dude, i blew my savings when i left out West by spending 2 weeks in Valdez Alaska, heli-skiing. I spent about seven hours in a helicopter and the first few days were uneasy for me. Valdez has huge burly peaks and we would rip over them in the heli just clearing the summits and ridges by 20-30 feet. The wind rotor coming off the tops of the peaks would push the heli all over. I was more scared of the ship than the places they were dropping us off to ski. By the third day I got used to it , but helicopters are insane.

I have a buddy who is a helicopter maintenance worker. He told me crazy stories about them when I got back and was glad not to have heard them before I went!

He said at the first day of school, they pulled the old- look to the left of you now look to the right, one of you will die in this career if statistics have any say.

I guess the issue with being a mechanic is,most are all heli-pilots as well and many of them need to take the ships up to listen to certain sounds and see how repairs are affecting any other component. Most of his stories were related to flying under those circumstances.

The one story that got me was a buddy of his was working on a fleet of ships and one of the pilots flew the heli through some high elevation, high tension wires and sheared off thetail rotor. The heli went into a violent spin and crashed- 1 death and 3 seriously hurt. Another was of one that came down too hard and crashed while attempting to land. It bounced back up and listed to it's side and snapped of two rotors. The projectiles rhicoched (SP?) off a water tank and one launched into the cockpit, killing the pilot.

The worst story was of one setting ski towers in the French Alps. The ship holds the tower and hovers over the hole, while the ground crew directs it into place. I guess helis can be dangerous when they hover in one place for a very long time, at low altitudes, for reasons I don't know. The heli lost it'sloft and fell with the tower underneath it, into the workers. The rotors snapped off and killed some people on the ground and a few minutes later, the whole thing blew up.

We worked with helicopters a fair bit in the Tetons for air rescues and every year the pilot was always telling us to pay attention to where the ship is and don't take your eyes off it. Sometimes we would need to get the ship into a place where it could not land. They would come in with the litter pack on a rope and drop it to us. We would prep the patient and then one lucky patroller would get to put on a special suit and harness in next to the litter, where the patient was,( this was to moniter the patient while en route and commence CPR if needed. The ship would then come back in and you would clip the litter and yourselfinto the cable and fly awat hanging under the heli. I never got to do it live but did it twice during practice sessions. It was one of the coolest things, except sometimes the rope would spin for a bit and it was a bit dis-orienting. I've always thought helis where really cool but I have a deep respect for them and am def. wary of them.
