up front guaranteed money (not sure what the offered contract called for in that regard) he would have to return it if he was injured?

Garafolo was tweeting it yesterday. But "guaranteed" money in almost all contracts is not actually fully guaranteed

Well from what I understand players get released for three reasons, skill, injury, and salary cap relief.

If a player has guaranteed money protected from any of the three then they call that guaranteed money.

For instance smith could have been guaranteed 5 mil for injury, 5 mil for skill, 5 mil for salary cap.

If he got released due to injury, he only has 5 mil guaranteed, not the supposed 15 mil.

As for paying the money back, he likely would have never received anything more than the signing bonus. And that signing bonus would be unlikely to be demanded back, but he would not have received much additional money.

We don't know the details really of the proposed contract so a lot of this is just speculation, but it's very highly unlikely he was guaranteed 15 mil for injury
